When the earth is shaken with its quake.
What does Surah az-Zalzala say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 99:1 When Earth is shaken with her (final) earthquake. This is here because it opens the surah with what happens to the earth, worded "shaken by an earthquake" in Sale, "with her quaking shall quake" in Rodwell, "shall quake with its quaking" in Palmer, "shaken with her (final) earthquake" in Pickthall, whose bracketed word is his own, and "shaken with its quake" in Itani.
- 02 99:2 And Earth yieldeth up her burdens. This is here because it continues with what the earth gives up, called "her burdens" in Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall and "its loads" in Itani, without naming what they are.
- 03 99:3 And man saith: What aileth her. This is here because it gives the question man asks, worded "what aileth her" in Sale, "What aileth her" in Rodwell and Pickthall, "What ails her" in Palmer, and Itani has "What is the matter with it?"
- 04 99:4 That day she will relate her chronicles. This is here because it gives what the earth does on that day, worded "declare her tidings" in Sale, "tell out her tidings" in Rodwell, "tell her tidings" in Palmer, "relate her chronicles" in Pickthall and "tell its tales" in Itani.
- 05 99:5 Because thy Lord inspireth her. This is here because it gives the cause, with the verb worded "will inspire her" in Sale, "shall have inspired her" in Rodwell, "inspires her" in Palmer, "inspireth her" in Pickthall and "will have inspired it" in Itani.
- 06 99:6 That day mankind will issue forth in scattered groups to be shown their deeds. This is here because the renderings name the groups people are in differently, "distinct classes" in Sale, "throngs" in Rodwell, "separate bands" in Palmer, "scattered groups" in Pickthall and "droves" in Itani, and because the renderings differ over whether they "behold their works", in Sale and Rodwell, "show their works", in Palmer, or are "shown their deeds" in Pickthall and "shown their works" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with a different reason there.
- 07 99:7 And whoso doeth good an atom's weight will see it then. This is here because it gives the measure of good that will be seen, worded "the weight of an ant" in Sale, "an atom's weight" in Rodwell, Pickthall and Itani and "the weight of an atom" in Palmer. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, How does the Qur'an hold together God's mercy and His justice? and What does the Qur'an say about the scale that weighs deeds (mizan)?, with different reasons there.
- 08 99:8 And whoso doeth ill an atom's weight will see it then. This is here because it closes the surah with the same measure for "evil" in Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Itani and for "ill" in Pickthall, where Sale again has "the weight of an ant". ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, How does the Qur'an hold together God's mercy and His justice? and What does the Qur'an say about the scale that weighs deeds (mizan)?, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah az-Zalzala opens with what happens to the earth. At 99:1 the renderings word it as "shaken by an earthquake" in Sale, "with her quaking shall quake" in Rodwell, "shall quake with its quaking" in Palmer, "is shaken with her (final) earthquake" in Pickthall, in brackets that mark the word as his own, and "is shaken with its quake" in Itani. At 99:2 the renderings have "cast forth her burdens" in Sale and Rodwell, "bring forth her burdens" in Palmer, "yieldeth up her burdens" in Pickthall and "brings out its loads" in Itani. The verse does not say what the burdens are, and this study does not say either.
At 99:3 a question is put: "a man shall say, what aileth her" in Sale, "man shall say, What aileth her" in Rodwell, "man shall say, What ails her" in Palmer, "What aileth her" in Pickthall, and Itani has "What is the matter with it?" At 99:4 the renderings have "declare her tidings" in Sale, "tell out her tidings" in Rodwell, "tell her tidings" in Palmer, "relate her chronicles" in Pickthall and "tell its tales" in Itani. At 99:4 Sale writes "the earth", where Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall have "she" and Itani "it". At 99:5 the cause is worded "for that thy Lord will inspire her" in Sale, "Because thy Lord shall have inspired her" in Rodwell, "because thy Lord inspires her" in Palmer, "Because thy Lord inspireth her" in Pickthall and "For your Lord will have inspired it" in Itani.
At 99:6 the renderings name the groups people are in differently: "distinct classes" in Sale, "throngs" in Rodwell, "separate bands" in Palmer, "scattered groups" in Pickthall and "droves" in Itani. At 99:6 the purpose is also worded differently: "that they may behold their works" in Sale, "to behold their works" in Rodwell, "to show their works" in Palmer, "to be shown their deeds" in Pickthall and "to be shown their works" in Itani.
At 99:7 the measure of good is worded "of the weight of an ant" in Sale, "an atom's weight of good" in Rodwell and Itani, "the weight of an atom of good" in Palmer and "doeth good an atom's weight" in Pickthall. At 99:7 the renderings word the seeing as "shall behold the same" in Sale, "shall behold it" in Rodwell, "shall see it" in Palmer, "will see it then" in Pickthall and "will see it" in Itani. 99:8 sets out the same measure for "evil" in Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Itani and for "ill" in Pickthall, with Sale again writing "the weight of an ant".
The study What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment? also carries 99:6-8, and the studies How does the Qur'an hold together God's mercy and His justice? and What does the Qur'an say about the scale that weighs deeds (mizan)? carry 99:7-8, each with its own reasons.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not identify the day the surah points to, what the earth casts forth or the man who asks what ails her, and it does not say on what occasion the surah was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 99:1, widening across 8 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 8 passages, each with every cleared translation
8 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 99:1-8, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all eight verses of Surah az-Zalzala, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
