Say, "He is God, the One.
Where does 'Surah al-Ikhlas equals a third of the Qur'an' come from - the text or hadith?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 112:1–4 Say: HE IS GOD, THE ONE; GOD, THE ETERNALLY BESOUGHT OF ALL. HE BEGETTETH NOT NOR WAS BEGOTTEN, AND THERE IS NONE COMPARABLE UNTO HIM. The surah is four lines and must be read whole — and nothing in it says anything about its own value. The study on tawhid carries it too, for a different reason.
- 02 15:87 And We have given thee SEVEN OF THE OFT-REPEATED (VERSES) AND THE GREAT QUR'AN. This verse singles out a portion of the revelation — seven of the oft-repeated verses — without saying which portion it means and without attaching any reward. The study on the virtues of surahs carries it too, for a different reason.
- 03 39:23 God hath (now) revealed the fairest of statements, A SCRIPTURE CONSISTENT, (wherein promises of reward are) paired (with threats of punishment) - Pickthall throughout, with all three of his bracketed markers, which mark words he supplied. This verse describes the Scripture as internally consistent and of a piece, which bears on whether any part of it can be weighed against the whole. The study on peace of heart carries it too, for a different reason.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Ikhlāṣ declares God’s oneness, self-sufficiency, freedom from begetting or being begotten, and incomparability (112:1–4). It is one of the Qur’an’s most concentrated statements of divine unity. The surah itself, however, does not say that reciting it equals one-third of the Qur’an or grants the reward of reading one-third.
That specific equivalence comes from reports, not from a verse. Scholars have explained it in different ways—for example, as referring to the surah’s concentration on knowledge of God, or to reward rather than replacement of the Qur’an—but those explanations belong to the hadith and commentary layer.
The careful answer is therefore: the content of al-Ikhlāṣ is Qur’anic; the ‘one-third’ valuation is transmitted outside the Qur’an. It should not be presented as though the surah makes the claim about itself, nor should it be used to suggest that repeated recitation removes the value of reading, understanding and living by the rest of the Qur’an.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 112:1–4, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

God has sent down the best of narrations: a Scripture consistent and paired. The skins of those who reverence their Lord shiver from it, then their skins and their hearts soften up to the remembrance of God. Such is God's guidance; He guides with it whomever He wills. Allah hath (now) revealed the fairest of statements, a Scripture consistent, (wherein promises of reward are) paired (with threats of punishment), whereat doth creep the flesh of those who fear their Lord, so that their flesh and their hearts soften to Allah's reminder. God has sent down the best of legends, a book uniform and repeating; whereat the skins of those who fear their Lord do creep! then their skins and their hearts soften at the remembrance of God. The best of recitals hath God sent down a book in unison with itself, and teaching by iteration. The very skins of those who fear their Lord do creep at it! Then do their skins and their hearts soften at the remembrance of their Lord! This is God's guidance: by it will He guide whom He pleaseth; and, whom God shall mislead, no guide shall there be for him
God hath revealed a most excellent discourse; a book conformable to itself, and containing repeated admonitions. The skins of those who fear their Lord shrink for fear thereat: Afterwards their skins grow soft, and their hearts also, at the remembrance of their Lord. This is the direction of God: He will direct thereby whom He pleaseth; and whomsoever God shall cause to err, he shall have no director

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Ona je Allahov Pravi put na koji On ukazuje onom kome On hoće. A onog koga Allah ostavi u zabludi niko na Pravi put neće moći uputiti.

Er leitet damit recht, wen Er will.

Have you not considered how God sends down water from the sky, then He makes it flow into underground wells, then He produces with it plants of various colors, then they wither and you see them yellowing, then He turns them into debris? Surely in this is a reminder for those with understanding.
Hast thou not seen how Allah hath sent down water from the sky and hath caused it to penetrate the earth as watersprings, and afterward thereby produceth crops of divers hues; and afterward they wither and thou seest them turn yellow; then He maketh them chaff. Lo! herein verily is a reminder for men of understanding
Hast thou not seen that God sends down from the heaven water, and conducts it into springs in the earth? then He brings forth therewith corn varied in kind, then it dries up, and ye see it grow yellow; then He makes it grit;- verily, in that is a reminder for those endowed with minds
Seest thou not that God sendeth down water from heaven, and guideth it along so as to form springs in the earth - then bringeth forth by it corn of varied sorts - then causeth he it to wither, and thou seest it become yellow - then crumbleth it away? Lo! herein is teaching for men of insight
Dost thou not see that God sendeth down water from heaven, and causeth the same to enter and form sources in the earth; and produceth thereby corn of various sorts? Afterwards He causeth the same to wither; and thou seest it become yellow: Afterwards He maketh it crumble into dust. Verily herein is an instruction to men of understanding

What about someone whose heart God has opened to Islam, so that he follows a light from His Lord? Woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the mention of God. Those are in manifest error.
Is he whose bosom Allah hath expanded for Al-Islam, so that he followeth a light from his Lord, (as he who disbelieveth)? Then woe unto those whose hearts are hardened against remembrance of Allah. Such are in plain error
Is he whose breast God has expanded for Islam, and who is in light from his Lord .... ? And woe to those whose hearts are hardened against a remembrance of God! those are in obvious error
Shall he then whose breast God hath opened to Islam, and who hath light from his Lord . . .? But woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of God! They plainly err
Shall he, therefore, whose breast God hath enlarged to receive the religion of Islam, and who followeth the light from his Lord, be as he whose heart is hardened? But woe unto those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of God! They are in a manifest error

What about someone who covers his face against the terrible misery of the Day of Resurrection? To the evildoers it will be said, "Taste what you used to earn."
Is he then, who will strike his face against the awful doom upon the Day of Resurrection (as he who doeth right)? And it will be said unto the wrong-doers: Taste what ye used to earn
Shall he who must screen himself with his own face from the evil torment on the resurrection day. . . . ? And it shall be said of those who do wrong, taste what ye have earned

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 112:1-4, 15:87, 39:23, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - god + the + eternally + besought; none + comparable + unto + him; begetteth + not + nor + was + begotten; a + third + of + the + qur'an. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Editorial revision. Reviewer: AALAMIN Remaining Studies Editorial Review, Volume 1. Version date: 2026-09-16. Correction history: the plain-words answer above replaces the version signed earlier, and this study's inclusion reasons were rewritten as plain English. One correction previously carried inside a reason is recorded here instead: at 39:23 an earlier signed version left out Pickthall’s (now) and a pair of his brackets, and gave “doom” where he writes “punishment”; all are restored. The Arabic, the translations and the source receipts are unchanged.
