Say, "He is God, the One.
What does the Qur'an teach about God's oneness (tawhid)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 112:1–4 Say: He is God, the One; God, the eternally Besought of all. HE BEGETTETH NOT NOR WAS BEGOTTEN, and there is NONE COMPARABLE unto Him. In as ONE PASSAGE because the four verses are one declaration and the surah exists as a unit - the negations in 112:3-4 are what the affirmation in 112:1 is guarding.
- 02 21:22 IF THERE WERE THEREIN GODS BESIDE GOD, then verily both the heavens and the earth had been DISORDERED. Glorified be God, Lord of the Throne, from all that they ascribe. In because it is the only ARGUMENT for oneness in the set rather than an assertion of it, and the argument is from the order of the world.
- 03 17:111 Praise be to God, Who hath NOT TAKEN UNTO HIMSELF A SON, and Who hath no partner in the Sovereignty, nor hath He any protecting friend through dependence. In because it lists three distinct denials - offspring, co-ruler, and a patron needed out of weakness - which shows what oneness is being defended against.
- 04 2:116 And they say: God hath taken unto Himself a son. BE HE GLORIFIED! Nay, but whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth is His; all are subservient unto Him. In because it answers the claim not by denying the relationship but by pointing out that everything already belongs to Him.
- 05 31:32 And if a wave enshroudeth them like awnings, THEY CRY UNTO GOD, MAKING THEIR FAITH PURE FOR HIM ONLY. But when He bringeth them safe to land, some of them falter. In because it is the one verse that locates oneness in behaviour under terror rather than in doctrine, and because what it describes is temporary.
- 06 35:14 If ye pray unto them THEY HEAR NOT YOUR PRAYER, and if they heard they could not grant it you. On the Day of Resurrection they will disown your partnership. In because it argues against the alternative on practical grounds - the others cannot hear, and could not help if they did.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six passages, and the striking thing is that the Qur'an argues for this rather than merely asserting it.
112 is the compressed statement, and its shape is worth seeing whole. One line of affirmation - He is God, the One - and then three lines of NEGATION: eternally Besought, begetteth not nor was begotten, none comparable. Three quarters of the surah is what God is not. That is the pattern across the set: 17:111 denies a son, a partner in sovereignty, and a protector needed out of weakness; 2:116 denies the son again.
21:22 is the argument. IF THERE WERE GODS THEREIN BESIDE GOD, the heavens and the earth would have been disordered. It reasons from the fact that the world holds together, and it is the only verse here that reasons at all.
35:14 argues on a different footing, and a very practical one: the things you pray to CANNOT HEAR you, and if they could they could not answer.
31:32 is the most human verse in the set and the least doctrinal. Under a wave like an awning, people CRY TO GOD, MAKING THEIR FAITH PURE FOR HIM ONLY - and when they reach dry land, some of them falter. The verse observes that monotheism is what terror produces and that it does not always survive rescue.
What the text does not supply is the vocabulary later built on it. The word tawhid does not appear. Nor do the technical divisions of it familiar from theology. Those are the work of scholars reasoning from these verses, and no work of kalam and no has cleared the rights audit. What shirk - the opposite - consists of is carried by What is the unforgivable sin (shirk) in the Qur'an?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 112:1–4, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Have they taken other gods beside Him? SAY; Bring forth your proofs that they are gods. This is the warning of those who are with me, and the warning of those who were before me: but most of them know not the truth, and turn aside
Have they taken other gods besides Him? Say, produce your proof thereof. This is the admonition of those who are contemporary with me, and the admonition of those who have been before me: But the greater part of them know not the truth, and turn aside from the same

That is because God is the Reality, and what they worship besides Him is falsehood, and because God is the Exalted, the Supreme.
That (is so) because Allah, He is the True, and that which they invoke beside Him is the False, and because Allah, He is the Sublime, the Great
That is because God, He is true, and because what ye call on beside Him is falsehood, and because God, He is the high, the great
This, for that God is the truth; and that whatever ye call upon beside Him is a vain thing; and that God - He is the High, the Great
This is declared concerning the divine knowledge and power, for that God is the true being, and for that whatever ye invoke, besides him, is vanity; and for that God is the high, the great God

O people! Be conscious of your Lord, and dread a Day when no parent can avail his child, nor can a child avail his parent, in anything. The promise of God is true. Therefore, do not let this life deceive you, nor let illusions deceive you regarding God.
O mankind! Keep your duty to your Lord and fear a Day when the parent will not be able to avail the child in aught, nor the child to avail the parent. Lo! Allah's promise is the very truth. Let not the life of the world beguile you, nor let the deceiver beguile you, in regard to Allah

He merges the night into the day, and He merges the day into the night; and He regulates the sun and the moon, each running for a stated term. Such is God, your Lord; His is the sovereignty. As for those you call upon besides Him, they do not possess a speck.
He maketh the night to pass into the day and He maketh the day to pass into the night. He hath subdued the sun and moon to service. Each runneth unto an appointed term. Such is Allah, your Lord; His is the Sovereignty; and those unto whom ye pray instead of Him own not so much as the white spot on a date-stone
He turns the night into day, and He turns the day into night; and He subjects the sun and the moon, each of them runs on to an appointed goal; that is God, your Lord! His is the kingdom; but those ye call on beside Him possess not a straw
He causeth the night to enter in upon the day, and the day to enter in upon the night; and He hath given laws to the sun and to the moon, so that each journeyeth to its appointed goal: This is God your Lord: All power is His: But the gods whom ye call on beside Him have no power over the husk of a date stone
He causeth the night to succeed the day, and He causeth the day to succeed the night; and He obligeth the sun and the moon to perform their services: Each of them runneth an appointed course. This is God, your Lord: His is the kingdom. But the idols which ye invoke besides Him, have not the power even over the skin of a date-stone
35:14 — the verse above

O people! It is you who are the poor, in need of God; while God is the Rich, the Praiseworthy.
O mankind! Ye are the poor in your relation to Allah. And Allah! He is the Absolute, the Owner of Praise
O ye folk! ye are in need of God; but God, He is independent, praiseworthy
O men! ye are but paupers in need of God; but God is the Rich, the Praiseworthy
O men, ye have need of God; but God is self-sufficient, and to be praised

If He wills, He can do away with you, and produce a new creation.
If He will, He can be rid of you and bring (instead of you) some new creation
If He please He will take you off, and will bring a fresh creation
If He please, He could sweep you away, and bring forth a new creation
If he pleaseth, he can take you away, and produce a new creature in your stead
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 112:1-4, 21:22, 17:111, 2:116, 31:32, 35:14, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - begetteth + not + begotten; neither + begetteth + begotten; none + comparable; none + like + unto + him; were + gods + beside + god; taken + unto + himself + son; god + the + eternal + besought. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 7 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:264 - matched incidentally; carried elsewhere on charity; 10:68 - near-identical to 2:116, which is kept; 11:101 - a historical instance; 16:35 - the objectors' fatalism - closer to Does the Qur'an teach predestination or free will?; 18:110 - on-topic but its subject is the Prophet's humanity; 25:2 - near-identical to 17:111; 59:23 - carried by What are the names and attributes of God in the Qur'an?, where the list is the subject.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
