The Most Merciful; on the Throne He settled.
What does the Qur'an mean by God 'istawa' upon the Throne?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 20:5 The Beneficent One, Who is established on the Throne. The shortest and barest instance - no creation clause, no explanation, one sentence. ALSO CARRIED by the study Does the Qur'an describe a physical God seated on a throne? with a different reason; here it is in as the plainest specimen of the verb.
- 02 10:3 Created the heavens and the earth in six Days, then He established Himself upon the Throne, DIRECTING ALL THINGS. This is here because of the clause that follows the verb: what the verse attaches to the Throne is governance, not location.
- 03 13:2 Raised up the heavens without visible supports, then mounted the Throne, and compelled the sun and the moon to be of service. Same shape - the verb sits between an act of creation and an act of ordering.
- 04 25:59 Created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in six Days, then He mounted the Throne. The Beneficent! Ask anyone informed concerning Him. This is here because it ends by referring the question ON to someone who knows, which is itself a comment on the verb.
- 05 32:4 Then He mounted the Throne. Ye have not, beside Him, a protecting friend or mediator. This is here because here the Throne clause is followed immediately by a denial of intermediaries.
- 06 57:4 Then He mounted the Throne... AND HE IS WITH YOU WHERESOEVER YE MAY BE. Carried as the sharpest verse in the set: the same sentence that puts God on the Throne says He is with you wherever you are. Any reading of the verb has to survive its own verse.
- 07 42:11 GUARD VERSE. Naught is as His likeness; and He is the Hearer, the Seer. ALSO CARRIED by the study Does the Qur'an describe a physical God seated on a throne?; here it is in because it is the verse that forbids reading istawa as a body taking a seat, and a study of the verb without it would be a study with its thumb on the scale.
- 08 112:1–4 GUARD VERSE, in as ONE PASSAGE because the surah is four lines and they are one argument: He is One, the eternally Besought, He begetteth not nor was begotten, and there is none comparable unto Him. Carried for the last line.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six times the text says it, in almost the same words: God created, THEN istawa upon the Throne. The renderings give it as established Himself, mounted, is established. This study is about that verb and nothing else.
The study Does the Qur'an describe a physical God seated on a throne? answers the charge. This one asks the narrower question underneath it: what do these six verses actually do?
Read together, three things stand out that are hard to see one verse at a time.
First, the verb almost never stands alone. In 10:3 it is followed by DIRECTING ALL THINGS. In 13:2 by compelling the sun and moon to their courses. In 32:4 by the denial that you have any protector or intercessor besides Him. What the verses attach to the Throne is government - the running of things - rather than a location.
Second, 57:4 puts the two halves in one sentence: then He mounted the Throne... AND HE IS WITH YOU WHERESOEVER YE MAY BE. Whatever the first clause means, the same verse says the second. A reading of istawa that cannot hold both is a reading that has broken its own verse.
Third, 25:59 ends by telling the questioner to ASK SOMEONE INFORMED. The verse closes on a referral rather than an explanation.
Against a literal seating stand two guard verses the frame requires and this study carries. 42:11: naught is as His likeness. And the whole of surah 112: He begets not, was not begotten, and there is none comparable to Him. These are not this study's gloss on the throne verses; they are other verses of the same book, and any reading has to get past them.
What this study will NOT do is adjudicate. There is a long, named, dated argument between schools about exactly this verb - whether to affirm it without asking how, to read it as majesty and dominion, or something else. That argument is real, it is not fringe, and it is precisely the material this platform cannot show you: no and no work of theology has cleared the rights audit. Naming the schools and summarising their positions from memory is the fabrication the whole method exists to prevent.
So: here are the six verses, entire, in four renderings. Here are the two verses that guard them. The tension between them is in the text, it is old, and it is not this study's to settle.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 20:5, widening across 8 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 8 passages, each with every cleared translation
8 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

To Him is your return, altogether. The promise of God is true. He originates creation, and then He repeats it, to reward those who believe and do good deeds with equity. As for those who disbelieve, for them is a drink of boiling water, and agonizing torment, on account of their disbelief.
Unto Him is the return of all of you; it is a promise of Allah in truth. Lo! He produceth creation, then reproduceth it, that He may reward those who believe and do good works with equity; while, as for those who disbelieve, theirs will be a boiling drink and painful doom because they disbelieved
To Him is your return all of you - God's promise in truth; verily, He produces the creature, then He makes it return again, that He may recompense those who believe and do what is right with justice; but those who misbelieve, for them is a drink of boiling water, and grievous woe, for that they did misbelieve
Unto Him shall ye return, all together: the promise of God is sure: He produceth a creature, then causeth it to return again - that he may reward those who believe and do the things that are right, with equity: but as for the infidels! - for them the draught that boileth and an afflictive torment - because they have not believed
Unto Him shall ye all return, according to the certain promise of God: For He produceth a creature, and then causeth it to return again; that He may reward those who believe and do that which is right, with equity. But as for the unbelievers, they shall drink boiling water, and they shall suffer a grievous punishment, for that they have disbelieved

He prescribed for you the same religion He enjoined upon Noah, and what We inspired to you, and what We enjoined upon Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus: "You shall uphold the religion, and be not divided therein." As for the idolaters, what you call them to is outrageous to them. God chooses to Himself whom He wills, and He guides to Himself whoever repents.
He hath ordained for you that religion which He commended unto Noah, and that which We inspire in thee (Muhammad), and that which We commended unto Abraham and Moses and Jesus, saying: Establish the religion, and be not divided therein. Dreadful for the idolaters is that unto which thou callest them. Allah chooseth for Himself whom He will, and guideth unto Himself him who turneth (toward Him)
He has enjoined upon you for religion what He prescribed to Noah and what we inspired thee with, and what we inspired Abraham and Moses and Jesus,- to be steadfast in religion, and not to part into sects therein - a great thing to the idolaters is that which ye call them to! God elects for Himself whom He pleases and guides unto Himself him who turns repentant
To you hath He prescribed the faith which He commanded unto Noah, and which we have revealed to thee, and which we commanded unto Abraham and Moses and Jesus, saying, "Observe this faith, and be not divided into sects therein." Intolerable to those who worship idols jointly with God Is that faith to which thou dost call them. Whom He pleaseth will God choose for it, and whosoever shall turn to Him in penitence will He guide to it
He hath ordained you the religion which He commanded Noah, and which We have revealed unto thee, O Mohammed, and which We commanded Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus: Saying, observe this religion, and be not divided therein. - Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 20:5, 10:3, 13:2, 25:59, 32:4, 57:4, 42:11, 112:1-4, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
