Except for those among the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty, and did not violate any of its terms, nor aided anyone against you. So fulfill the treaty with them to the end of its term. God loves the righteous.
What does the Qur'an say about honouring treaties?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 9:4 Excepting those of the idolaters WITH WHOM YE HAVE A TREATY, AND WHO HAVE SINCE ABATED NOTHING OF YOUR RIGHT NOR HAVE SUPPORTED ANYONE AGAINST YOU - fulfil their treaty to them till their term. Lo, God loveth those who keep their duty. In because it is an exemption carved out of a passage of war, and the test it applies is performance, not belief. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about honesty and keeping your word?, with a different reason there.
- 02 9:7 How can there be a treaty with God and with His messenger for the idolaters SAVE THOSE WITH WHOM YE MADE A TREATY at the Inviolable Place of Worship? SO LONG AS THEY ARE TRUE TO YOU, BE TRUE TO THEM. Lo, God loveth those who keep their duty. In because the reciprocity is stated as a condition running in both directions, and the same closing formula appears.
- 03 9:12 AND IF THEY BREAK THEIR PLEDGES AFTER THEIR TREATY and assail your religion, then fight the heads of disbelief. In because it names what releases the obligation, and the trigger is their breach, not their unbelief.
- 04 8:58 And if thou fearest treachery from any folk, THEN THROW BACK TO THEM THEIR TREATY FAIRLY. Lo, God loveth not the treacherous. In because it forbids the obvious response - secret abandonment - and requires open notice even when treachery is suspected.
- 05 16:91 Fulfil the covenant of God when ye have covenanted, and break not your oaths after the asseveration of them, and after ye have MADE GOD SURETY over you. In because it locates the binding force in the act of swearing. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about expiation for a broken oath?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five verses, and they come from the most hostile passage in the Qur'an - which is what makes them worth reading.
Surah 9 is the text's harshest material on the idolaters of Arabia. And in the middle of it, 9:4 carves out an exemption: those with whom you have a treaty that they have kept - who have abated nothing of your right and supported no one against you - FULFIL THEIR TREATY TO THEM TILL THEIR TERM. The test is entirely behavioural. Nothing is said about their religion changing.
9:7 makes the reciprocity explicit in one clause: SO LONG AS THEY ARE TRUE TO YOU, BE TRUE TO THEM. Both verses close with the same formula: God loves those who keep their duty.
9:12 names what ends the obligation, and it is not disbelief. It is BREAKING THE PLEDGE - and then, in the same verse, attacking the religion.
8:58 is the most demanding verse in the set. If you FEAR TREACHERY from a party, you may not simply stop performing. You must THROW BACK TO THEM THEIR TREATY FAIRLY - openly, on equal terms, so they know where they stand - and the verse ends: God loves not the treacherous. Suspicion does not license a secret exit.
16:91 grounds the whole thing: you made God surety over you when you swore.
A reader who has met surah 9 only through the studies Does the Qur'an tell Muslims to kill unbelievers wherever they find them? and Does the Qur'an call for holy war? should read these five verses from the same surah beside them. The study What does the Qur'an say about justice toward non-Muslims? takes up justice toward non-Muslims.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 9:4, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Excepting those of the idolaters with whom ye (Muslims) have a treaty, and who have since abated nothing of your right nor have supported anyone against you. (As for these), fulfil their treaty to them till their term. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty (unto Him)
Except to those of the idolaters with whom ye have made a league, and who then have not failed you at all, and have not backed up any one against you. Fulfill for them then your covenant until the time agreed upon with them; verily, God loves those who fear
But this concerneth not those Polytheists with whom ye are in league, and who shall have afterwards in no way failed you, nor aided anyone against you. Observe, therefore, engagement with them through the whole time of their treaty: for God loveth those who fear Him
Except such of the idolaters with whom ye shall have entered into a league, and who afterwards shall not fail you in any instance, nor assist any other against you. Wherefore perform the covenant which ye shall have made with them, until their time shall be elapsed; for God loveth those who fear him

Had Allah willed He could have made you (all) one nation, but He sendeth whom He will astray and guideth whom He will, and ye will indeed be asked of what ye used to do
But had God pleased He would have made you one nation; but He leads astray whom He will, and guides whom He will;- but ye shall be questioned as to that which ye have done
Had God pleased, He could have made you one people: but He causeth whom He will to err, and whom He will He guideth: and ye shall assuredly be called to account for your doings
If God had pleased, He would surely have made you one people: But He will lead into error whom He pleaseth, and He will direct whom He pleaseth; and ye shall surely give an account of that which ye have done
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 9:4, 9:7, 9:12, 8:58, 16:91, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - fulfil + their + treaty; treaty + term; fulfil + covenant + idolaters; so + long + as + they + are + true; break + oaths + after + treaty. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
