God does not hold you accountable for your unintended oaths, but He holds you accountable for your binding oaths. The atonement for it is by feeding ten needy people from the average of what you feed your families, or by clothing them, or by freeing a slave. Anyone who lacks the means shall fast for three days. That is the atonement for breaking your oaths when you have sworn them. So keep your oaths. Thus God makes clear His Revelations to you, that you may be grateful.
What does the Qur'an say about expiation for a broken oath?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 5:89 God will not take you to task for that which is UNINTENTIONAL in your oaths, but He will take you to task for the oaths which ye swear in earnest. THE EXPIATION THEREOF IS THE FEEDING OF TEN OF THE NEEDY with the average of that wherewith ye feed your own folk, or the clothing of them, or the liberation of a slave. And for him who findeth not the wherewithal, THREE DAYS' FAST. In because it is the whole ruling in one verse: what is exempt, what is not, three alternative expiations, and a fallback for the poor.
- 02 2:225 God will not take you to task for that which is unintentional in your oaths, BUT HE WILL TAKE YOU TO TASK FOR THAT WHICH YOUR HEARTS HAVE GARNERED. In because it states the same exemption and locates liability in intention rather than in words.
- 03 2:224 AND MAKE NOT GOD, BY YOUR OATHS, A HINDRANCE TO YOUR BEING RIGHTEOUS and observing your duty unto Him and making peace among mankind. In because it is the most surprising verse in the set - it forbids using an oath as a reason not to do good.
- 04 16:91–92 Fulfil the covenant of God when ye have covenanted, and break not your oaths after the asseveration of them... and be not like her who unravelleth the thread, after she hath made it strong, to thin filaments. In as ONE PASSAGE because 16:92's image of a woman unpicking her own spinning is the text's own picture of oath-breaking. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about honesty and keeping your word?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an gives a complete ruling here, which is rare, and 5:89 contains all of it.
First, an exemption: God does not take you to task for what is UNINTENTIONAL in your oaths - the careless by-God of ordinary speech. 2:225 says the same and locates liability in WHAT YOUR HEARTS HAVE GARNERED.
Second, the expiation for a deliberate oath broken, and it is a choice of three: feed ten needy people at the standard you feed your own family, or clothe them, or free one person from bondage. All four translators keep the standard - THE AVERAGE OF THAT WHEREWITH YE FEED YOUR OWN FOLK - which prevents the cheapest possible discharge.
Third, a fallback for someone who cannot afford any of the three: three days of fasting.
2:224 is the verse that changes the character of the whole subject. MAKE NOT GOD, BY YOUR OATHS, A HINDRANCE TO YOUR BEING RIGHTEOUS - or to keeping your duty, or to MAKING PEACE AMONG MANKIND. It anticipates a person who has sworn not to do something good and now feels bound. The verse tells them the oath is not a reason.
Read together, 2:224 and 5:89 say: an oath that stands in the way of doing right should be broken, and here is what it costs to break it.
16:91-92 gives the counterweight - keep what you have sworn - with the image of a woman unravelling thread she has just spun strong. Vows made to God are taken up by the study What does the Qur'an say about vows made to God - and what procedure does it not give? and are not answered here.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 5:89, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

This is the expiation of your oaths when ye have sworn; and keep your oaths. Thus Allah expoundeth unto you His revelations in order that ye may give thanks
God will not catch you up for a casual word in your oaths, but He will catch you up for having what ye make deliberate oaths about; and the expiation thereof is to feed ten poor men with the middling food ye feed your families withal, or to clothe them, or to free a neck; but he who has not the means, then let him fast three days. That is the expiation of your oaths, when ye have sworn to keep your oaths; thus does God explain to you His signs, - haply ye may be grateful
God will not punish you for a mistaken word in your oaths: but he will punish you in regard to an oath taken seriously. Its expiation shall be to feed ten poor persons with such middling food as ye feed your own families with, or to clothe them; or to set free a captive. But he who cannot find means, shall fast three days. This is the expiation of your oaths when ye shall have sworn. Keep then your oaths. Thus God maketh his signs clear to you, that ye may give thanks
God will not take you to task for such of your oaths as are vain, but He will take you to task for breaking the oaths which you take in earnest. The expiation thereof, then, is the feeding of ten poor persons with such average food as you feed your families with, or the clothing of them or the freeing of a slave. But whoso finds not the means shall fast for three days. That is the expiation of your oaths when you have sworn. And keep your oaths. Thus does God explain to you His Signs that you may be grateful

E mantenete i vostri giuramenti. Così Allāh vi mostra i Suoi precetti, perché possiate esserGli grati.

Satan seeketh only to cast among you enmity and hatred by means of strong drink and games of chance, and to turn you from remembrance of Allah and from (His) worship. Will ye then have done
Satan only desires to place enmity and hatred between you by wine and maisar, and to turn you from the remembrance of God and from prayer; but will ye not desist
Only would Satan sow hatred and strife among you, by wine and games of chance, and turn you aside from the remembrance of God, and from prayer: will ye not, therefore, abstain from them
Satan seeks only to create enmity and hatred among you by means of wine and the game of chance, and to keep you back from the remembrance of God and from Prayer. Then will you keep back

16:91 И будьте верны завету Аллаха, когда вы заключили [его], и не нарушайте клятв после их скрепления, ведь вы сделали Аллаха своим поручителем. Воистину, Аллах знает то, что вы совершаете.
16:92 И не будьте подобны той, которая распустила свою пряжу на отдельные нити после того, как крепко спряла её: вы делаете свои клятвы средством обмана между собой из-за того, что одна община многочисленнее другой. God commands justice, and goodness, and generosity towards relatives. And He forbids immorality, and injustice, and oppression. He advises you, so that you may take heed.
Lo! Allah enjoineth justice and kindness, and giving to kinsfolk, and forbiddeth lewdness and abomination and wickedness. He exhorteth you in order that ye may take heed

But had God pleased He would have made you one nation; but He leads astray whom He will, and guides whom He will;- but ye shall be questioned as to that which ye have done
Had God pleased, He could have made you one people: but He causeth whom He will to err, and whom He will He guideth: and ye shall assuredly be called to account for your doings
If God had pleased, He would surely have made you one people: But He will lead into error whom He pleaseth, and He will direct whom He pleaseth; and ye shall surely give an account of that which ye have done

The translators word this verse differently
And do not use your oaths to deceive one another, so that a foot may not slip after being firm, and you taste misery because you hindered from God's path, and incur a terrible torment.
Make not your oaths a deceit between you, lest a foot should slip after being firmly planted and ye should taste evil forasmuch as ye debarred (men) from the way of Allah, and yours should be an awful doom
Take not therefore your oaths for mutual intrigue, lest a foot slip after being planted firmly, and ye taste of evil for that ye turned folks off the path of God, and for you there be mighty woe
Therefore take not your oaths with mutual fraud, lest your foot slip after it hath been firmly fixed, and ye taste of evil because ye have turned others aside from the way of God, and great be your punishment
Therefore take not your oaths between you deceitfully, lest your foot slip, after it hath been stedfastly fixed, and ye taste evil in this life, for that ye have turned aside from the way of God; and ye suffer a grievous punishment in the life to come
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 5:89, 2:225, 2:224, 16:91-92, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - expiation + thereof + is + the + feeding; unintentional + in + your + oaths; keep + your + oaths; god + will + not + take + you + to + task + for + that + which + is + unintentional. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
