Go to Pharaoh. He has tyrannized.
What does the Qur'an say about speaking truth to an unjust ruler?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 20:43–44 GO, BOTH OF YOU, UNTO PHARAOH. Lo, he hath transgressed the bounds. AND SPEAK UNTO HIM A GENTLE WORD, that peradventure he may heed or fear. In as ONE PASSAGE because 20:44 is the instruction this study exists for, and it is the opposite of what the situation would suggest - the most notorious tyrant in the book is to be addressed gently.
- 02 20:45–46 They said: OUR LORD, LO, WE FEAR THAT HE MAY BE BEFOREHAND WITH US OR THAT HE MAY PLAY THE TYRANT. He said: FEAR NOT. LO, I AM WITH YOU TWAIN, HEARING AND SEEING. In as ONE PASSAGE because the fear is recorded rather than suppressed, and the answer given is presence rather than a guarantee of safety.
- 03 79:17–19 Go thou unto Pharaoh - lo, he hath rebelled - and say unto him: HAST THOU THE WILL TO GROW IN PURITY, and that I guide thee to thy Lord so that thou mayst fear Him? In as ONE PASSAGE because the words prescribed are a question about the tyrant's own good, not an accusation.
- 04 26:16–17 And come together unto Pharaoh and say: we bear a message of the Lord of the Worlds, saying: LET THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL GO WITH US. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the demand itself, and it is a specific political demand rather than a general call.
- 05 40:28 And a believing man of Pharaoh's family, WHO HID HIS FAITH, said: would ye kill a man because he saith: my Lord is God, and hath brought you clear proofs from your Lord? In because it is the one place a member of the court speaks up, and the text records that he had concealed his belief until then.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an's answer to this question is concentrated in one episode and is not what a reader expects.
Moses and Aaron are sent to Pharaoh - described in the same breath as having TRANSGRESSED THE BOUNDS - and the instruction they are given is 20:44: SPEAK UNTO HIM A GENTLE WORD, THAT PERADVENTURE HE MAY HEED OR FEAR. The most severe tyrant in the book is to be addressed mildly, and the reason offered is that it might work.
79:19 prescribes actual words, and they are a question about Pharaoh's own benefit: HAST THOU THE WILL TO GROW IN PURITY, and that I guide thee to thy Lord? Not an indictment. An offer.
That is paired with a demand which is entirely concrete. 26:17: LET THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL GO WITH US. The gentleness is in the manner; the content is a political ultimatum about the freedom of an enslaved people.
20:45-46 is the human part and the text does not tidy it away. The two of them say: WE FEAR HE WILL BE BEFOREHAND WITH US, OR PLAY THE TYRANT. The fear is reasonable and it is recorded. The answer is not that they will be safe. It is I AM WITH YOU, HEARING AND SEEING.
40:28 shows the other kind of case - not a prophet sent from outside, but a man inside the court WHO HAD HIDDEN HIS FAITH and who speaks when a killing is proposed. The text notes the concealment without condemning it, and then records the speech.
Together: go, be specific about the injustice, speak gently, expect fear, and know that someone inside may break silence too. The wider material on the oppressed is carried by What does the Qur'an say about standing up for the oppressed? and on the tyrant by What does the Qur'an say about tyranny - Pharaoh as the archetype?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 20:43–44, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

(Pharaoh) said (unto Moses): Did we not rear thee among us as a child? And thou didst dwell many years of thy life among us
And he said, 'Did we not bring thee up amongst us as a child? and thou didst dwell amongst us for years of thy life
He said, "Did we not rear thee among us when a child? And hast thou not passed years of thy life among us

The translators word this verse differently
And you committed that deed you committed, and you were ungrateful."
And thou didst that thy deed which thou didst, and thou wast one of the ingrates
and thou didst do thy deed which thou hast done, and thou art of the ungrateful
And yet what a deed is that which thou hast done! Thou art one of the ungrateful
Yet hast thou done thy deed which thou hast done: And thou art an ungrateful person

A believing man from Pharaoh's family, who had concealed his faith, said, "Are you going to kill a man for saying, `My Lord is God,' and he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? If he is a liar, his lying will rebound upon him; but if he is truthful, then some of what he promises you will befall you. God does not guide the extravagant imposter.

And a believing man of Pharaoh's family, who hid his faith, said: Would ye kill a man because he saith: My Lord is Allah, and hath brought you clear proofs from your Lord? If he is lying, then his lie is upon him; and if he is truthful, then some of that wherewith he threateneth you will strike you. Lo! Allah guideth not one who is a prodigal, a liar
And a believing man of Pharaoh's people, who concealed his faith, said, 'Will ye kill a man for saying, My Lord is God, when he has come to you with manifest signs from your Lord? and if he be a liar, against him is his lie; and if he be truthful, there will befall you somewhat of that which he threatens you; verily, God guides not him who is an extravagant liar
And a man of the family of Pharaoh, who was a BELIEVER, but hid his faith, said, "Will ye slay a man because he saith my Lord is God, when he hath already come to you with proofs of his mission from your Lord? and if he be a liar, on him will be his lie: but if he be a man of truth, part at least of what he threateneth will fall upon you. Truly God guideth not him who is a transgressor, a liar
And a man who was a true believer, of the family of Pharaoh, and concealed in his faith, said, will ye put a man to death, because he saith, God is my Lord; seeing he is come unto you with evident signs from your Lord? If he be a liar, on him will the punishment of his falsehood light; but if he speaketh the truth, some of those judgments with which he threateneth you, will fall upon you: Verily God directeth not him who is a transgressor, or a liar

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 20:43-44, 20:45-46, 79:17-19, 26:16-17, 40:28, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - speak + gently + unto + him; gentle + word; go + unto + pharaoh; fear + not + i + am + with + you; best + jihad + word. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 5:3 - matched incidentally; 20:24 - near-identical to 20:43, which is kept with its instruction.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
