Pharaoh exalted himself in the land, and divided its people into factions. He persecuted a group of them, slaughtering their sons, while sparing their daughters. He was truly a corrupter.
What does the Qur'an say about tyranny - Pharaoh as the archetype?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 28:4 Lo, Pharaoh EXALTED HIMSELF IN THE EARTH AND MADE ITS PEOPLE CASTES. A tribe among them he oppressed, killing their sons and sparing their women. Lo, he was of those who work corruption. In because it is the fullest anatomy of the tyranny: self-elevation, division of the population, and selective killing. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about corruption in the land (fasad)? and What does the Qur'an say about standing up for the oppressed?, each with its own reason.
- 02 79:23–24 Then gathered he and summoned, and proclaimed: I AM YOUR LORD THE HIGHEST. In as ONE PASSAGE because the claim is the culmination and 79:23 shows it made publicly, to an assembly.
- 03 28:38 And Pharaoh said: O chiefs, I KNOW NOT THAT YE HAVE A GOD OTHER THAN ME. So kindle for me a fire, O Haman, to bake the mud, and set up for me a lofty tower in order that I may survey the God of Moses. In because the divine claim is joined to a building project, which is the text's picture of a tyrant's method - assertion plus spectacle.
- 04 40:29 O my people, yours is the kingdom today, ye being uppermost in the land. But who would save us from the wrath of God should it reach us? PHARAOH SAID: I DO BUT SHOW YOU WHAT I THINK, AND I DO BUT GUIDE YOU TO WISE POLICY. In because it is the tyrant defending himself in the language of prudence and good governance, which is the most modern-sounding sentence in the set.
- 05 43:51–54 And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made: O my people, is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me?... Thus he persuaded his people to make light of him, AND THEY OBEYED HIM. Lo, they were a wanton folk. In as ONE PASSAGE because 43:54 names the other half of tyranny - the people who complied - and the verdict falls on them too.
- 06 10:90–91 And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh with his hosts pursued them in rebellion and transgression, till, when the fate of drowning overtook him, he exclaimed: I BELIEVE THAT THERE IS NO GOD SAVE HIM in whom the Children of Israel believe. WHAT! NOW! WHEN HITHERTO THOU HAST REBELLED. In as ONE PASSAGE because the deathbed conversion and its refusal are one exchange.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Pharaoh is the Qur'an's worked example of tyranny, and the anatomy it gives is unusually political.
28:4 lists three components and none of them is personal vice. He EXALTED HIMSELF IN THE EARTH. He MADE ITS PEOPLE CASTES - divided the population into ranked groups. And he oppressed one of those groups by killing their sons. Self-elevation, stratification, selective violence.
The divine claim, when it comes, is public and theatrical. 79:23-24: he GATHERED AND SUMMONED, and proclaimed I AM YOUR LORD THE HIGHEST. 28:38 pairs it with a construction project - build me a tower so I may look at the God of Moses. Assertion plus spectacle.
40:29 is the sentence a modern reader should sit with. Challenged, Pharaoh does not rage. He says: I DO BUT SHOW YOU WHAT I THINK, AND I DO BUT GUIDE YOU TO WISE POLICY. The tyrant speaks the language of reasonable administration.
43:51-54 names the part of tyranny that is not the tyrant's. He makes his proclamation about the rivers and the kingdom, and then: THUS HE PERSUADED HIS PEOPLE TO MAKE LIGHT OF HIM, AND THEY OBEYED HIM. LO, THEY WERE A WANTON FOLK. The verdict extends to those who went along.
10:90-91 closes it. Drowning, he professes belief - and is told: WHAT! NOW! WHEN HITHERTO THOU HAST REBELLED. It is the same principle as 4:18, carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about a good end (husn al-khatima)? and What does the Qur'an say about the moment the soul is taken - and what detail does it not give?: a submission produced at the last moment is not accepted.
Speaking to such a ruler is carried by What does the Qur'an say about speaking truth to an unjust ruler?, and what is owed to his victims by What does the Qur'an say about standing up for the oppressed?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 28:4, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Lo! Pharaoh exalted himself in the earth and made its people castes. A tribe among them he oppressed, killing their sons and sparing their women. Lo! he was of those who work corruption
Verily, Pharaoh was lofty in the land and made the people thereof sects; one party of them he weakened, slaughtering their sons and letting their women live. Verily, he was of the despoilers
Now Pharaoh lifted himself up in the earth, and divided his people into parties: one portion of them he brought low - He slew their male children, and let their females only live; for he was one of those who wrought disorders

And Pharaoh said: O chiefs! I know not that ye have a god other than me, so kindle for me (a fire), O Haman, to bake the mud; and set up for me a lofty tower in order that I may survey the god of Moses; and lo! I deem him of the liars
And Pharaoh said, 'O ye chiefs! I do not know any god for you except me; then set fire, O Haman! to some clay and make for me a tower, haply I may mount up to the God of Moses; for, verity, I think he is of those who lie

Faraoni tha: "Oj pari!
Fir'awna wi'i: "eey mon dental, mi anndanaa on deweteeɗo, si wonaa min. Eey ma yo Haamaana, huɓɓinanam [yiite] e loopal ngal, mahiranaa kam huɓeere toownde, no gasa ka mi ƴellitoo e Deweteeɗo Muusaa On; tawde miɗo sikki mo e fenooɓe ɓen".
Fir’awna nijedhe “isin yaa qondaaltota! Ana malee gabbaramaa biraa isiniif hin beeku,Yaa Haamaan! Dhoqqee irratti ibidda naaf bobeessii (xuubii tolchi) gamoo dheeraa naaf godhi; gara Rabbii Muusaa olbahuun koo ni kajeelama. ani kijibdoota irraa ta’uun isa yaada” jedhe.

If he is lying, then his lie is upon him; and if he is truthful, then some of that wherewith he threateneth you will strike you. Lo! Allah guideth not one who is a prodigal, a liar
And a believing man of Pharaoh's people, who concealed his faith, said, 'Will ye kill a man for saying, My Lord is God, when he has come to you with manifest signs from your Lord? and if he be a liar, against him is his lie; and if he be truthful, there will befall you somewhat of that which he threatens you; verily, God guides not him who is an extravagant liar
And a man of the family of Pharaoh, who was a BELIEVER, but hid his faith, said, "Will ye slay a man because he saith my Lord is God, when he hath already come to you with proofs of his mission from your Lord? and if he be a liar, on him will be his lie: but if he be a man of truth, part at least of what he threateneth will fall upon you. Truly God guideth not him who is a transgressor, a liar
And a man who was a true believer, of the family of Pharaoh, and concealed in his faith, said, will ye put a man to death, because he saith, God is my Lord; seeing he is come unto you with evident signs from your Lord? If he be a liar, on him will the punishment of his falsehood light; but if he speaketh the truth, some of those judgments with which he threateneth you, will fall upon you: Verily God directeth not him who is a transgressor, or a liar

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 28:4, 79:23-24, 28:38, 40:29, 43:51-54, 10:90-91, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - pharaoh + exalted + himself; pharaoh + tyrant; i + am + your + lord + the + highest; divided + people + castes; pharaoh + transgressed. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
