You did not read any scripture before this, nor did you write it down with your right hand; otherwise the falsifiers would have doubted.
What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet being unlettered?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 29:48 AND THOU WAST NOT A READER OF ANY SCRIPTURE BEFORE IT, NOR DIDST THOU WRITE IT WITH THY RIGHT HAND, for then might those have doubted who follow falsehood. In because it is the clearest statement, it denies both reading and writing, and it gives the reason - that the claim would otherwise be open to a specific doubt.
- 02 7:157–158 Those who follow the messenger, THE PROPHET WHO CAN NEITHER READ NOR WRITE, whom they will find described in the Torah and the Gospel... So believe in God and His messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, who believeth in God and in His words. In as ONE PASSAGE because the description is repeated in consecutive verses, which makes it a title rather than a remark. ALSO CARRIED by Does the Qur'an say the Prophet was foretold by earlier prophets? and What does the Qur'an say about the pen and the honour of writing?, with different reasons there.
- 03 2:78 AMONG THEM ARE UNLETTERED FOLK WHO KNOW THE SCRIPTURE NOT EXCEPT FROM HEARSAY. They but guess. In because the same word is used of a group of ordinary people, which is the evidence that it may describe a category rather than an individual's literacy - and a reader deserves to see it.
- 04 25:4–5 Those who disbelieve say: this is naught but a lie that he hath invented, and other folk have helped him with it... And they say: FABLES OF THE MEN OF OLD WHICH HE HATH HAD WRITTEN DOWN so that they are dictated to him morn and evening. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the accusation 29:48 is answering. ALSO CARRIED by the study Did the Qur'an simply borrow its stories from the Bible?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Two verses state it, one gives the reason, and a fourth quietly complicates the word.
29:48 is the plainest: THOU WAST NOT A READER OF ANY SCRIPTURE BEFORE IT, NOR DIDST THOU WRITE IT WITH THY RIGHT HAND. Both capacities are denied. And the verse gives the purpose - FOR THEN MIGHT THOSE HAVE DOUBTED WHO FOLLOW FALSEHOOD. The point of the fact, on the text's own account, is evidential: it forecloses a particular accusation.
The accusation is preserved at 25:5 - fables of the men of old WHICH HE HATH HAD WRITTEN DOWN, dictated to him morning and evening. 29:48 answers a charge the book itself records.
7:157-158 uses the description twice in consecutive verses, which turns it into something like a title. All four translators render it as one who can neither read nor write.
Now the complication, and this study carries it rather than hiding it. 2:78 uses the SAME Arabic word of a group of people: AMONG THEM ARE UNLETTERED FOLK WHO KNOW THE SCRIPTURE ONLY FROM HEARSAY. There the word describes a category - people without the scripture, as against those who have it - rather than making a claim about individual literacy. Whether the word means illiterate or scriptureless is a genuine lexical question, and it is the hinge of a real argument.
This study cannot settle it. The morphology layer reaches these verses but records a real root for well under half their tokens, and no lexicon and no has cleared the rights audit. What can be shown is that the text uses one word in two settings, and that 29:48 denies reading and writing in so many words.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 29:48, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Thou couldst not recite before this any book, nor write it with thy right hand, for in that case those who deem it vain would have doubted
Thou didst not recite any book (of revelation) before it: with that right hand of thine thou didst not transcribe one: else might they who treat it as a vain thing have justly doubted
Thou couldest not read any book before this; neither couldest thou write it with thy right hand: Then had the gainsayers justly doubted of the divine original thereof

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

We divided them into twelve tribal communities. And We inspired Moses, when his people asked him for something to drink: "Strike the rock with your staff." Whereupon twelve springs gushed from it. Each group recognized its drinking-place. And We shaded them with clouds, and We sent down upon them manna and quails: "Eat of the good things We have provided for you." They did not wrong Us, but they used to wrong their own selves.
We divided them into twelve tribes, nations; and We inspired Moses, when his people asked him for water, saying: Smite with thy staff the rock! And there gushed forth therefrom twelve springs, so that each tribe knew their drinking-place. And we caused the white cloud to overshadow them and sent down for them the manna and the quails (saying): Eat of the good things wherewith we have provided you. They wronged Us not, but they were wont to wrong themselves
And we cut them up into twelve tribes, each a nation; and we revealed unto Moses, when his people asked him for drink, 'Strike with thy staff the rock!' and there gushed forth from it twelve springs, each folk knew their drinking place. And we overshadowed them with the cloud; and sent down upon them the manna and the quails, 'Eat of the good things we have provided you with!' - Yet they did not wrong us, but it was themselves they wronged
And we divided the Israelites into twelve tribes, as nations; and we revealed unto Moses when the people asked drink of him - "Strike the rock with thy staff:" and there gushed forth from it twelve fountains - the men all knew their drinking places. And we caused clouds to overshadow them, and sent down upon them the manna and the quails. . . . "Eat of the good things with which we have supplied you." But it was not us whom they injured, but they injured their own selves
And We divided them into twelve tribes, distinct peoples. And, We revealed to Moses, when his people asked him for water, saying, 'Strick the rock with thy rod;' and from it there gushed forth twelve springs; every tribe knew their drinking place. And We caused the clouds to overshadow them and We sent down for them Manna and Salwa and We said, 'Eat of the good things We have provided for you.' 25:5 i govore: “To su izmišljotine naroda drevnih, on traži da mu se prepisuju i ujutro i navečer da mu ih čitaju.”

25:5 5. Ir jie sako: „Senovės pasakos, kurias jis užrašė ir jos diktuojamos jam rytą ir popietę.“
25:4 Warri kafaran nijedhan “kun soba inni (Muhammad) of irraa uumeefi namoonni biraa irratti isa gargaaran malee waan biraatii miti”. Dhugumatti isaan miidhaafi cubbuu rawwatanii jiru.
25:5 “(Kun) hogbarruu warra durii ishee barreessisee isheen ganamaafi galgala isa irratti dubbifamtuudha” jedhan.

And yet, instead of Him, they produce for themselves gods that create nothing, but are themselves created; that have no power to harm or benefit themselves; and no power over life, death, or resurrection.
Yet they choose beside Him other gods who create naught but are themselves created, and possess not hurt nor profit for themselves, and possess not death nor life, nor power to raise the dead
And they take beside Him gods who create not aught, but are themselves created, and cannot control for themselves harm or profit, and cannot control death, or life, or resurrection
Yet have they adopted gods beside Him which have created nothing, but were themselves created: And no power have they over themselves for evil or for good, nor have they power of death, or of life, or of raising the dead
Yet have they taken other gods besides Him; which have created nothing, but are themselves created: And are able neither to avert evil from, nor to procure good unto themselves; and have not the power of death, or of life, or of raising the dead

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 29:48, 7:157-158, 2:78, 25:4-5, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - unlettered; illiterate; not + a + reader + of + any + scripture; nor + didst + thou + write + it + with + thy + right + hand. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
