And whoever commits a mistake, or a sin, and then blames it on an innocent person, has taken a slander and a clear sin.
What does the Qur'an say about backbiting and slander?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:112 Whoever commits a fault or a crime and then throws the blame on an innocent person has burdened himself with falsehood. In because it names the mechanism of slander - transferring guilt to someone who did not earn it - rather than only the word.
- 02 24:16 Why did ye not say: it is not for us to speak of this? This is an awful calumny. In because it is the one place the text supplies the answer a hearer should give, and because it treats repeating the charge as itself the offence.
- 03 33:58 Those who malign believing men and believing women UNDESERVEDLY bear the guilt of slander. In because the qualifier is the whole of it: the wrong named is the undeserved charge, not criticism as such.
- 04 49:11 Let not a folk deride a folk, nor women other women; neither defame one another nor insult one another with nicknames. In because it is the direct prohibition, and because it names the forms - derision, defamation, nicknames. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about mocking others?, with a different reason there.
- 05 49:12 Shun much suspicion; spy not, neither backbite one another - would one of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? In because it is the central verse on backbiting and because it supplies the text's own image for it. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about suspicion and spying?, with a different reason there.
- 06 68:11 Detractor, spreader abroad of slanders. In because it puts slander in a list of characteristics, as a description of a person rather than of an act.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six verses, and they do not all say the same thing.
49:12 is the one most people can quote: shun much suspicion, spy not, neither backbite one another - would one of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? The image is the argument. It is not that backbiting is unkind; it is that it is a thing you would find revolting if you saw it plainly.
33:58 carries a qualifier that matters and is easy to lose: those who malign believing men and women UNDESERVEDLY. The wrong named there is the undeserved charge. The verse does not, on its own words, forbid saying something true and deserved, and the study does not stretch it to.
4:112 describes a different act with the same tongue - throwing your own fault onto someone innocent - and 68:11 lists the slanderer as a type of person rather than the slander as a type of act.
24:16 is the only one that tells a hearer what to do: why did you not say, it is not for us to speak of this? The offence there is repeating it.
What these verses do NOT settle is where honest report, warning and testimony end and backbiting begins. 49:12 says shun MUCH suspicion and says some suspicion is a crime, which concedes that not all of it is. Sorting that is the work of the interpretation layer, and no has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:112, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

If two groups of believers fight each other, reconcile between them. But if one group aggresses against the other, fight the aggressing group until it complies with God's command. Once it has complied, reconcile between them with justice, and be equitable. God loves the equitable.
And if two parties of believers fall to fighting, then make peace between them. And if one party of them doeth wrong to the other, fight ye that which doeth wrong till it return unto the ordinance of Allah; then, if it return, make peace between them justly, and act equitably. Lo! Allah loveth the equitable
And if the two parties of the believers quarrel, then make peace between them; and if one of the twain outrages the other, then fight the party that has committed the outrage until it return to God's bidding; and if it do return then make peace between them with equity, and be just; verily, God loves the just
If two bodies of the faithful are at war, then make ye peace between them: and if the one of them wrong the other, fight against that party which doth the wrong, until they come back to the precepts of God: if they come back, make peace between them with fairness, and act impartially; God loveth those who act with impartiality
If two parties of the believers contend with one another, do ye endavour to compose the matter between them: And if the one of them offer an insult unto the other, fight against that party which offered the insult, until they return unto the judgment of God; and if they do return, make peace between them with equity: And act with justice; for God loveth those who act justly

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. И не выслеживайте друг друга, и не злословьте за спиной друг друга. Неужели кто-либо из вас пожелал бы есть мясо своего умершего брата? Вы бы почувствовали отвращение к этому! The Desert-Arabs say, "We have believed." Say, "You have not believed; but say, 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered into your hearts. But if you obey God and His Messenger, He will not diminish any of your deeds. God is Forgiving and Merciful."
The wandering Arabs say: We believe. Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Ye believe not, but rather say "We submit," for the faith hath not yet entered into your hearts. Yet, if ye obey Allah and His messenger, He will not withhold from you aught of (the reward of) your deeds. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful
The desert Arabs say, 'We believe.' Say, 'Ye do not believe; but say, "We have become Muslims;" for the faith has not entered into your hearts: but if ye obey God and His Apostle He will not defraud you of your works at all: verily, God is forgiving, compassionate
The Arabs of the desert say, "We believe." Say thou: Ye believe not; but rather say, "We profess Islam;" for the faith hath not yet found its way into your hearts. But if ye obey God and His Apostle, he will not allow you to lose any of your actions: for God is Indulgent, Merciful
The Arabs of the desert say, we believe. Answer, ye do by no means believe; but say, we have embraced Islam: For the faith hath not yet entered into your hearts. If ye obey God and his apostle, He will not defraud you of any part of the merit of your works: For God is inclined to forgive, and merciful

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:112, 24:16, 33:58, 49:11, 49:12, 68:11, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - backbite; backbiting; backbiteth; slander; slanderer; traduce; defame; calumny; evil + speaking. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 4:148; 4:156; 9:79. The reason for each was not recorded.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
