The Fig · 8 verses · Meccan

In plain wordsEditorial

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It carries the AALAMIN Editor signature and the date it was signed, because someone has to answer for it.

Eight verses and thirty-four words: the fig and the olive, Mount Sinai and this secure city, sworn by before the statement that man was created in the best of moulds and then returned to the lowest of the low — with an exception for those who believe and do righteous deeds.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Surah 97

Al-Qadrالقدر

The Power, Fate · 5 verses · Meccan

In plain wordsEditorial

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It carries the AALAMIN Editor signature and the date it was signed, because someone has to answer for it.

Five verses, all of them about one night, the night this surah is named for. Three of the four cleared translations say only that 'it' was sent down then; Sale (1734) supplies the Qur'an as what was sent. They agree on the rest: the night is better than a thousand months, angels and the Spirit descend in it by permission, and it is peace until dawn.
