He created the heavens and the earth with reason. He wraps the night around the day, and He wraps the day around the night. And He regulates the sun and the moon, each running along a specific course. He is indeed the Almighty, the Forgiver.
What does the Qur'an say about night and day 'wrapping' each other?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 39:5 He maketh night to succeed day and He maketh day to succeed night, and He constraineth the sun and the moon to give service, each running unto an appointed term. In because it is the verse the question's word comes from - the one the four translators render with the widest spread, from wrap and fold to succeed - and because it is where a reader can see the English carrying a decision.
- 02 7:54 He covereth the night with the day, WHICH IS IN HASTE TO FOLLOW IT. In because the pursuit clause is unique in the set and gives the alternation a motion of its own. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about creation in 'six days'? and Does the Qur'an describe a physical God seated on a throne?, each with its own reason.
- 03 3:27 Thou causest the night to pass into the day, and Thou causest the day to pass into the night; and Thou bringest forth the living from the dead. In because it is addressed to God in the second person, in a prayer, and because it sets the alternation beside life coming from death.
- 04 31:29 Hast thou not seen how God causeth the night to pass into the day and the day into the night, and hath subdued the sun and the moon, each running unto an appointed term? In because it puts the alternation and the courses of sun and moon in one sentence, which is the joint the two questions turn on. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the sun, the moon, and their orbits - and does it name a centre?, with a different reason there.
- 05 25:47 The daily cycle as a small death and resurrection - night a covering, sleep repose, day a rising. RESTORED BY THE EDITOR after it was recorded as a drop.
- 06 25:62 He it is Who hath appointed night and day in succession, FOR HIM WHO DESIRETH TO REMEMBER, OR DESIRETH THANKFULNESS. In because it states a purpose for the alternation, and the purpose is neither agricultural nor astronomical.
- 07 57:6 He causeth the night to pass into the day and the day to pass into the night, and He is Knower of all that is in the breasts. In because it moves from the alternation directly to what is hidden in people, which is the pattern several of these verses follow.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six verses, and the first thing to say is that the question's own word - wrapping - is a translator's choice.
39:5 is where it lives, and the translations part company there: Pickthall and Sale have night made to succeed day, Rodwell has night returning upon day, Palmer has day clothed with night, and Itani has night wrapped around day. A reader who has met this verse as evidence that the Qur'an describes a spherical earth has met one of those choices and not the others. This study puts the verse in and shows the spread rather than picking the reading.
What all the verses agree on is a continuous interchange, and several of them are less interested in the mechanism than in what it is FOR.
25:62 states a purpose outright, and it is not what a reader expects: He appointed night and day in succession FOR HIM WHO DESIRES TO REMEMBER, OR DESIRES THANKFULNESS. The alternation is given as an opportunity, not as a clock.
3:27 sets it beside bringing the living from the dead. 57:6 goes from it straight to knowing what is in people's breasts. 7:54 gives the day a pursuit - the night covered by the day, WHICH IS IN HASTE TO FOLLOW IT.
31:29 is the joint between this study and What does the Qur'an say about the sun, the moon, and their orbits - and does it name a centre?: the alternation and the appointed courses of sun and moon in a single sentence.
25:47 is carried here at the Editor's direction, and it is the strangest verse in the set. He made the night a COVERING, and sleep a REPOSE, and the day a RESURRECTION. The alternation the other five verses describe as an ordering of time is described here as a daily rehearsal of dying and being raised - which is what makes 3:27's move from the night and the day to bringing the living out of the dead look deliberate rather than incidental.
Eight verses were dropped, most of them near-identical repetitions of the ones kept. They are listed so the repetition is visible rather than inflating the count.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 39:5, widening across 7 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Is not to God that sincere faith is due? As for those who take guardians besides Him, "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to God." God will judge between them regarding their differences. God does not guide the lying blasphemer.
Surely pure religion is for Allah only. And those who choose protecting friends beside Him (say): We worship them only that they may bring us near unto Allah. Lo! Allah will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Lo! Allah guideth not him who is a liar, an ingrate
Aye! God's is the sincere religion: and those who take beside Him patrons - 'We do not serve them save that they may bring us near to God - 'Verily, God will judge between them concerning that whereon they do dispute. Verily, God guides not him who is a misbelieving liar
Is not a sincere worship due to God? But they who take others beside him as lords saying, "We serve them only that they may bring us near to God" - God will judge between them and the faithful, concerning that wherein they are at variance. Verily God will not guide him who is a liar, an infidel
Ought not the pure religion to be exhibited unto God? Is not the whole creation, and the empire thereof, his? Blessed be God, the Lord of all creatures

Are they waiting for anything but its fulfillment? The Day its fulfillment comes true, those who disregarded it before will say, "The messengers of our Lord did come with the truth. Have we any intercessors to intercede for us? Or, could we be sent back, to behave differently from the way we behaved before?" They ruined their souls, and what they used to invent has failed them.
Await they aught save the fulfilment thereof? On the day when the fulfilment thereof cometh, those who were before forgetful thereof will say: The messengers of our Lord did bring the Truth! Have we any intercessors, that they may intercede for us? Or can we be returned (to life on earth), that we may act otherwise than we used to act? They have lost their souls, and that which they devised hath failed them
Do they wait now for aught but its interpretation?- on the day when its interpretation shall come, those who forgot it before will say, There did come to us the apostles of our Lord in truth, have we intercessors to intercede for us? or, could we return, we would do otherwise than we did.' They have lost themselves, and that which they devised has strayed away from them
What have they to wait for now but its interpretation? When its interpretation shall come, they who aforetime were oblivious of it shall say, "The Prophets of our Lord did indeed bring the truth; shall we have any intercessor to intercede for us? or could we not be sent back? Then would we act otherwise than we have acted." But they have ruined themselves; and the deities of their own devising have fled from them
Do they wait for any other than the interpretation thereof? On the day whereon the interpretation thereof shall come, they who had forgotten the same before, shall say, now are we convinced by demonstration that the messengers of our Lord came unto us with truth: Shall we therefore have any intercessors, who will intercede for us? Or shall we be sent back into the world, that we may do other works than what we did in our life-time? But now have they lost their souls; and that which they impiously imagined, hath fled from them

Believers are not to take disbelievers for friends instead of believers. Whoever does that has nothing to do with God, unless it is to protect your own selves against them. God warns you to beware of Him. To God is the destiny.
Let not the believers take disbelievers for their friends in preference to believers. Whoso doeth that hath no connection with Allah unless (it be) that ye but guard yourselves against them, taking (as it were) security. Allah biddeth you beware (only) of Himself. Unto Allah is the journeying
Those who believe shall not take misbelievers for their patrons, rather than believers, and he who does this has no part with God at all, unless, indeed, ye fear some danger from them. But God bids you beware of Himself, for unto Him your journey is
Let not believers take infidels for their friends rather than believers: whoso shall do this hath nothing to hope from God - unless, indeed, ye fear a fear from them: But God would have you beware of Himself; for to God ye return

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 39:5, 7:54, 3:27, 31:29, 25:47, 25:62, 57:6, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - night + day + wrap; night + day + fold; night + day + cover; causeth + night + pass; night + upon + day; night + succeed + day. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 8 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 2:164; 2:274; 7:4; 13:3; 22:61; 24:58; 28:71; 35:13. The reason for each was not recorded.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. In the answer, an earlier version listed words for the verb at 39:5 that no translation on the page uses (folding, coiling); the words are now the translators' own. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
