Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good advice, and debate with them in the most dignified manner. Your Lord is aware of those who stray from His path, and He is aware of those who are guided.
Should I correct someone's religious practice in front of others?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 16:125 Itani has "Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good advice, and debate with them in the most dignified manner", and Rodwell has "dispute with them in the kindest manner". The verse leaves the judgment with God: Itani has "Your Lord is aware of those who stray from His path".
- 02 3:159 Itani has "Had you been harsh, hardhearted, they would have dispersed from around you", and Pickthall has "thou wast lenient with them". The verse goes on: Itani has "So pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the conduct of affairs".
- 03 49:11 Itani has "No people shall ridicule other people, for they may be better than they", and goes on "Nor shall you slander one another, nor shall you insult one another with names". Sale has "Neither defame one another".
- 04 71:9 The speaker describes calling others in both settings: Itani has "Then I appealed to them publicly, and I spoke to them privately", and Pickthall has "I have made public proclamation unto them, and I have appealed to them in private".
- 05 4:148 Itani has "God does not like the public uttering of bad language, unless someone was wronged", and Sale has "God loveth not the speaking ill of any one in public". Pickthall has "the utterance of harsh speech" and prints no word for public.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
None of the verses found for this question sets a rule that a correction must be made in private, or that it may be made in front of others. What they print is a manner, a limit on public speech, and one account of calling people in both settings.
The manner is in 16:125: Itani has "Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good advice, and debate with them in the most dignified manner". 3:159 says what harshness does: Itani has "Had you been harsh, hardhearted, they would have dispersed from around you".
The limits are in 49:11 and 4:148. At 49:11 Itani has "No people shall ridicule other people, for they may be better than they", and Sale has "Neither defame one another". At 4:148 Itani has "God does not like the public uttering of bad language, unless someone was wronged". The renderings of 4:148 differ: Sale has "the speaking ill of any one in public". Pickthall has "the utterance of harsh speech" and prints no word for public.
At 71:9 the speaker calls others both ways: Itani has "Then I appealed to them publicly, and I spoke to them privately".
Read together, the verses set a manner and a limit: wisdom and good advice, no harshness that drives people away, no ridicule, no public bad speech. Whether a given correction, in a given place, keeps within them is not something these verses decide.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 16:125, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

So be patient. Your patience is solely from God. And do not grieve over them, and do not be stressed by their schemes.
Endure thou patiently (O Muhammad). Thine endurance is only by (the help of) Allah. Grieve not for them, and be not in distress because of that which they devise
Be thou patient then; but thy patience is only in God's hands. Do not grieve about them; and be not in a strait at their craftiness
Endure then with patience. But thy patient endurance must be sought in none but God. And be not grieved about the infidels, and be not troubled at their devices

It is by of grace from God that you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh, hardhearted, they would have dispersed from around you. It was by the mercy of Allah that thou wast lenient with them (O Muhammad), for if thou hadst been stern and fierce of heart they would have dispersed from round about thee. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult with them upon the conduct of affairs. And when thou art resolved, then put thy trust in Allah. Lo! Allah loveth those who put their trust (in Him)
It was by a sort of mercy from God thou didst deal gently with them, for hadst thou been rough and rude of heart they had dispersed from around thee. But pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and take counsel with them in the affair. As for what thou hast resolved, rely upon God; verily, God loves those who do rely
Of the mercy of God thou hast spoken to them in gentle terms. Hadst thou been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from thee. Therefore, forgive and ask for pardon for them, and consult them in the affair of war, and when thou art resolved, then put thou thy trust in God, for God loveth those who trust in Him
And as to the mercy granted unto the disobedient from God, thou O Mohammed hast been mild towards them; but if thou hadst been severe, and hard-hearted, they had surely separated themselves from about thee. Therefore forgive them, and ask pardon for them: And consult them in the affair of war; and after thou hast deliberated, trust in God; for God loveth those who trust in Him

If you are killed in the cause of God, or die-forgiveness and mercy from God are better than what they hoard.
And what though ye be slain in Allah's way or die therein? Surely pardon from Allah and mercy are better than all that they amass
And if, indeed, ye be killed in God's way or die, surely forgiveness from God and mercy is better than what ye gather

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The anchors are a verse on the manner of calling others (16:125), a verse on gentleness and harshness toward those one is with (3:159), and a verse forbidding ridicule, defamation and insult among believers (49:11). One further verse was proposed with these and was not carried: its text speaks of suspicion, spying and speaking ill of another in their absence, not of correcting someone in front of others. The probe 'in private|privately|in public|publicly' returns 52 rows at 36 verses; two of them bear on the question and are carried: 71:9, where calling is done both publicly and privately, and 4:148, on the public utterance of bad speech. No verse found by that probe sets a rule on where a correction is to be made. This study does not say how or when anyone should correct another person's worship; any ruling on that comes from jurisprudence, a layer this platform does not hold or show.
