And they say, "None will enter Heaven unless he is a Jew or a Christian." These are their wishes. Say, "Produce your proof, if you are truthful."
What does 'bring your proof if you are truthful' mean?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:111 And they say: none entereth paradise unless he be a Jew or a Christian. THESE ARE THEIR OWN DESIRES. Say: BRING YOUR PROOF IF YE ARE TRUTHFUL. In because it is the fullest form: a claim is quoted, characterised as wishful, and answered by a demand for evidence rather than by a counter-claim.
- 02 21:24 Or have they chosen other gods beside Him? Say: BRING YOUR PROOF. This is the Reminder of those with me and those before me. In because the demand is made about the central claim of the whole book's opponents, and the speaker offers his own evidence in the same breath.
- 03 27:64 Is not He (best) Who produceth creation, then reproduceth it, and Who provideth for you from the heaven and the earth? Is there any God beside God? Say: BRING YOUR PROOF, if ye are truthful. In because the demand closes a series of rhetorical questions, so the reader can see what the text counts as its own argument before it asks for theirs.
- 04 28:75 And We shall take out from every nation A WITNESS, and We shall say: BRING YOUR PROOF. Then they will know that the Truth is God's. In because the same demand is made at the Judgment, which shows it is not merely a debating move.
- 05 53:23 They are but NAMES WHICH YE HAVE NAMED, ye and your fathers, FOR WHICH GOD HATH REVEALED NO WARRANT. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. In because it states the standard the demand rests on - a claim needs a warrant - and names its two substitutes: guesswork and wanting it to be so. ALSO CARRIED by the study Are there 'Satanic verses' in the Qur'an's history?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five verses, and the phrase is a rule of argument that the text applies to itself as well as to its opponents.
2:111 shows the whole move. A claim is quoted - none enters paradise unless he be a Jew or a Christian. It is then characterised: THESE ARE THEIR OWN DESIRES, the thing they would like to be true. And then, instead of a counter-assertion, a demand: BRING YOUR PROOF IF YE ARE TRUTHFUL.
53:23 states the standard the demand rests on, and it is exacting. What is being disputed are NAMES WHICH YE HAVE NAMED, ye and your fathers, FOR WHICH GOD HATH REVEALED NO WARRANT - and the verse names the two things people use instead of a warrant: conjecture, and what their own souls desire.
21:24 is the most even-handed instance, because the speaker does not simply demand and stop. Bring your proof - THIS IS THE REMINDER OF THOSE WITH ME AND THOSE BEFORE ME. He names his own evidence in the same sentence.
27:64 does the same at greater length, putting a series of questions about creation and provision first, and only then asking for the other side's grounds.
28:75 removes any suggestion that this is a rhetorical trick for this world only: at the Judgment, a witness is brought from every nation and the same words are used.
The demand is for a WARRANT - something revealed, or an argument - and the fault named is holding a position because it is inherited or congenial. The studies What does the Qur'an say about following forefathers blindly? and What does the Qur'an say about disputing without knowledge? carry the two forms of that fault; this study carries the standard they fail.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:111, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Au wamejifanyia miungu mingine badala yake? Sema: Leteni ushahidi wenu!

If there were in them gods other than God, they would have gone to ruin. So glory be to God, Lord of the Throne, beyond what they allege.
If there were therein gods beside Allah, then verily both (the heavens and the earth) had been disordered. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, from all that they ascribe (unto Him)
Were there in both (heaven and earth) gods beside God, both would surely have been corrupted. Celebrated then be the praise of God, the Lord of the throne, above what they ascribe

Delillerinizi getirin!" deriz. İşte o zaman hakikatin Allah’a ait olduğunu bilirler. Uydurmuş oldukları şeyler onlardan kaybolup gider.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:111, 21:24, 27:64, 28:75, 53:23, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - bring + your + proof; produce + your + proof; bring + proof + truthful; your + warrant. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 7:71 - near-identical to 53:23; also left out of What does the Qur'an say about the covenant taken from all souls before birth?; 7:203 - a demand for a sign, the reverse direction; 14:10 - the messengers' question.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
