God does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives anything less than that to whomever He wills. Whoever associates anything with God has devised a monstrous sin.
What is the unforgivable sin (shirk) in the Qur'an?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:48 Lo, GOD FORGIVETH NOT THAT A PARTNER SHOULD BE ASCRIBED UNTO HIM. He forgiveth all save that to whom He will. Whoso ascribeth partners to God, he hath indeed invented a tremendous sin. In because it is the verse the question is about and it states both the exception and its scope in one sentence. DUAL-PLACED with the study Does God forgive all sins?, where the reason is different.
- 02 31:13 And when Luqman said unto his son, exhorting him: O my dear son, ASCRIBE NO PARTNERS UNTO GOD; lo, to ascribe partners is A TREMENDOUS WRONG. In because it is a father instructing a child, which shows the matter treated as elementary, and because the word used is wrong or injustice rather than sin.
- 03 14:30 And they SET UP RIVALS TO GOD that they may mislead men from His way. In because it gives the social consequence - the rivals mislead others - which none of the other verses do.
- 04 9:31 THEY HAVE TAKEN AS LORDS BESIDE GOD their rabbis and their monks, and the Messiah son of Mary, when they were bidden to worship only One God. In because it is the only verse that names a form of it which is not idol-worship at all, and that is the most useful thing in this study for a modern reader.
- 05 31:15 But if they strive with thee to make thee ASCRIBE UNTO ME AS PARTNER that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not - yet consort with them in the world kindly. This verse names ascribing a partner to God as the one thing parents are not to be obeyed in, and in the same breath says to consort with them kindly. The verse before it, 31:14, is in What does the Qur'an say about the treatment of parents?
- 06 72:20 Say: I pray unto God only, AND ASCRIBE UNTO HIM NO PARTNER. In because it is the shortest positive statement of the opposite, put in the Prophet's own mouth.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six verses, and the most useful of them for a modern reader is not about idols.
4:48 is the statement: GOD FORGIVETH NOT that a partner should be ascribed to Him, and forgives everything short of that to whom He wills. It is repeated almost word for word at 4:116, and the study Does God forgive all sins? takes up what the pairing means for the reach of mercy. This study asks the other question: what is the thing itself?
The answers are broader than the word idolatry suggests.
9:31 is the one to sit with. It says people TOOK AS LORDS BESIDE GOD THEIR RABBIS AND THEIR MONKS, and the Messiah son of Mary. No statue is involved. What is described is deference to religious authority and to a revered figure, named as the thing 4:48 will not forgive.
14:30 adds that those who set up rivals do it TO MISLEAD MEN from the way - so the fault has a social direction, not only a private one.
31:13 puts the whole matter in a father's advice to his son and calls it, in the four renderings, a tremendous WRONG or injustice rather than a sin - the vocabulary of harm done, not of rule broken. 31:15 then makes it the single ground on which a parent may be disobeyed, and immediately requires that they still be treated kindly.
72:20 gives the positive form in five words.
What the text does not do is define the boundary. It does not say when reverence becomes ascription, and it gives no test. That is where the commentators and the jurists worked, and none of them has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:48, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Among the Jews are some who take words out of context, and say, "We hear and we disobey", and "Hear without listening", and "Observe us," twisting with their tongues and slandering the religion. Had they said, "We hear and we obey", and "Listen", and "Give us your attention," it would have been better for them, and more upright. But God has cursed them for their disbelief; they do not believe except a little.
Some of those who are Jews change words from their context and say: "We hear and disobey; hear thou as one who heareth not" and "Listen to us!" distorting with their tongues and slandering religion. If they had said: "We hear and we obey: hear thou, and look at us" it had been better for them, and more upright. But Allah hath cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not, save a few
And those who are Jews, and those who pervert the words from their places, and say, 'We hear but we rebel, and do thou listen without hearing,' and (who say) 'rahina,' distorting it with their tongues and taunting about religion., But had they said, 'We hear and we obey, so listen and look upon us,' it would have been better for them and more upright; - but may God curse them in their misbelief, for they will not believe except a few
Among the Jews are those who displace the words of their Scriptures, and say, "We have heard, and we have not obeyed. Hear thou, but as one that heareth not; and LOOK AT US;" perplexing with their tongues, and wounding the Faith by their revilings. But if they would say, "We have heard, and we obey; hear thou, and REGARD US;" it were better for them, and more right. But God hath cursed them for their unbelief. Few only of them are believers
Of the Jews there are some who pervert words from their places; and say, we have heard, and have disobeyed; and do thou hear without understanding our meaning, and look upon us: Perplexing with their tongues, and reviling the true religion. But if they had said, we have heard, and do obey; and do thou hear, and regard us: Certainly it were better for them, and more right. But God hath cursed them by reason of their infidelity; therefore a few of them only shall believe

We endowed Luqman with wisdom: "Give thanks to God." Whoever is appreciative-is appreciative for the benefit of his own soul. And whoever is unappreciative-God is Sufficient and Praiseworthy.
And verily We gave Luqman wisdom, saying: Give thanks unto Allah; and whosoever giveth thanks, he giveth thanks for (the good of) his soul. And whosoever refuseth - Lo! Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise
We did give unto Loqman wisdom, saying, 'Thank God; for he who thanks God is only thankful for his own soul; and he who is ungrateful - verily, God is independent, worthy of praise
Of old we bestowed wisdom upon LOKMAN, and taught him thus - "Be thankful to God: for whoever is thankful, is thankful to his own behoof; and if any shall be thankless . . . God truly is self-sufficient, worthy of all praise
We heretofore bestowed wisdom on Lokman, and commanded him, saying, be thou thankful unto God: For whoever is thankful, shall be thankful to the advantage of his own soul; and if any shall be unthankful, verily God is self-sufficient, and worthy to be praised

Jie (judėjai ir krikščionys) laikė savo rabinus ir savo vienuolius savo viešpačiais šalia Allaho (paklusdami jiems tame, ką jie pagal savo pačių norus, nesant Allaho įsakymo, padarė leistinu arba neleistinu), ir (jie laikė savo Viešpačiu) Mesiją, Marjamos (Marijos) sūnų, nors jiems (judėjams ir krikščionims) buvo įsakyta [Taurate (Toroje) ir Indžylyje (Evangelijoje)] negarbinti nieko kito, tik Vieną Ilah (Dievą – Allahą) La ilaha illa Huva (niekas neturi teisės būti garbinamas, tik Jis).

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:48, 31:13, 14:30, 9:31, 31:15, 72:20, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - forgiveth + not + partner; pardon + not + giving + him + equal; ascribe + partner + him; shirk; set + up + rivals + god; associating + god + great + wrong. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 12 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:22 - near-identical in force to 14:30, though it adds 'when ye know'; 3:64 - the common-word verse - it belongs to the study What common ground does the Qur'an offer the People of the Book?; 4:36 - the clause opens the duties list - carried by four other studies already; 6:1 - general; 6:151 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the treatment of parents?; 13:36 - matched incidentally; 27:60 - the rhetorical-question series; 27:63 - the same; carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about winds and rain as signs?; 34:33 - a dispute between the followers and the proud on the Day; 39:67 - carried by Are God's 'hand' and 'face' in the Qur'an literal or figurative?; 52:43 - the rhetorical-question series; 59:23 - carried by What are the names and attributes of God in the Qur'an?
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. At 31:15, the reason said another study carries this verse, which it does not; it now names the verse that study carries. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
