Your Lord has said, "Pray to Me, and I will respond to you. But those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell forcibly."
What does the Qur'an say about crying out to God in distress?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 40:60 And your Lord hath said: PRAY UNTO ME AND I WILL HEAR YOUR PRAYER. Lo, those who scorn My service, they will enter hell disgraced. In because it is the plainest invitation in the text and because the second half makes not asking a form of scorn.
- 02 27:62 Is not He best WHO ANSWERETH THE WRONGED ONE WHEN HE CRIETH UNTO HIM, and removeth the evil, and hath made you viceroys of the earth? In because the person specified is the WRONGED one, which narrows and sharpens the promise. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about humans as stewards (khalifa) and the trust of the earth?, with a different reason there.
- 03 17:67 And when harm toucheth you upon the sea, ALL UNTO WHOM YE CRY FOR SUCCOUR FAIL SAVE HIM ALONE; but when He bringeth you safe to land, ye turn away. In because it observes what people actually do in terror and what they do afterwards, and the second half is the point.
- 04 39:49 Now when hurt toucheth a man he crieth unto Us, and afterward when We have granted him a boon from Us, he saith: ONLY BY MY OWN KNOWLEDGE HAVE I BEEN GIVEN IT. Nay, it is a test. In because it names the specific ingratitude that follows rescue and calls the rescue itself a test.
- 05 39:8 And when some hurt toucheth man, he crieth unto his Lord, turning unto Him repentant; then when He granteth him a boon from Him he forgetteth that for which he cried unto Him before. In because it describes the forgetting rather than the boasting, which is the milder and commoner form.
- 06 6:40 Say: can ye see yourselves, if the punishment of God come upon you or the Hour come upon you, calling upon other than God? In because it is put as a question to the reader about their own behaviour under extremity, and expects the reader to know the answer.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six verses, and the surprise is that most of them are not about the crying out at all. They are about what happens afterwards.
40:60 gives the invitation, and it is unconditional: PRAY UNTO ME AND I WILL HEAR YOUR PRAYER. It then does something unexpected by treating the refusal to ask as arrogance - those who SCORN My service.
27:62 narrows the promise usefully. The one answered is THE WRONGED ONE who cries out - not anyone in difficulty, but someone who has been done an injustice.
Then three verses in a row observe human behaviour with a cold eye. 17:67: at sea, in danger, everyone you normally call on fails, and you call on Him - and when you are safely ashore, YE TURN AWAY. 39:8: he cries out, and when the boon comes he FORGETS what he cried for. 39:49: worse, he says ONLY BY MY OWN KNOWLEDGE HAVE I BEEN GIVEN IT - and the verse adds that the granting was itself a test.
6:40 turns it into a question aimed at the reader: if real disaster came, would you be calling on anything else?
So the Qur'an's treatment of crying out in distress is not primarily consolation. It is an invitation, followed by an unflattering description of the person who accepts it only under pressure. A reader in trouble is entitled to 40:60 and 27:62. They should also see that the text expects them to forget, and says so three times.
The related material on reliance and on not despairing is carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about reliance on God (tawakkul)? and What does the Qur'an say about not despairing of God's mercy?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 40:60, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Кад човека снађе каква невоља, Нама се моли; а кад му Ми после благодат пружимо, онда говори: „Ово ми је дато због мог знања!“ А није тако, то је само искушење, али већина њих не зна.

If those who did wrong owned everything on earth, and the like of it with it, they would redeem themselves with it from the terrible suffering on the Day of Resurrection. But there will appear to them from God what they never anticipated.
And though those who do wrong possess all that is in the earth, and therewith as much again, they verily will seek to ransom themselves therewith on the Day of Resurrection from the awful doom; and there will appear unto them, from their Lord, that wherewith they never reckoned
And had those who do wrong all that is in the earth, and the like thereof with it, they would ransom themselves therewith from the evil of the torment on the resurrection day! but there shall appear to them from God that which they had not reckoned on

And the evils that they earned will appear unto them, and that whereat they used to scoff will surround them

When some adversity touches the human being, he prays to his Lord, repenting to Him. But then, when He confers on him a grace of His, he forgets what he was praying for before, and he attributes rivals to God, in order to lead astray from His way. Say, "Enjoy your disbelief for a little while; you will be among the inmates of the Fire."

Then, when He granteth him a boon from Him he forgetteth that for which he cried unto Him before, and setteth up rivals to Allah that he may beguile (men) from his way. Say (O Muhammad, unto such an one): Take pleasure in thy disbelief a while. Lo! thou art of the owners of the Fire

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

In fact, it is Him you will call upon; and if He wills, he will remove what you called Him for, and you will forget what you idolized.
Nay, but unto Him ye call, and He removeth that because of which ye call unto Him, if He will, and ye forget whatever partners ye ascribed unto Him
Nay, it is on Him that ye would call, and He will avert that which ye call upon Him for if He but please; and ye shall forget that which ye did associate with Him
Yes! to Him will ye cry: and if He please He will deliver you from that ye shall cry to Him to avert, and ye shall forget the partners ye joined with Him
Nay, but on Him alone will you call; then will He remove, if He pleases, that which you call on Him to remove, and you will forget what you associate with Him

We sent messengers to communities before you, and We afflicted them with suffering and hardship, that they may humble themselves.
We have sent already unto peoples that were before thee, and We visited them with tribulation and adversity, in order that they might grow humble
Ere this we sent unto nations before thee, and we caught them in distress and trouble that haply they might humble themselves
Already have we sent apostles to nations that were before thee, and we laid hold on them with troubles and with straits in order that they might humble themselves

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 40:60, 27:62, 17:67, 39:49, 39:8, 6:40, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - cry + unto + him + fear + hope; answereth + distressed; removeth + evil; when + harm + toucheth + man; call + upon + me + answer. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 17:57 - the subject is that the intermediaries are themselves petitioners - closer to intercession.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
