"O my sons, go and inquire about Joseph and his brother, and do not despair of God's comfort. None despairs of God's comfort except the disbelieving people."
What does the Qur'an say about not despairing of God's mercy?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 12:87 Jacob tells his sons not to despair, and gives a reason. The four part company on the word itself - mercy, comfort, Spirit.
- 02 15:56 Abraham asks who despairs of the mercy of his Lord but those who err. In as the question form of the same statement.
- 03 29:23 Describes despair of mercy as the state of those who disbelieve in the signs. In because it describes rather than instructs.
- 04 30:36 Describes people who rejoice when mercy is tasted and despair when evil follows their own deeds.
- 05 39:53 Addressed to those who have gone furthest against themselves, and still says do not despair. The widest statement in the set.
- 06 60:13 Describes a people who have despaired of the hereafter. Included as a description rather than an instruction, like 29:23.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Three of these verses say it directly. Jacob tells his sons not to despair of God's mercy, and adds that none despairs of it but disbelieving people (12:87). Abraham asks who despairs of the mercy of his Lord but those who err (15:56). And 39:53 is addressed to those who have gone furthest: say to my servants who have transgressed against their own souls, do not despair of the mercy of God, who forgives all sins.
The other three describe despair rather than forbidding it - of those who disbelieve in the signs (29:23), of people who rejoice in mercy and despair when evil touches them (30:36), and of a people who have despaired of the hereafter (60:13). Palmer renders the word in 12:87 as God's "comfort" and Pickthall as the "Spirit of Allah", where Sale and Rodwell have "mercy"; the four do not agree, and this study does not choose.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: no source has cleared the rights audit. It does not report how any commentator has read them: no has cleared it either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no cleared English edition exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading, because that layer is not built. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 12:87, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The evils of their deeds caught up with them. And the wrongdoers among these will also be afflicted by the evils of what they earned, and they cannot prevent it.
But the evils that they earned smote them; and such of these as do wrong, the evils that they earn will smite them; they cannot escape
and there befell them the evil deeds of what they had earned: and those who do wrong of these (Meccans), there shall befall them too the evil deeds of what they had earned, nor shall they frustrate Him
And their own ill deeds recoiled upon them. And whoso among these (Meccans) shall do wrong, on them likewise their own misdeeds shall light, neither shall they invalidate God
and the evils which they had deserved, fell upon them. And whoever of these Meccans shall have acted unjustly, on them likewise shall fall the evils which they shall have deserved; neither shall they frustrate the divine vengeance

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 12:87, 15:56, 29:23, 30:36, 39:53, 60:13, in full, and nothing else. No , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography was consulted, because none has cleared the rights audit. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set began as a word search over the four public-domain renderings, run in mushaf order with no relevance ordering, and was then confirmed by the Editor. Why each verse is in the study is stated per verse in the selection, and is signed with this prose.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
