When two groups among you almost faltered, but God was their Protector. So in God let the believers put their trust.
What does the Qur'an say about reliance on God (tawakkul)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 3:122 The recurring sentence placed after two companies almost lost heart. In because the trust is named after the failure, not before it.
- 02 3:159 Pairs pardoning, asking forgiveness and consulting them with trusting once resolved. The one verse in the set that puts trust after a decision has been taken.
- 03 3:160 Puts the sentence after a question about who could help if God withdrew his help.
- 04 4:81 Tells the Prophet to turn from those who plan by night and to trust, with God named as sufficient.
- 05 5:11 Puts the sentence after hands were restrained from reaching the believers.
- 06 5:23 Two men say to enter by the gate, and then to trust. In because the act and the trust are given in one instruction.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
One sentence recurs across these verses: in God let the believers put their trust (3:122, 3:160, 5:11). It is placed after events, not before them - after two companies almost lost heart, after a question about who could help if God withdrew, after hands were restrained.
3:159 is the one that says most about what it is not. The Prophet is told to pardon, to ask forgiveness, and to consult them on the matter - and then, when he has resolved, to trust in God. In all four renderings the turning to God comes after the consulting and the resolve, never before it. The word differs: Palmer writes rely at all six verses and Sale writes trust at all six, while Pickthall writes put thy trust, put their trust or put your trust as the verse is addressed, and Rodwell uses plain trust at three verses and a put-form at the other three. The order is the same under every one of them. 5:23 puts it the same way: enter by the gate, and trust.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 3:122, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

When two parties of you almost fell away, and Allah was their Protecting Friend. In Allah let believers put their trust
when two companies of you were on the point of showing cowardice; but God was their guardian, for on God surely the believers do rely
When two troops of you became full of anxious thoughts, and lost heart, and when God became the protector of both! In God, then, let the faithful trust
when two companies of you were anxiously thoughtful, so that ye became faint-hearted; but God was the supporter of them both; and in God let the faithful trust

It is by of grace from God that you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh, hardhearted, they would have dispersed from around you. It was by the mercy of Allah that thou wast lenient with them (O Muhammad), for if thou hadst been stern and fierce of heart they would have dispersed from round about thee. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult with them upon the conduct of affairs. And when thou art resolved, then put thy trust in Allah. Lo! Allah loveth those who put their trust (in Him)
It was by a sort of mercy from God thou didst deal gently with them, for hadst thou been rough and rude of heart they had dispersed from around thee. But pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and take counsel with them in the affair. As for what thou hast resolved, rely upon God; verily, God loves those who do rely
Of the mercy of God thou hast spoken to them in gentle terms. Hadst thou been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from thee. Therefore, forgive and ask for pardon for them, and consult them in the affair of war, and when thou art resolved, then put thou thy trust in God, for God loveth those who trust in Him

If you are killed in the cause of God, or die-forgiveness and mercy from God are better than what they hoard.
And what though ye be slain in Allah's way or die therein? Surely pardon from Allah and mercy are better than all that they amass
And if, indeed, ye be killed in God's way or die, surely forgiveness from God and mercy is better than what ye gather
And if ye shall be slain or die on the path of God, then pardon from God and mercy is better than all your amassings
Moreover if ye be slain, or die in defence of the religion of God; verily pardon from God, and mercy is better than what they heap together of worldly riches

It is by of grace from God that you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh, hardhearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the conduct of affairs. And when you make a decision, put your trust in God; God loves the trusting.
Therefore, forgive and ask for pardon for them, and consult them in the affair of war, and when thou art resolved, then put thou thy trust in God, for God loveth those who trust in Him
And as to the mercy granted unto the disobedient from God, thou O Mohammed hast been mild towards them; but if thou hadst been severe, and hard-hearted, they had surely separated themselves from about thee. Therefore forgive them, and ask pardon for them: And consult them in the affair of war; and after thou hast deliberated, trust in God; for God loveth those who trust in Him

When some news of security or alarm comes their way, they broadcast it. God received a pledge from the Children of Israel, and We raised among them twelve chiefs. God said, "I am with you; if you perform the prayer, and pay the alms, and believe in My messengers and support them, and lend God a loan of righteousness; I will remit your sins, and admit you into Gardens beneath which rivers flow. But whoever among you disbelieves afterwards has strayed from the right way."
Allah made a covenant of old with the Children of Israel and We raised among them twelve chieftains, and Allah said: Lo! I am with you. If ye establish worship and pay the poor-due, and believe in My messengers and support them, and lend unto Allah a kindly loan, surely I shall remit your sins, and surely I shall bring you into Gardens underneath which rivers flow. Whoso among you disbelieveth after this will go astray from a plain road

But whoso of you after this believeth not, hath gone astray from the even path

And because of their breaking their covenant, We have cursed them and made hard their hearts. They change words from their context and forget a part of that whereof they were admonished. Thou wilt not cease to discover treachery from all save a few of them. But bear with them and pardon them. Lo! Allah loveth the kindly

But for their breaking their covenant we have cursed them, and have hardened their hearts. They shift the words of Scripture from their places, and have forgotten part of what they were taught. Wherefore because they have broken their covenant, we have cursed them, and hardened their hearts; they dislocate the words of the pentateuch from their places, and have forgotten part of what they were admonished; and thou wilt not cease to discover deceitful practices among them, except a few of them. - Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four translations that had cleared when this study was written - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 3:122, 3:159, 3:160, 4:81, 5:11, 5:23, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
The basis this restatement was written over. This study was signed on 5 September 2026, when four English renderings had cleared. Itani 2012 cleared on 7 September 2026, and five have cleared since. The verse selection, the reading and every finding here are the work done over those four; the divergence figures below are the live measure, computed over all five. Nothing here has been re-read against Itani, and no finding claims his agreement.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set began as a word search over the four renderings then cleared, run in mushaf order with no relevance ordering, and was then confirmed by the Editor. Why each verse is in the study is stated per verse in the selection, and is signed with this prose. THE PROBE TERMS WERE NOT RECORDED AT THE TIME AND CANNOT BE REPRODUCED, so that search has not been re-run over five and this restatement does not claim it was. The verse set is therefore exactly the set signed on 5 September 2026, unchanged: no verse was added and none was dropped.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. The derived divergence measure is computed over all five cleared renderings, Itani included, and is restated here so that this page and every verse page report the same measure. Across this set it runs from band 1 at 5:23 (0.52), where the five stand closest, to band 5 at 3:122 (0.72), where they stand furthest apart. The version signed when four translations were cleared gave band 1 at 5:23 (0.49) and band 5 at 3:122 (0.74); the two endpoint verses are unchanged, the figures are not. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
