This study is a MERGE. Stewardship (khalifa) and the trust of the earth are taken here as one question, because 2:30 with 33:72 shows they are two halves of one account.
2:30 is the founding verse, and what makes it remarkable is that the objection is never withdrawn. God announces a viceroy in the earth. The angels ask: will You put there one who will corrupt it and shed blood? The answer is not a denial. It is I know what you do not know. The text records the charge against humanity at the moment the office is created, and leaves it standing.
33:72 returns the verdict. The trust was offered to the heavens, the earth and the mountains, and they refused it out of fear; man took it up - AND HE HAS PROVED A TYRANT AND A FOOL. That is the text's own assessment, in the same verse that describes the acceptance.
Between those two, three verses say what the office is FOR, and all three say the same thing: a test. 6:165 - that He may try you by what He has given you. 10:14 - that We might see how ye behave. 27:62 puts it beside answering the person who is wronged.
So the word usually translated viceroy, vicegerent or successor does not, in these verses, carry a grant of ownership or licence. Every verse that explains it explains it as an examination, and the two verses that evaluate the result - 2:30 and 33:72 - are the two harshest.
A reader coming to this looking for a Qur'anic environmental ethic will find the structure for one. They should also be told that the same verses are strikingly pessimistic about the office-holder, and that no verse here specifies a duty of care to any particular part of the creation.

और (ऐ नबी! याद कीजिए) जब आपके पालनहार ने फ़रिश्तों से कहा कि मैं धरती में एक ख़लीफ़ा[14] बनाने वाला हूँ। उन्होंने कहा : क्या तू उसमें उसको बनाएगा, जो उसमें उपद्रव करेगा तथा बहुत रक्तपात करेगा, जबकि हम तेरी प्रशंसा के साथ तेरा गुणगान करते और तेरी पवित्रता का वर्णन करते हैं। (अल्लाह ने) फरमाया : निःसंदेह मैं जानता हूँ जो तुम नहीं जानते।

How can ye disbelieve in God, when ye were dead and He made you alive, and then He will kill you and then make you alive again, and then to Him will ye return
How can ye withhold faith from God? Ye were dead and He gave you life; next He will cause you to die; next He will restore you to life: next shall ye return to Him
How is it that ye believe not in God? Since ye were dead, and He gave you life; He will hereafter cause you to die, and will again restore you to life; then shall ye return unto Him

আর তিনিই তোমাদেরকে পৃথিবীর প্রতিনিধি বানিয়েছেন এবং তিনি তোমাদেরকে যা দিয়েছেন, সে বিষয়ে পরীক্ষা করার উদ্দেশ্যে তোমাদের কিছু লোককে অন্যের উপর উচ্চ মর্যাদা দিয়েছেন। নিশ্চয় তোমার রব দ্রুত শাস্তি প্রদানকারী এবং নিশ্চয় তিনি পরম ক্ষমাশীল, অতি দয়ালু।
On čini da jedni druge na Zemlji smjenjujete i On vas po položajima jedne iznad drugih uzdiže, da bi vas iskušao u onome što vam daje. Gospodar tvoj, zaista, brzo kažnjava, ali On je, uistinu, i Onaj Koji oprašta grijehe i milostiv je.

და (მხოლოდ) იგია, ვინც დაგაყენათ მემკვიდრეებად [ერთმანეთის] დედამიწაზე და აამაღლა ზოგი თქვენგანი სხვებზე ხარისხებით, რათა გამოგცადოთ იმით, რაც მან თქვენ მოგანიჭათ. ჭეშმარიტად, შენი უფალი სწრაფია სასჯელში, და ჭეშმარიტად, იგია მიმტევებელი, შემწყალებელი.
Und Er ist es, Der euch zu Nachfolgern (auf) der Erde gemacht und die einen von euch über die anderen um Rangstufen erhöht hat, damit Er euch mit dem, was Er euch gegeben hat, prüfe. Wahrlich, dein Herr ist schnell im Bestrafen, aber Er ist auch wahrlich allvergebend und barmherzig.
Είναι Αυτός που σας έκανε γενιές -η μια μετά από την άλλη- στη γη, και έχει αναδείξει κάποιους από εσάς πάνω από κάποιους άλλους σε επίπεδα (βιοπορισμού και δημιουργίας), ώστε να σας δοκιμάσει μέσω αυτών που σας έχει παραχωρήσει. Στ’ αλήθεια, ο Κύριός σου (ω, Μωχάμμαντ) είναι Γρήγορος στην τιμωρία, και επίσης είναι Γαφούρ (Αυτός που συγχωρεί τα πάντα) και Ραχείμ (Πολυεύσπλαχνος).
E Lui è Colui che vi ha resi eredi gli uni degli altri in terra, e che vi ha elevati gli uni sopra gli altri di gradi, per mettervi alla prova su ciò che vi ha dato: in verità il tuo Dio è rapido nella punizione, e in verità è Perdonatore, Misericordioso.
165. Ir tai Jis, Kuris sukūrė jus karta, einančia po kartos, pakeičiančius vienas kitą žemėje. Naye ndiye aliyewafanya kuwa wafuatizi (makhalifa) katika ardhi, na amewanyanyua baadhi yenu juu ya wengine daraja mbalimbali ili akujaribuni katika hayo aliyowapa. Hakika Mola wako Mlezi ni Mwepesi wa kuadhibu, na hakika Yeye ni Mwenye kufuta dhambi zaidi, Mwenye kurehemu sana.
Det är han som har gjort er till efterträdare på jorden, och han har höjt somliga av er över andra i rang, för att pröva er med det han har gett er. Din Herre är snabb att straffa, och han är sannerligen ständigt förlåtande, barmhärtig.

He hath no companion. This have I been commanded: I am the first Moslem

Say, "Am I to seek a Lord other than God, when He is the Lord of all things?" No soul gets except what it is due, and no soul bears the burdens of another. Then to your Lord is your return, then He will inform you regarding your disputes.
Say: Shall I seek another than Allah for Lord, when He is Lord of all things? Each soul earneth only on its own account, nor doth any laden bear another's load. Then unto your Lord is your return and He will tell you that wherein ye differed
Say, 'Other than God shall I crave for a Lord when He is Lord of all?' but no soul shall earn aught save against itself; nor shall one bearing a burden bear the burden of another; and then unto your Lord is your return, and He will inform you concerning that whereon ye do dispute
SAY: Shall I seek any other Lord than God, when He is Lord of all things? No soul shall labour but for itself; and no burdened one shall bear another's burden. At last ye shall return to your Lord, and he will declare that to you about which you differ
Say, shall I desire any other Lord besides God? Since He is the Lord of all things; and no soul shall acquire any merits or demerits but for itself; and no burdened soul shall bear the burden of another. Moreover unto your Lord shall ye return; and He shall declare unto you that concerning which ye now dispute

DIN 31635waʾiḏā massa l-ʾinsāna ḍ-ḍurru daʿānā liǧanbihi ʾaw qāʿidan ʾaw qāʾiman falammā kašafnā ʿanhu ḍurrahu marra kaʾan lam yadʿunā ʾilā ḍurrin massahu kaḏālika zuyyina lilmusrifīna mā kānū yaʿmalūna
Whenever adversity touches the human being, he prays to Us-reclining on his side, or sitting, or standing. But when We have relieved his adversity from him, he goes away, as though he had never called on Us for trouble that had afflicted him. Thus the deeds of the transgressors appear good to them.
And if misfortune touch a man he crieth unto Us, (while reclining) on his side, or sitting or standing, but when We have relieved him of the misfortune he goeth his way as though he had not cried unto Us because of a misfortune that afflicted him. Thus is what they do made (seeming) fair unto the prodigal
When distress touches man, he calls us to his side, whether sitting or standing; but when we have removed from him his distress, he passes on as though he had not called on us in a distress that touched him. Thus unto the extravagant is made seemly that which they have done
When trouble toucheth a man, he crieth to us, on his side, or sitting, or standing; and when we withdraw his trouble from him, he passeth on as though he had not called on us against the trouble which touched him! Thus are the deeds of transgressors pre-arranged for them
When evil befalleth a man; he prayeth unto Us lying on his side, or sitting, or standing: But when We deliver him from his affliction, he continueth his former course of life, as though he had not called upon Us to defend him against the evil which had befallen him. Thus was that which the transgressors committed prepared for them
وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَا ٱلْقُرُونَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَمَّا ظَلَمُوا۟ وَجَآءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ لِيُؤْمِنُوا۟ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

We destroyed generations before you when they did wrong. Their messengers came to them with clear signs, but they would not believe. Thus We requite the sinful people.
We destroyed the generations before you when they did wrong; and their messengers (from Allah) came unto them with clear proofs (of His Sovereignty) but they would not believe. Thus do We reward the guilty folk
We have already destroyed generations before you when they did wrong, and there came to them their apostles with manifest signs, but they would not believe. Thus do we reward the sinful people
And of old destroyed we generations before you, when they had acted wickedly, and their Apostles had come to them with clear tokens of their mission, and they would not believe: - thus reward we the wicked
We have formerly destroyed the generations who were before you, O men of Mecca, when they had acted unjustly, and our apostles had come unto them with evident miracles and they would not believe. Thus do We reward the wicked people

And when Our clear revelations are recited to them, those who do not hope to meet Us say, "Bring a Quran other than this, or change it." Say, "It is not for me to change it of my own accord. I only follow what is revealed to me. I fear, if I disobeyed my Lord, the torment of a terrible Day."
And when Our clear revelations are recited unto them, they who look not for the meeting with Us say: Bring a Lecture other than this, or change it. Say (O Muhammad): It is not for me to change it of my accord. I only follow that which is inspired in me. Lo! if I disobey my Lord I fear the retribution of an awful Day
But when our evident signs are recited to them, those who hope not for our meeting say, 'Bring a Qur'an other than this; or change it.' Say, 'It is not for me to change it of my own accord; I do not follow aught but what I am inspired with; verily, I fear, if I rebel against my Lord, the torment of a mighty day
But when our clear signs are recited to them, they who look not forward to meet Us, say, "Bring a different Koran from this, or make some change in it." SAY: It is not for me to change it as mine own soul prompteth. I follow only what is revealed to me: verily, I fear, if I rebel against my Lord, the punishment of a great day
When our evident signs are recited unto them, they who hope not to meet us at the resurrection, say, bring a different Koran from this; or make some change therein. Answer, it is not fit for me, that I should change it at my pleasure: I follow that only which is revealed unto me. Verily I fear, if I should be disobedient unto my Lord, the punishment of the great day
قُل لَّوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مَا تَلَوْتُهُۥ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَآ أَدْرَىٰكُم بِهِۦ فَقَدْ لَبِثْتُ فِيكُمْ عُمُرًا مِّن قَبْلِهِۦٓ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

DIN 31635qul law šāʾa llāhu mā talawtuhu ʿalaykum walā ʾadrākum bihi faqad labiṯtu fīkum ʿumuran min qablihi ʾafalā taʿqilūna
Say, "Had God willed, I would not have recited it to you, and He would not have made it known to you. I have lived among you for a lifetime before it. Do you not understand?"
Say: If Allah had so willed I should not have recited it to you nor would He have made it known to you. I dwelt among you a whole lifetime before it (came to me). Have ye then no sense
Say, 'Had God pleased, I should not have recited it to you, nor taught you therewith. I have tarried a lifetime amongst you before it;- have ye not then any sense
SAY: Had God so pleased, I had not recited it to you, neither had I taught it to you. Already have I dwelt among you for years, ere it was revealed to me. Understand ye not
Say, if God had so pleased, I had not read it unto you, neither had I taught you the same. I have already dwelt among you to the age of forty years, before I received it. Do ye not therefore understand

[ცრუ ღმერთები უკეთესია თუ] ის ვინც პასუხობს გაჭირვებულის ვედრებას, როცა მოუხმობს მას და ააცილებს სიავეს და გქმნით თქვენ დედამიწის მემკვიდრეებად. განა არის ალლაჰთან ერთად სხვა ღვთაება [რომელიც იგივეს აკეთებს] ? რა მცირეა, რასაც შეიგონებთ.
Oder (ist besser) Wer den in einer Notlage Befindlichen erhört, wenn er Ihn anruft, und das Schlechte hinwegnimmt und euch zu Nachfolgern (auf) der Erde macht? Gibt es denn einen (anderen) Anbetungswürdigen neben Allah? Wie wenig ihr doch bedenkt!
(Είναι η λατρεία προς τους λεγόμενους θεούς τους καλύτερη) ή προς Αυτόν που ανταποκρίνεται στην επίκληση εκείνου που Τον επικαλείτε ενώ βρίσκεται σε μεγάλες κακουχίες (και σε ανάγκη), και ο Οποίος αφαιρεί τις κακουχίες και κάνει εσάς να διαδέχεστε η μία γενιά την άλλη στη γη; Υπάρχει κάποιος άλλος θεός (που κάνει αυτά) μαζί με τον Αλλάχ; Λίγο είναι αυτό που λαμβάνετε υπόψη από την νουθεσία!
या वह जो व्याकुल की प्रार्थना स्वीकार करता है, जब वह उसे पुकारता है और दुखों को दूर करता है और तुम्हें धरती का उत्तराधिकारी बनाता है? क्या अल्लाह के साथ कोई (अन्य) पूज्य है? तुम बहुत कम उपदेश ग्रहण करते हो।
O chi è Colui che esaudisce la preghiera del supplicante, se lo supplica, e sventa il male e vi rende eredi della terra? C’è un’altra divinità insieme ad Allāh? ﴿أَءِلَهٌ مَعَ اللَّهِ﴾ Quanto poco ricordate!
62. Ar ne Jis (geresnis, nei jūsų dievai), Kuris atsako kenčiančiam, kai jis Jo šaukiasi, ir Kuris panaikina blogį, ir padaro jus žemės paveldėtojais, kartas po kartų? Ar yra koks nors ilah (dievas) su Allahu? Mažai jūs prisimenate.
Sila Isa yeroo namni rakkataan (muddamaan) Isa kadhate jalaa awwaatee hamtuu saaquufi bakka bu’oota dachii isin taasisu (moo waan isaan Rabbitti dabalantu caala)? Sila Rabbii wajjin gabbaramaan biraa ni jiraa? Hangi isin gorfamtan xiqqaadha.
Или Тот, Который отвечает оказавшемуся в беде, когда он взывает к Нему, и отводит беду, и делает вас наместниками на земле? Неужели есть божество наряду с Аллахом? Как же мало вы внемлите напоминанию!
Онај Који се невољнику, кад Му се обрати, одазива, и Који зло отклања и Који вас на Земљи једне другима смењује. Зар поред Аллаха постоји други бог?! Како никако поуку ви да примите!
Au ni nani yule anayemjibu mwenye shida kubwa pale anapomwomba, na akaiondoa dhiki, na akawafanya warithi wa ardhi? Je, yupo mungu pamoja na Mwenyezi Mungu? Ni machache mnayoyazingatia.
Är det inte han som bönhör den nödställde när han ber till honom och som tar bort det onda och gör er till efterträdare på jorden? Finns det någon annan gud, vid Guds sida? Vad lite ni tänker efter!
(Ortak koştuklarınız mı hayırlı) Yoksa darda kalana kendisine dua ettiği zaman icabet eden, sıkıntıyı gideren ve sizi yeryüzünün halifeleri kılan mı? Allah ile birlikte başka bir ilah mı var? Ne kadar da az düşünüyorsunuz.

Or, who created the heavens and the earth, and rains down water from the sky for you? With it We produce gardens full of beauty, whose trees you could not have produced. Is there another god with God? But they are a people who equate.
Is not He (best) Who created the heavens and the earth, and sendeth down for you water from the sky wherewith We cause to spring forth joyous orchards, whose trees it never hath been yours to cause to grow. Is there any Allah beside Allah? Nay, but they are folk who ascribe equals (unto Him)
He who created the heavens and the earth; and sends down upon you from the heaven water; and we cause to grow therewith gardens fraught with beauty; ye could not cause the trees thereof to grow! Is there a god with God? nay, but they are a people who make peers with Him
Is not He who hath made the Heavens and the Earth, and hath sent down rain to you from Heaven, by which we cause the luxuriant groves to spring up! It is not in your power to cause its trees to spring up! What! A god with God? Yet they find equals for Him
Is not He to be preferred, who hath created the heavens and the earth, and sendeth down rain for you from heaven, whereby We cause delicious groves to spring up? It is not in your power to cause the trees thereof to shoot forth. Is there any other god partner with the true God? Verily these are a people who deviate from the truth

He who made the earth, settled, and placed amongst it rivers; and placed upon it firm mountains; and placed between the two seas a barrier; is there a god with God? nay, but most of them know not
Is not He, who hath set the earth so firm, and hath made rivers in its midst, and hath placed mountains upon it, and put a barrier between the two seas? What! a god with God? Yet the greater part of them have no knowledge
Is not He more worthy to be adored, who hath established the earth, and hath caused rivers to flow through the midst thereof, and placed thereon immovable mountains, and set a bar between the two seas? Is there any other god equal with the true God? Yet the greater part of them know it not

নিশ্চয় আমি আসমানসমূহ, জমিন ও পর্বতমালার প্রতি এ আমানত(৩৪) পেশ করেছিলাম। অতঃপর তারা তা বহন করতে অস্বীকার করল এবং এতে ভীত হলো। আর মানুষ তা বহন করল। নিশ্চয় সে ছিলো অতিশয় যালিম, একান্তই অজ্ঞ।

ჭეშმარიტად, ჩვენ ცებს, მიწას და მთებს შევთავაზეთ (განსაკუთრებული) პასუხისმგებლობის[1] აღება, მაგრამ მათ უარი თქვეს მის ტარებაზე და შეეშინდათ მისი [რომ ვერ შეძლებდნენ მის შესრულებას]. ხოლო იტვირთა იგი ადამიანმა [ადამმა და მისმა შთამომავლობამ], — რადგან იგი [ადამიანი] უსამართლო და უმეცარია.
Wir haben das anvertraute Gut den Himmeln und der Erde und den Bergen angeboten, aber sie weigerten sich, es zu tragen, sie scheuten sich davor. Der Mensch trug es - wahrlich, er ist sehr oft ungerecht und sehr oft töricht.
Πράγματι, προσφέραμε [ως επιλογή και όχι εντολή] το καταπίστευμα (δηλ. τη θρησκεία και τις υποχρεωτικές πράξεις) στους ουρανούς, τη γη και τα βουνά (που αν θα το τηρούσαν, θα ανταμείβονταν, και αν το παραμελούσαν, θα τιμωρούνταν), αλλά εκείνοι [ως επιλογή τους] αρνήθηκαν να το αντέξουν και το φοβήθηκαν. Αλλά ο άνθρωπος το δέχτηκε, και είναι πράγματι άδικος (για τον εαυτό του) και αδαής (για τη συνέπεια της επιλογής του αν δεν την τηρούσε).
In verità abbiamo proposto l’Autonomia ai cieli, alla terra e ai monti, ma hanno rifiutato di accettarla e hanno avuto paura. Ma l’uomo l’ha accettata: in verità lui era ingiusto e ignorante –
72. Iš tiesų, Mes pasiūlėme Al-Amana (patikėjimą arba moralinę atsakomybę arba sąžiningumą ir visas pareigas, kurias Allahas įsakė) dangums ir žemei, ir kalnams, tačiau jie atsisakė nešti tai ir to bijojo (t. y. bijojo Allaho Kančios). Воистину, Мы предложили доверенное [Аллахом] небесам, земле и горам, но они отказались нести его и устрашились его, а человек понёс его. Ведь он, воистину, был несправедливым, невежественным.

Kwa hakika Sisi tuliwasilisha amana kwa mbingu na ardhi na milima, na vyote hivyo vikakataa kuichukua na vikaogopa. Lakini mwanadamu akaichukua. Hakika yeye amekuwa dhalimu, mjinga.
Vi erbjöd himlarna, jorden och bergen ansvarsbördan men de vägrade bära den, av rädsla. Människan däremot, i sin djupa orättfärdighet och okunskap, tog den på sig.
Biz emaneti göklere, yere ve dağlara sunduk. Onu taşımaktan kaçındılar, ondan korktular. Onu insan yüklendi. Doğrusu o çok zalim ve çok cahildir.
ہم نے اپنی امانت کو آسمانوں پر زمین پر اور پہاڑوں پر پیش کیا لیکن سب نے اس کے اٹھانے سے انکار کردیا اور اس سے ڈر گئے (مگر) انسان نے اسے اٹھا لیا[1] ، وه بڑا ہی ﻇالم جاہل ہے.

لِّيُعَذِّبَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ وَٱلْمُنَٰفِقَٰتِ وَٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَٱلْمُشْرِكَٰتِ وَيَتُوبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًۢا

The translators word this verse differently
God will punish the hypocrites, men and women, and the idolaters, men and women. And God will redeem the believers, men and women. God is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
So Allah punisheth hypocritical men and hypocritical women, and idolatrous men and idolatrous women. But Allah pardoneth believing men and believing women, and Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful
That God may torment the hypocritical men and hypocritical women, and the idolaters and idolatresses; and that God may turn relenting towards the believing men and believing women; verily, God is ever forgiving, merciful
Therefore will God punish the hypocritical men and the hypocritical women, and the men and the women who join gods with God; but to the believing men and women will God turn him: for God is Indulgent, Merciful

This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - vicegerent; vicar + earth; successor + earth; successors + earth; deputy + earth; substitute + earth; trust + heavens + earth; offered + trust. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 5 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 7:74; 7:129; 11:123; 35:43; 39:38. The reason for each was not recorded.
