Is he who worships devoutly during the watches of the night, prostrating himself and standing up, mindful of the Hereafter, and placing his hope in the mercy of his Lord? Say, "Are those who know and those who do not know equal?" Only those possessed of reason will remember.
Are those who know and those who don't equal in the Qur'an?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 39:9 Is he who payeth adoration in the watches of the night, prostrate and standing, bewaring of the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, (to be accounted equal with a disbeliever)? Say: ARE THOSE WHO KNOW EQUAL WITH THOSE WHO KNOW NOT? But only men of understanding will pay heed. In because it is the verse the question quotes, and because the comparison it actually makes is between a man at prayer at night and one who is not - knowledge is the term the verse ends on, not the one it begins with.
- 02 58:11 God will exalt those who believe among you, AND THOSE WHO HAVE KNOWLEDGE, TO HIGH RANKS. In because it is the only verse that assigns a rank on the basis of knowledge, and because it names believing and knowing as two things.
- 03 35:19–22 The blind man is not equal with the seer, nor is darkness equal with light, nor the shade with the sun's heat; nor are the living equal with the dead. In as ONE PASSAGE because the four comparisons are one sequence and the last of them is the sharpest. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about whether the dead know the living?, with a different reason there.
- 04 11:24 The similitude of the two parties is as the blind and the deaf and the seer and the hearer. ARE THEY EQUAL IN SIMILITUDE? Will ye not then be admonished? In because it puts the comparison as a question to the reader and doubles the senses - sight and hearing - rather than naming knowledge.
- 05 40:58 And the blind man and the seer are not equal, neither are those who believe and do good works (equal with) the evil-doer. LITTLE DO YE REFLECT. In because it closes on the reader's own failure to think, which is the recurring move in this set. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about repelling evil with good?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The question quotes a real sentence, and reading it in place changes its force.
39:9 does say ARE THOSE WHO KNOW EQUAL WITH THOSE WHO KNOW NOT? But look at what the verse compares before it gets there: a man who spends the watches of the night prostrate and standing, wary of the Hereafter and hoping for his Lord's mercy - against someone who does not. The knowing in that verse is not scholarship in the abstract; it arrives at the end of a description of a person at prayer in the dark.
58:11 is the clearest support for the plain reading: God will exalt to high ranks those who believe AND THOSE WHO HAVE KNOWLEDGE. Two categories, named separately.
The rest of the set is a family of similitudes that make the same move without the word knowledge at all. 35:19-22: the blind and the seer, darkness and light, shade and the sun's heat, the living and the dead. 11:24: the blind and deaf against the seer and hearer. 40:58: the blind and the seer, then the believer and the evil-doer - and it closes LITTLE DO YE REFLECT.
That closing is the pattern. These verses do not simply assert inequality; they put it as a question and then reproach the reader for not thinking. 39:9 ends BUT ONLY MEN OF UNDERSTANDING WILL PAY HEED.
One drop should be flagged rather than buried, and this study recommends restoring it: 12:76 says We exalt in degree whom We will, AND OVER EVERY LORD OF KNOWLEDGE THERE IS ONE MORE KNOWING. It is the most interesting sentence in the Qur'an on this subject and it was dropped only because its setting is a scene in Joseph's storehouse.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 39:9, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

When some adversity touches the human being, he prays to his Lord, repenting to Him.

Conspiracies are from Satan, that he may dishearten those who believe; but he will not harm them in the least, except by leave of God. So let the believers put their trust in God.
Lo! Conspiracy is only of the devil, that he may vex those who believe; but he can harm them not at all unless by Allah's leave. In Allah let believers put their trust
Privy talk is only from the devil, and those who do believe may grieve: it cannot hurt them at all, except by the permission of God: and upon God let the believers rely
Only of Satan is this clandestine talk, that he may bring the faithful to grief: but, unless by God's permission, not aught shall he harm them! in God then let the faithful trust
Verily the clandestine discourse of the infidels proceedeth from Satan, that he may grieve the true believers: But there shall be none to hurt them in the least, unless by the permission of God; wherefore in God let the faithful trust

Are you reluctant to offer charity before your conversation? If you do not do so, and God pardons you, then perform the prayer, and give alms, and obey God and His Messenger. God is Aware of what you do.
Fear ye to offer alms before your conference? Then, when ye do it not and Allah hath forgiven you, establish worship and pay the poor-due and obey Allah and His messenger. And Allah is Aware of what ye do
What! do ye shrink from giving in charity before addressing him? then if ye do it not, and God relents towards you, then be steadfast in prayer, and give alms, and fear God and His Apostle; for God is well aware of what ye do
Do ye hesitate to give alms previously to your private conference? Then if ye do it not (and God will excuse it in you), at least observe prayer, and pay the stated impost, and obey God and His Apostle: for God is cognisant of your actions
Do ye fear to give alms previously to your discoursing with the prophet, lest ye should impoverish yourselves? Therefore if ye do it not, and God is gracious unto you, by dispensing with the said precept for the future, be constant at prayer, and pay the legal alms; and obey God and his apostle in all other matters: For God well knoweth that which ye do

No burdened soul can carry the burden of another. Even if one weighted down calls for help with its burden, nothing can be lifted from it, even if they were related. You are to warn those who fear their Lord inwardly, and perform the prayer. He who purifies himself purifies himself for his own good. To God is the ultimate return.
And no burdened soul can bear another's burden, and if one heavy laden crieth for (help with) his load, naught of it will be lifted even though he (unto whom he crieth) be of kin. Thou warnest only those who fear their Lord in secret, and have established worship. He who groweth (in goodness), groweth only for himself, (he cannot by his merit redeem others). Unto Allah is the journeying
And no burdened soul shall bear the burden of another; and if a heavily laden one shall call for its load (to be carried) it shall not be carried for it at all, even though it be a kinsman!- thou canst only warn those who fear their Lord in the unseen and who are steadfast in prayer; and he who is pure is only pure for himself; and unto God the journey is
And the burdened soul shall not bear the burden of another: and if the heavy laden soul cry out for its burden to be carried, yet shall not aught of it be carried, even by the near of kin! Thou shalt warn those who fear their Lord in secret, and observe prayer. And whoever shall keep himself pure, he purifieth himself to his own behoof: for unto God shall be the final gathering
A burdened soul shall not bear the burden of another: And if a heavy-burdened soul call on another to bear part of its burden, no part thereof shall be born by the person who shall be called on, although he be ever so nearly related. Thou shalt admonish those who fear their Lord in secret, and are constant at prayer: And whoever cleanseth himself from the guilt of disobedience cleanseth himself to the advantage of his own soul; for all shall be assembled before God at the last day

Those who dispute regarding God's revelations without any authority having come to them-there is nothing in their hearts but the feeling of greatness, which they will never attain. So seek refuge in God; for He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
Lo! those who wrangle concerning the revelations of Allah without a warrant having come unto them, there is naught else in their breasts save pride which they will never attain. So take thou refuge in Allah. Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Seer
Verily, those who wrangle concerning the signs of God without authority having come to them, there is naught in their breasts but pride; but they shall not attain it: do thou then seek refuge in God; verily, He both hears and looks
As to those who cavil at the signs of God without authority having reached them, nought is there but pride in their breasts: but they shall not succeed. Fly thou for refuge then to God, for He is the Hearer, the Beholder
As to those who impugn the signs of God, without any convincing proof which hath been revealed unto them, there is nothing but pride in their breasts; but they shall not attain their desire: Wherefore fly for refuge unto God; for it is He who heareth and seeth

Surely the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of man: but most men know it not
Greater surely than the creation of man is the creation of the heavens and of the earth: but most men know it not

Your Lord has said, "Pray to Me, and I will respond to you. But those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell forcibly."
And your Lord hath said: Pray unto Me and I will hear your prayer. Lo! those who scorn My service, they will enter hell, disgraced
And your Lord said, 'Call upon me, I will answer you; verily, those who are too big with pride to worship shall enter into hell, shrinking up
And your Lord saith, "Call upon me - I will hearken unto you: but they who turn in disdain from my service shall enter Hell with shame

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 39:9, 58:11, 35:19-22, 11:24, 40:58, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - those + who + know + those + who + know + not; equal + know; knowledge + degrees; blind + seeing + equal. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 8 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:184 - the fasting rule; matched incidentally; 6:50 - on-topic - it ends 'is the blind man equal to the seer?' - but the verse's subject is the Prophet's limits; 12:21 - the Joseph narrative; 12:76 - an extraordinary verse for this subject, not carried only because its setting is the search of the brothers' bags; 13:16 - near-identical to 35:19-22; 16:75 - a similitude about ownership; 27:61 - carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the mountains as 'pegs'? and What does the Qur'an say about the barrier between two seas?; 39:29 - a similitude about divided loyalty.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
