What does the Qur'an say about debt and giving time to repay?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:280 AND IF THE DEBTOR IS IN STRAITENED CIRCUMSTANCES, THEN (LET THERE BE) POSTPONEMENT TO (THE TIME OF) EASE. AND THAT YE REMIT THE DEBT AS ALMSGIVING WOULD BE BETTER FOR YOU, IF YE DID BUT KNOW. In because it is the whole of the Qur'an's instruction on this - a mandatory extension and a recommended cancellation - and it stands immediately after the riba verses.
  2. 02 2:282 When ye contract a debt for a fixed term, record it in writing... And be not averse to writing it down, be it small or great, WITH ITS TERM. In because the term is part of the contract from the start, which is what makes 2:280's postponement a variation rather than a default. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about writing down debts and contracts?, with a different reason there.
  3. 03 9:60 The alms are only for the poor and the needy... and to free the captives, AND THE DEBTORS. In because debtors are a named category of zakat recipient, which makes relief of debt a community obligation rather than a private kindness. ALSO CARRIED by What routes out of slavery does the Qur'an open?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

One verse carries this, and it is placed where it is on purpose.

2:280 comes immediately after the Qur'an's severest passage on usury. Having condemned taking increase from a debt, the text turns to the debtor who cannot pay: IF THE DEBTOR IS IN STRAITENED CIRCUMSTANCES, THEN (LET THERE BE) POSTPONEMENT TO (THE TIME OF) EASE.

Two things about that. The postponement is stated as an instruction, not a suggestion - and it has no fixed period. The term is the debtor's return to ease, whenever that is.

Then the second half, which goes further: AND THAT YE REMIT THE DEBT AS ALMSGIVING WOULD BE BETTER FOR YOU, IF YE DID BUT KNOW. Writing the debt off is reclassified as charity and recommended, with the benefit assigned to the creditor.

9:60 removes this from the realm of private generosity. Among the eight categories the alms are for, one is DEBTORS. Relief of the indebted is a standing charge on the community's funds.

2:282 is carried because it fixes the baseline the postponement varies from: a debt is contracted FOR A FIXED TERM and written down WITH ITS TERM. The Qur'an expects debts to be documented and dated - and then expects the date to yield to the debtor's circumstances.

The study Does the Qur'an forbid interest (riba)? carries the material on increase. Taken as a pair, the two describe a system in which the lender may not profit from the loan and must extend or forgive it when the borrower cannot pay.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:280, widening across 3 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation

3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Talal Itani2012 O you who believe! When you incur debt among yourselves for a certain period of time, write it down. And have a scribe write in your presence, in all fairness. And let no scribe refuse to write, as God has taught him. So let him write, and let the debtor dictate. And let him fear God, his Lord, and diminish nothing from it. But if the debtor is mentally deficient, or weak, or unable to dictate, then let his guardian dictate with honesty. And call to witness two men from among you. If two men are not available, then one man and two women whose testimony is acceptable to all-if one of them fails to remember, the other would remind her. Witnesses must not refuse when called upon. And do not think it too trivial to write down, whether small or large, including the time of repayment. That is more equitable with God, and stronger as evidence, and more likely to prevent doubt-except in the case of a spot transaction between you-then there is no blame on you if you do not write it down. And let there be witnesses whenever you conclude a contract, and let no harm be done to either scribe or witness. If you do that, it is corruption on your part. And fear God. God teaches you. God is aware of everything.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 O ye who believe! When ye contract a debt for a fixed term, record it in writing. Let a scribe record it in writing between you in (terms of) equity. No scribe should refuse to write as Allah hath taught him, so let him write, and let him who incurreth the debt dictate, and let him observe his duty to Allah his Lord, and diminish naught thereof. But if he who oweth the debt is of low understanding, or weak, or unable himself to dictate, then let the guardian of his interests dictate in (terms of) equity. And call to witness, from among your men, two witnesses. And if two men be not (at hand) then a man and two women, of such as ye approve as witnesses, so that if the one erreth (through forgetfulness) the other will remember. And the witnesses must not refuse when they are summoned. Be not averse to writing down (the contract) whether it be small or great, with (record of) the term thereof. That is more equitable in the sight of Allah and more sure for testimony, and the best way of avoiding doubt between you; save only in the case when it is actual merchandise which ye transfer among yourselves from hand to hand. In that case it is no sin for you if ye write it not. And have witnesses when ye sell one to another, and let no harm be done to scribe or witness. If ye do (harm to them) lo! it is a sin in you. Observe your duty to Allah. Allah is teaching you. And Allah is knower of all things

Edward Henry Palmer1880 O ye who believe! if ye engage to one another in a debt for a stated time, then write it down, and let a scribe write it down between you faithfully; nor let a scribe refuse to write as God taught him, but let him write, and let him who owes dictate; but let him fear God his Lord, and not diminish therefrom aught; but if he who owes be a fool, or weak, or cannot dictate himself, then let his agent dictate faithfully, and let them call two witnesses out from amongst their men; or if there be not two men, then a man and two women, from those whom he chooses for witnesses, so that if one of the two should err, the second of the two may remind the other; and let not the witnesses refuse when they are summoned; and let them not tire of writing it, be it small or great, with its time of payment. That is more just in the sight of God, and more upright for testimony, and brings you nearer to not doubting. Unless, indeed, it be a ready-money transaction between you, which ye arrange between yourselves, then it is no crime against you that ye do not write it down; but bring witnesses to what ye sell one to another, and let not either scribe or witness come to harm, for if ye do it will be abomination in you; but fear God, for God teaches you, and God knows all things

John Medows Rodwell1861 O ye who believe! when ye contract a debt (payable) at a fixed date, write it down, and let the notary faithfully note between you: and let not the notary refuse to note, even as God hath taught him; but let him note it down, and let him who oweth the debt dictate, and let him fear God his Lord, and not diminish aught thereof. But if he who oweth the debt be foolish or weak, or be not able to dictate himself, let his friend dictate for him with fairness; and call to witness two witnesses of your people: but if there be not two men, let there be a man, and two women of those whom ye shall judge fit for witnesses: if the one of them should mistake, the other may cause her to recollect. And the witnesses shall not refuse, whenever they shall be summoned. And disdain not to put the debt in writing, be it large or small, with its time of payment: this will be more just for you in the sight of God, better suited for witnessing, and the best for avoiding doubt. But if the goods be there present, and ye pass them from hand to hand - then it shall be no fault in you not to write it down. And have witnesses when ye sell, and harm not writer or witness: it will be a crime in you to do this. But fear God and God will give you knowledge, for God hath knowledge of all things

George Sale1734 O true believers, when ye bind yourselves one to the other in a debt for a certain time, write it down; and let a writer write between you according to justice, and let not the writer refuse writing according to what God hath taught him; but let him write, and let him who oweth the debt dictate, and let him fear God his Lord, and not diminish ought thereof. But if he who oweth the debt be foolish, or weak, or be not able to dictate himself, let his agent dictate according to equity; and call to witness two witnesses of your neighbouring men; but if there be not two men, let there be a man and two women of those whom ye shall choose for witnesses: If one of those women should mistake, the other of them will cause her to recollect. And the witnesses shall not refuse, whensoever they shall be called. And disdain not to write it down, be it a large debt, or be it a small one, until its time of payment: This will be more just in the sight of God, and more right for bearing witness, and more easy, that ye may not doubt. But if it be a present bargain which ye transact between your selves, it shall be no crime in you, if ye write it not down. And take witnesses when ye sell one to the other, and let no harm be done to the writer, nor to the witness; which if ye do, it will surely be injustice in you: And fear God, and God will instruct you, for God knoweth all things

O you who believe!

O ye who believe! The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

Neka on piše, a neka mu kazuje dužnik! Allah sve dobro zna.

Enyi mlioamini! Mnapodaiana deni hadi muda maalumu, basi liandikeni.

Allah’tan korkun. Allah (bunları) size öğretmektedir. Allah her şeyi bilendir.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Say: A hearer of good for you, who believeth in Allah and is true to the believers, and a mercy for such of you as believe. Those who vex the messenger of Allah, for them there is a painful doom

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And of them are some who are by the ears with the prophet, and say, 'He is all ear.' Say, 'An ear of good for you!' he believes in God, and believes in those who do believe, and is a mercy unto such of you as believe; but those who are by the ears with the Apostle of God, for them is grievous woe

John Medows Rodwell1861 There are some of them who injure the Prophet and say, "He is all ear." Say: An ear of good to you! He believeth in God, and believeth the believers: and is a mercy to such of you as believe: But they who injure the Apostle of God, shall suffer a dolorous chastisement

George Sale1734 There are some of them who injure the prophet, and say, he is an ear: Answer, he is an ear of good unto you; he believeth in God, and giveth credit to the faithful, and is a mercy unto such of you who believe. But they who injure the apostle of God, shall suffer a painful punishment

9:62

Talal Itani2012 They swear to you by God to please you. But it is more proper for them to please God and His Messenger, if they are believers.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 They swear by Allah to you (Muslims) to please you, but Allah, with His messenger, hath more right that they should please Him if they are believers

Edward Henry Palmer1880 They swear by God to please you; but God and His Apostle are more worthy for them to please if they be believers

John Medows Rodwell1861 They swear to you by God to please you; but worthier is God, and His Apostle, that they should please Him, if they are believers

George Sale1734 They swear unto you by God, that they may please you; but it is more just that they should please God and his apostle, if they are true believers

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it7 of the 8 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four translations available when this study was first written - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:280, 2:282, 9:60, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.

The basis this restatement was written over. This study was first signed on 6 September 2026, over four English translations. Itani 2012 became available to it on 7 September 2026. On 9 September 2026 this study was read against his translation at every verse it carries, and no finding in it is withdrawn: 2:280 gives a postponement with no fixed period and a recommended remission whose benefit is assigned to the creditor in all five, 9:60 lists eight categories with debtors among them in all five, and 2:282 fixes the documented term in all five. Itani is read as a fifth translation and is nowhere treated as the reading that settles a word.

What the fifth translation adds. Itani reads 2:280's deferment as a bare noun phrase - then deferment until a time of ease - where Palmer, Rodwell and Sale give it as an imperative and Pickthall supplies one in parentheses. Every translation carries the obligation; they differ in how plainly they mark it as a command. A quotation is also corrected here, as a matter of fidelity rather than a finding: the version first signed quoted Pickthall at 2:280 as THEN POSTPONEMENT TO THE TIME OF EASE. He wrote then (let there be) postponement to (the time of) ease, and the parentheses are his - they mark words he SUPPLIED. The markers are restored in the answer above and in the reason given for 2:280. The subject is restored with them. The version first signed opened that quotation IF HE IS IN STRAITENED CIRCUMSTANCES; Pickthall writes if the debtor is. No translation reads as that quotation did - he is Itani's subject and straitened circumstances is Pickthall's phrase, so the sentence was a composite of two sources rather than a quotation of either. It now reads IF THE DEBTOR IS IN STRAITENED CIRCUMSTANCES, which is Pickthall verbatim. The finding does not rest on the pronoun: the sentence names the debtor immediately before the quotation, and every translation identifies him - the debtor in Pickthall, an debtor in Sale, any one find difficulty in discharging a debt in Rodwell, one in difficulties in Palmer, he in Itani.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - in + difficulty + respite; let + him + have + ease; remit + it + as + almsgiving; straitened + circumstances + postponement. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set. The search has not been run again over five translations, so the verses are exactly those of the version signed on 6 September 2026: none was added and none was removed.

What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:196 - pilgrimage procedure; matched on the ease/difficulty language.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them. No figure for how far they differ is quoted here.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

al-Tabari

A scholar who wrote Jami' al-bayan, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 923 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.
