This is the Book in which there is no doubt, a guide for the righteous.
What does the Qur'an say about believing in the unseen (al-ghayb)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:2–3 This is the Scripture whereof there is no doubt, a guidance unto those who ward off (evil) - WHO BELIEVE IN THE UNSEEN, and establish worship, and spend of that We have bestowed upon them. In as ONE PASSAGE because belief in the unseen is the FIRST item in the book's opening description of its own audience, and 2:2 is needed to show that.
- 02 6:59 And with Him are THE KEYS OF THE INVISIBLE; none but He knoweth them. He knoweth what is in the land and the sea. Not a leaf falleth but He knoweth it, nor a grain in the darkness of the earth. In because it is the fullest statement, and because the examples given are deliberately small and ordinary.
- 03 7:188 Say: for myself I have no power to benefit nor to hurt, save that which God willeth. HAD I KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNSEEN I SHOULD HAVE ABUNDANCE OF WEALTH, and adversity would not touch me. In because it is the Prophet instructed to DENY having this knowledge, and because the argument offered is almost comically practical.
- 04 3:179 It is not God's purpose to let you know the unseen; but God chooseth of His messengers whom He will. In because it states both the general withholding and the named exception in one sentence.
- 05 72:26–27 (He is) the Knower of the Unseen, and He revealeth unto none His secret, SAVE UNTO EVERY MESSENGER WHOM HE HATH CHOSEN. In as ONE PASSAGE because the exception is the whole content and is in the second verse.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Belief in the unseen is the FIRST thing the Qur'an says about the people it is addressed to. 2:2-3 opens the book proper - this is the Scripture, a guidance for those who ward off evil - and the first item on the list is not prayer or charity but believing in what cannot be seen. Prayer comes second, spending third.
6:59 is the fullest description of what the unseen covers, and its examples are the striking part. With Him are THE KEYS OF THE INVISIBLE - and then, instead of cosmic mysteries, a falling leaf and a grain in the dark of the earth. The category is defined downward, toward the ordinary and unnoticed, not upward.
The verses that matter most for a reader's expectations are the two that RESTRICT it. 3:179 says it is not God's purpose to let you know the unseen - and then names an exception, messengers whom He chooses. 72:26-27 says the same: He reveals His secret to none, save to a messenger He has chosen.
And 7:188 is the Prophet himself, instructed to say he does not have it, with an argument no one would invent: HAD I KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNSEEN I SHOULD HAVE ABUNDANCE OF WEALTH, and no harm would touch me. The denial is made practical and slightly wry.
Eleven verses were dropped and they share one shape: the phrase KNOWER OF THE INVISIBLE AND THE VISIBLE used as an epithet at the close of a passage about something else. It is one of the commonest divine titles in the book, and counting every occurrence would have produced a long study saying one thing. The claims about knowing the future made for and by others - fortune-telling, the jinn's knowledge - are taken up by the studies What does the Qur'an say about fortune-telling and soothsayers?, Can the jinn know the future, according to the Qur'an? and What does the Qur'an say about the jinn? rather than here.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:2–3, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

It is not (the purpose) of Allah to leave you in your present state till He shall separate the wicked from the good. And it is not (the purpose of) Allah to let you know the Unseen. But Allah chooseth of His messengers whom He will, (to receive knowledge thereof). So believe in Allah and His messengers. If ye believe and ward off (evil), yours will be a vast reward

72:27 Isipokuwa Mtume wake aliyemridhia. Naye huyo humwekea walinzi mbele yake na nyuma yake.
72:26 Han är den som fullt känner det fördolda och han låter ingen få insyn i det,

Until, when they see what they were promised, they will know who is weaker in helpers, and fewer in numbers.
Till (the day) when they shall behold that which they are promised (they may doubt); but then they will know (for certain) who is weaker in allies and less in multitude
Until when they see what they are threatened with, then shall they surely know who is most weak at helping and fewest in numbers
Until they see their threatened vengeance they will be perverse! but then shall they know which side was the weakest in a protector and the fewest in number
Until they see the vengeance with which they are threatened, they will not cease their opposition: But then shall they know who were the weaker in a protector, and the fewer in number

لِّيَعْلَمَ أَن قَدْ أَبْلَغُوا۟ رِسَٰلَٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عَدَدًۢا

That He may know that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord. He encompasses what they have, and has tallied everything by number.
That He may know that they have indeed conveyed the messages of their Lord. He surroundeth all their doings, and He keepeth count of all things
That He may know that they have delivered the errands of their Lord, for He compasses what they have, and reckons everything by number
That He may know if his Apostles have verily delivered the messages of their Lord: and He embraceth in his knowledge all their ways, and taketh count of all that concerneth them
that He may know that they have executed the commissions of their Lord: He comprehendeth whatever is with them; and counteth all things by number
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:2-3, 6:59, 7:188, 3:179, 72:26-27, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - believe + unseen; keys + unseen; knower + unseen; knoweth + unseen + witnessed. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 11 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 5:109 - the messengers' answer at the gathering; on-topic but the subject is the questioning; 5:116 - Jesus' reply, a striking statement of the asymmetry; 6:73 - an epithet in a passage about creation; 9:78 - an epithet closing a passage about hypocrites; 9:94 - the subject is excuses; 10:20 - a reply to a demand for a portent; near-identical in force to 7:188; 13:9 - epithet; 23:92 - epithet; 32:6 - epithet; 34:3 - epithet; also left out of What does the Qur'an say about the signs of the Last Hour?; 34:48 - epithet.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
