God does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives anything less than that to whomever He wills. Whoever associates anything with God has devised a monstrous sin.
Does God forgive all sins?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:48 States the exception, and states it as the one thing not forgiven: God pardons not that a partner be ascribed to Him, and pardons anything short of that to whom He pleases. In because without it the study answers its own question falsely by omission.
- 02 4:110 Whoever does evil or wrongs his own soul and then asks pardon will find God forgiving and merciful. In because it is the frame's statement of the ordinary case - the asking, and what is found.
- 03 4:116 Repeats 4:48 almost word for word. In because the repetition is itself the finding, and because it is the highest-divergence verse in the frame at 0.80.
- 04 39:53 Say to my servants who have transgressed against their own souls, despair not: God forgives all sins. The verse the question quotes, and the one an all-four word search missed. THIS VERSE IS ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about not despairing of God's mercy?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The two halves of the answer are both in the text, and they are not reconciled here.
39:53 is as wide as it sounds: say to my servants who have transgressed against their own souls, despair not of the mercy of God - He forgives all sins. Palmer renders it God forgives sins, all of them. Nothing in the verse narrows it.
4:48 and 4:116 state one exception, and state it twice in nearly the same words: God does not pardon that a partner be ascribed to Him, and pardons anything short of that to whom He pleases. The repetition is itself part of the record - the same statement is made twice, a surah apart.
Between them stands 4:110, which is the ordinary case: whoever does evil or wrongs his own soul, and then asks pardon, will find God forgiving and merciful.
So what these four verses give is a very wide statement and a named limit, and the study does not resolve them into one sentence. Whether all sins in 39:53 is spoken to those who turn, and how the two are held together, is exactly the work of the interpretation layer - named commentators, quoted and disputable - and no has cleared the rights audit. Note also that 4:116 is the most divergent verse in this set at 0.80, which is a fair warning about how much the English is carrying.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:48, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Lo! Allah forgiveth not that a partner should be ascribed unto Him. He forgiveth (all) save that to whom He will. Whoso ascribeth partners to Allah, he hath indeed invented a tremendous sin
Verily, God pardons not associating aught with Him, but He pardons anything short of that to whomsoever He pleases; but he who associates aught with God, he hath devised a mighty sin
Verily, God will not forgive the union of other gods with Himself! But other than this will forgive to whom He pleaseth. And He who uniteth gods with God hath devised a great wickedness
Surely God will not pardon the giving Him an equal; but will pardon any other sin, except that, to whom He pleaseth: And whoso giveth a companion unto God, hath devised a great wickedness

Among the Jews are some who take words out of context, and say, "We hear and we disobey", and "Hear without listening", and "Observe us," twisting with their tongues and slandering the religion. Had they said, "We hear and we obey", and "Listen", and "Give us your attention," it would have been better for them, and more upright. But God has cursed them for their disbelief; they do not believe except a little.
Some of those who are Jews change words from their context and say: "We hear and disobey; hear thou as one who heareth not" and "Listen to us!" distorting with their tongues and slandering religion. Among the Jews are those who displace the words of their Scriptures, and say, "We have heard, and we have not obeyed. Of the Jews there are some who pervert words from their places; and say, we have heard, and have disobeyed; and do thou hear without understanding our meaning, and look upon us: Perplexing with their tongues, and reviling the true religion. But if they had said, we have heard, and do obey; and do thou hear, and regard us: Certainly it were better for them, and more right. There you are, arguing on their behalf in the present life, but who will argue with God on their behalf on the Day of Resurrection? Or who will be their representative?
Ho! ye are they who pleaded for them in the life of the world. But who will plead with Allah for them on the Day of Resurrection, or who will then be their defender
Here are ye, wrangling for them about this world's life;- but who shall wrangle with God for them on the day of judgment, or who shall be a guardian over them

God will not forgive that partners be associated with Him; but will forgive anything less than that, to whomever He wills. Anyone who ascribes partners to God has strayed into far error.

Lo! Allah pardoneth not that partners should be ascribed unto Him. He pardoneth all save that to whom He will. Whoso ascribeth partners unto Allah hath wandered far astray
Verily, God forgives not associating aught with Him, but He pardons anything short of that, to whomsoever He will; but whoso associates aught with God, he hath erred a wide error
God truly will not forgive the joining other gods with Himself. Other sins He will forgive to whom He will: but he who joineth gods with God, hath erred with far-gone error

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four translations that had cleared when this study was written - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:48, 4:110, 4:116, 39:53, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
The basis this restatement was written over. This study was signed on 5 September 2026, when four English renderings had cleared. Itani 2012 cleared on 7 September 2026, and five have cleared since. The verse selection, the reading and every finding here are the work done over those four; the divergence figures below are the live measure, computed over all five. Nothing here has been re-read against Itani, and no finding claims his agreement.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set is the Editor's anchor frame, not a search result. A word search had qualified twenty-nine verses and missed every verse in this study, because its probes used the plural sins where the decisive verses say sin. One verse here, 39:53, is also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about not despairing of God's mercy? with a different reason. Why each passage is in the study is stated per passage, and is signed with this prose.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. The derived divergence measure is computed over all five cleared renderings, Itani included, and is restated here so that this page and every verse page report the same measure. Across this set it runs from band 1 at 39:53 (0.52), where the five stand closest, to band 5 at 4:116 (0.78), where they stand furthest apart. The version signed when four translations were cleared gave band 1 at 39:53 (0.51) and band 5 at 4:116 (0.80); the two endpoint verses are unchanged, the figures are not. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
