Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves: do not despair of God's mercy, for God forgives all sins. He is indeed the Forgiver, the Clement."
What does the Qur'an say about turning to God after wrong rather than despairing?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 39:53–54 Say: O My servants who have transgressed against their own souls, DESPAIR NOT OF THE MERCY OF GOD; He forgiveth all sins. TURN UNTO YOUR LORD REPENTANT, and surrender unto Him, before there come unto you the doom, when ye cannot be helped. In as ONE PASSAGE because 39:53 is the despair clause and 39:54 is the instruction that follows from it - and the two are almost never quoted together. 39:53 IS ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about not despairing of God's mercy? and by the study Does God forgive all sins?, each with a different reason.
- 02 66:8 O ye who believe, TURN UNTO GOD IN SINCERE REPENTANCE. It may be that your Lord will remit from you your evil deeds and bring you into gardens underneath which rivers flow. In because it is the only verse that qualifies the turning with a word the translators render sincere or unswerving, and because what follows is 'it may be' rather than a guarantee.
- 03 11:3 And: ASK PARDON OF YOUR LORD AND TURN TO HIM REPENTANT. He will cause you to enjoy a fair estate until a time appointed. In because it puts the turning before the asking in the order of the sentence and attaches a worldly consequence.
- 04 11:90 Ask pardon of your Lord and then turn unto Him repentant. LO, MY LORD IS MERCIFUL, LOVING. In because the two attributes named at the end are mercy and LOVE, which is rare, and because it is Shu'ayb speaking to people who have just threatened him.
- 05 17:25 Your Lord is best aware of what is in your minds. If ye are righteous, then lo, HE WAS EVER FORGIVING UNTO THOSE WHO TURN unto Him. In because it makes the turning, not the record, the thing God responds to.
- 06 42:25 And He it is Who ACCEPTETH REPENTANCE FROM HIS BONDMEN, and pardoneth the evil deeds, and knoweth what ye do. In because it states the acceptance as a settled characteristic rather than an event.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The passage this question is really about is 39:53-54, and the two verses are almost never read together.
39:53 is the sentence people know: O MY SERVANTS WHO HAVE TRANSGRESSED AGAINST THEIR OWN SOULS, DESPAIR NOT OF THE MERCY OF GOD; HE FORGIVETH ALL SINS. It is the widest statement of mercy in the book.
39:54 is what comes next, in the same breath: TURN UNTO YOUR LORD REPENTANT, AND SURRENDER UNTO HIM, BEFORE THERE COME UNTO YOU THE DOOM. The verse that forbids despair is immediately followed by an instruction and a deadline. Neither half is the whole thought, and quoting either alone changes it.
The rest of the set is consistent about the order of operations, and it is not the order a guilty person expects. 11:3 and 11:90 both say ASK PARDON, AND THEN TURN. 17:25 says God is forgiving TO THOSE WHO TURN - the turning, not the record, is what is answered. 42:25 makes the acceptance a standing characteristic.
66:8 adds the one qualification: the turning is to be SINCERE - and then, remarkably, does not guarantee the outcome. IT MAY BE that your Lord will remit your evil deeds. The verse asks for sincerity and declines to promise.
And 11:90 ends with two attributes together that the Qur'an rarely pairs: MERCIFUL, LOVING - spoken by a prophet to people who had just threatened to stone him.
The wider reach of forgiveness is carried by the study Does God forgive all sins?, and forgiving yourself by What does the Qur'an say about guilt and forgiving yourself? The study What does the Qur'an say about sincere repentance (tawba)? takes up repentance itself, and the studies What does the Qur'an say about God accepting repentance again and again? and What does the Qur'an say about God loving those who repent? take up God's acceptance of it and His love for those who repent.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 39:53–54, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Perhaps your Lord will remit your sins, and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow, on the Day when God will not disappoint the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light streaming before them, and to their right, they will say, "Our Lord, complete our light for us, and forgive us; You are capable of all things."

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 39:53-54, 66:8, 11:3, 11:90, 17:25, 42:25, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - turn + unto + god + repentance + sincere; turn + unto + your + lord; repent + thereafter + amend; ask + forgiveness + then + turn. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 12 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:177 - carried by two studies already; 6:54 - on-topic and strong; not carried only because the passage's subject is how to greet believers; 6:157 - revelation; 7:29 - worship; 11:52 - near-identical to 11:3 and 11:90, both kept; 11:57 - 'turn away', the opposite sense; 11:61 - near-identical; 11:88 - Shu'ayb's preamble; 40:7 - intercessory prayer by angels - closer to intercession; 40:60 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about crying out to God in distress?; 42:10 - matched incidentally; 110:3 - the closing instruction of the last revealed surah; the subject is victory.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
