And do not be saddened by those who rush into disbelief. They will not harm God in the least. God desires to give them no share in the Hereafter. A terrible torment awaits them.
What does the Qur'an say about grief and loss?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 3:176 The Prophet is told not to let the conduct of those who run to disbelief grieve him, and the reason given is about God's power rather than about the grief.
- 02 9:92 Men turn away with their eyes overflowing because they could not be equipped. In because the grief is described and not rebuked.
- 03 10:65 The Prophet is again told not to let their speech grieve him. Included as the second of the two such verses rather than as a separate claim.
- 04 12:84 Jacob turns away, says how he grieves for Joseph, and his eyes whiten with a sorrow he keeps in. The longest sustained grief in the set.
- 05 28:8 Pharaoh's household takes up the child who is to become an enemy and a grief to them. BORDERLINE - see the note on this study.
- 06 35:34 People give praise for grief being put away from them. In because it assumes the grief was carried.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
These renderings do not treat grief as a fault. Jacob turns away and says how he grieves for Joseph, and his eyes whiten with a sorrow he keeps in (12:84). Men who could not be equipped for an expedition turn back with their eyes overflowing (9:92). Neither is rebuked.
Twice the Prophet is told not to let something grieve him - the conduct of those who run to disbelief (3:176) and their speech (10:65) - and in both the reason given is about God's power, not about the feeling being wrong. And 35:34 has people in the end praising God for putting grief away from them, which assumes they carried it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: no source has cleared the rights audit. It does not report how any commentator has read them: no has cleared it either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no cleared English edition exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading, because that layer is not built. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 3:176, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Let not their conduct grieve thee, who run easily to disbelief, for lo! they injure Allah not at all. It is Allah's Will to assign them no portion in the Hereafter, and theirs will be an awful doom
Let them not grieve thee who vie with each other in misbelief. Verily, they cannot hurt God at all. God wills not to make for them a portion in the future life; but for them is mighty woe
Let not those who vie in haste after infidelity grieve thee: Verily not one whit shall they injure God! God will refuse them all part in the life to come: a severe chastisement shall be their lot
They shall not grieve thee, who emulously hasten unto infidelity; for they shall never hurt God at all. God will not give them a part in the next life, and they shall suffer a great punishment

Then they retired in favour from God and grace; no evil touched them; they followed the pleasure of God, and God is Lord of mighty grace
They returned, therefore, with the favour of God, enriched by Him, and untouched by harm; and they followed what was well pleasing to God. And God is of great Munificence

There is no blame on the weak, nor on the sick, nor on those who have nothing to give, provided they are true to God and His Messenger. In no way can the righteous be blamed. God is Forgiving and Merciful.
Not unto the weak nor unto the sick nor unto those who can find naught to spend is any fault (to be imputed though they stay at home) if they are true to Allah and His messenger. Not unto the good is there any road (of blame). Allah is Forgiving, Merciful
For the weak, and the sick, and those who cannot find wherewith to expend in alms there is no hindrance, so they be only sincere towards God and His Apostle. There is no way against those who do well; for God is forgiving and merciful
It shall be no crime in the weak, and in the sick, and in those who find not the means of contributing, to stay at home, provided they are sincere with God and His Apostle. Against those who act virtuously, there is no cause of blame: and God is Gracious, Merciful
In those who are weak, or are afflicted with sickness, or in those who find not wherewith to contribute to the war, it shall be no crime if they stay at home; provided they behave themselves faithfully towards God and his apostle. But blame is on those who ask you for exemption, although they are rich. They are content to be with those who stay behind. God has sealed their hearts, so they do not know.
The road (of blame) is only against those who ask for leave of thee (to stay at home) when they are rich. They are content to be with the useless. Allah hath sealed their hearts so that they know not
Only is there a way against those who ask thee for leave, to stay at home while they are rich; content to be with those who are left behind; on whose hearts God has set a stamp, so that they should not know

No , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography was consulted, because none has cleared the rights audit. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set began as a word search over the four public-domain renderings, run in mushaf order with no relevance ordering, and was then confirmed by the Editor. Why each verse is in the study is stated per verse in the selection, and is signed with this prose.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
