As for those who are miserable, they will be in the Fire. They will have therein sighing and wailing.
Does the Qur'an say anyone leaves hell, or is it eternal?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 11:106–108 As for those who will be wretched, they will be in the Fire, sighing and wailing, ABIDING THERE SO LONG AS THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH ENDURE, SAVE FOR THAT WHICH THY LORD WILLETH; thy Lord is Doer of what He will. And as for those who will be glad, they will be in the Garden, abiding so long as the heavens and the earth endure, save for that which thy Lord willeth: a gift unfailing. In as ONE PASSAGE because the exception clause appears in BOTH halves - for the Fire and for the Garden - and reading either half alone destroys the symmetry that is the passage's most important feature.
- 02 6:128 Fire is your home; abide therein for ever, SAVE HIM WHOM GOD WILLETH. Lo, thy Lord is Wise, Aware. In because it states eternity and an exception in the same clause. DUAL-PLACED: the study What does the Qur'an say about the jinn? carries this verse with a different reason.
- 03 43:74–75 Lo, the guilty are immortal in hell's torment. It is not relaxed for them, and they despair therein. In because it is the strongest statement on the other side - immortal, unrelaxed, and without hope - and it carries no exception clause at all.
- 04 78:23 They will abide therein FOR AGES. In because the word is a term of duration rather than of endlessness, and because the four translators differ over whether it implies an end. ALSO CARRIED by How does the Qur'an describe hell? inside the 78:21-30 range, with a different reason there.
- 05 2:167 Thus will God show them their own deeds as anguish for them, and THEY WILL NOT EMERGE FROM THE FIRE. In because it is a flat denial of exit, stated without qualification.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an says both things, and this study does not resolve them into one.
On one side: 43:74-75 says the guilty are immortal in the torment, that it is not relaxed for them, and that they despair there. 2:167 says flatly that they will not emerge from the Fire. Neither verse carries any qualification.
On the other side: 11:107 says they abide so long as the heavens and the earth endure - SAVE FOR THAT WHICH THY LORD WILLETH. 6:128 says abide therein for ever - SAVE HIM WHOM GOD WILLETH. The exception is explicit in both, and in both it is left entirely open.
The most important thing in this frame is easy to miss, and it is why 11:106-108 is carried as a range rather than as a single verse. The exception clause appears in BOTH halves of the passage. The Fire is described with save what thy Lord wills - and so is the Garden, three words later. Whatever the clause is doing, it is not doing it only to hell. Any reading that treats it as a loophole for the damned has to explain why the same words attach to the blessed, whose portion the passage then calls a gift unfailing.
78:23 adds a third kind of difficulty, this time lexical. The word rendered for ages carries a sense of long successive periods, and translators have divided over whether a succession of ages implies an end. Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall do not agree on the force of it.
So the honest report is: the text asserts permanence, states an exception to it twice in explicit terms, and uses at least one duration word whose scope is disputed. It does not reconcile them.
Doing that reconciling is exactly the work of the interpretation layer - and it is a live dispute within the tradition, not a modern invention. No has cleared the rights audit, so the commentators who argued it cannot be quoted here. That is an absence with a named cause.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 11:106–108, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

As for those who will be wretched (on that day) they will be in the Fire; sighing and wailing will be their portion therein
And as for those who are wretched - why, in the Fire! there shall they groan and sob! to dwell therein for aye
And as for those who shall be consigned to misery - their place the Fire! therein shall they sigh and bemoan them
And they who shall be miserable, shall be thrown into hell fire; there shall they wail and bemoan themselves

So be not in doubt regarding what these people worship. They worship only as their ancestors worshiped before. We will pay them their due in full, without any reduction.
So be not thou in doubt concerning that which these (folk) worship. They worship only as their fathers worshipped aforetime. Lo! we shall pay them their whole due unabated
Be not then in doubt concerning what these men do serve;- they only serve as their fathers served before; and we will give them their portion undiminished
Have thou no doubts therefore concerning that which they worship: they worship but what their fathers worshipped before them: we will surely assign them their portion with nothing lacking
Be not therefore in doubt concerning that which these men worship: They worship not other than what their fathers worshipped before them; and We will surely give them their full portion, not in the least diminished

We gave Moses the Scripture, but it was disputed. Were it not for a prior word from your Lord, it would have been settled between them. They are in serious doubt concerning it.
And we verily gave unto Moses the Scripture, and there was strife thereupon; and had it not been for a Word that had already gone forth from thy Lord, the case would have been judged between them, and lo! they are in grave doubt concerning it
We gave Moses the Book before, and then they disagreed concerning it, and, had it not been for a word that had been passed by thy Lord, it would have been decided between them; but, verily, they are (still) in hesitating doubt concerning it
Of old gave we Moses the Book, and they fell to variance about it. If a decree of respite had not gone forth from thy Lord, there had surely been a decision between them. Thy people also are in suspicious doubts about the Koran
We formerly gave unto Moses the book of the law; and disputes arose among his people concerning it: And unless a previous decree had proceeded from thy Lord, to bear with them during this life, the matter had been surely decided between them. And thy people are also jealous and in doubt concerning the Koran

Yet among the people are those who take other than God as equals to Him. They love them as the love of God. But those who believe have greater love for God. If only the wrongdoers would realize, when they see the torment; that all power is God's, and that God is severe in punishment.
Yet of mankind are some who take unto themselves (objects of worship which they set as) rivals to Allah, loving them with a love like (that which is the due) of Allah (only) - those who believe are stauncher in their love for Allah - Oh, that those who do evil had but known, (on the day) when they behold the doom, that power belongeth wholly to Allah, and that Allah is severe in punishment
Yet are there some amongst mankind who take to themselves peers other than God; they love them as they should love God while those who believe love God more. O that those who are unjust could only see, when they see the torment, that power is altogether God's! Verily, God is keen to torment
Yet there are men who take to them idols along with God, and love them with the love of God: But stronger in the faithful is the love of God. Oh! the impious will see, when they see their chastisement, that all power is God's, and that God is severe in chastising
Yet some men take idols beside God, and love them as with the love due to God; but the true believers are more fervent in love towards God. Oh that they who act unjustly did perceive, when they behold their punishment, that all power belongeth unto God, and that he is severe in punishing

He commands you to do evil and vice, and to say about God what you do not know.
He enjoineth upon you only the evil and the foul, and that ye should tell concerning Allah that which ye know not
He does but bid you evil and sin, and that ye should speak against God what ye do not know
He only enjoineth you evil and wickedness, and that ye should aver of God that which ye know not
Verily he commandeth you evil and wickedness, and that ye should say that of God which ye know not
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 11:106-108, 6:128, 43:74-75, 78:23, 2:167, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
