How does the Qur'an describe hell?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:24 Then guard yourselves against the Fire prepared for disbelievers, WHOSE FUEL IS OF MEN AND STONES. In because it is the earliest description in the frame and the fuel clause is its whole content.
  2. 02 4:56 As often as their skins are consumed We shall exchange them for fresh skins THAT THEY MAY TASTE THE TORMENT. In because it is the one verse that explains a mechanism, and because the stated purpose of the exchange is continued sensation.
  3. 03 14:16–17 Hell is before him, and he is made to drink a festering water, which he sippeth but can hardly swallow, and DEATH COMETH UNTO HIM FROM EVERY SIDE WHILE YET HE CANNOT DIE. In as ONE PASSAGE because the drinking and the not-dying are one sentence, and because that clause is the sharpest thing in the frame.
  4. 04 22:19–22 Garments of fire cut out for them, boiling fluid poured on their heads, whereby what is in their bellies and their skins is melted; and for them are hooked rods of iron; whenever in their anguish they would go forth they are driven back. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the most sustained physical description in the frame and it ends on the attempted escape.
  5. 05 56:42–44 In scorching wind and scalding water, and shadow of black smoke, NEITHER COOL NOR REFRESHING. In as ONE PASSAGE because it works by inverting three things that would ordinarily be relief - wind, water and shade.
  6. 06 78:21–30 Hell lurketh in ambush, a home for the rebellious; they abide therein for ages; they taste neither coolness nor drink, save boiling water and a paralysing cold; a reward proportioned - for they looked not for a reckoning and called Our revelations false; everything have We recorded in a Book; so taste, no increase do We give you save of torment. In as ONE PASSAGE because it moves from description to CAUSE - a reward proportioned to what was done - and the causal turn is the reason this range is in the frame at all. CONTAINS 78:23, which Does the Qur'an say anyone leaves hell, or is it eternal? also carries with a different reason.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Six passages, and they are more physical, more sensory and more inventive than a summary can convey.

The descriptions work mostly by inversion. 56:42-44 takes wind, water and shade - the three reliefs of a desert - and makes each one a torment: scorching wind, scalding water, and a shadow of black smoke that is NEITHER COOL NOR REFRESHING. 78:24-25 does the same with drink and with temperature, pairing boiling water with a paralysing cold.

Two passages state a mechanism, and both are about the persistence of sensation rather than about pain itself. 4:56 says the skins are exchanged as often as they are consumed, and gives the reason: that they may taste the torment. 14:17 says death comes at him from every side AND YET HE CANNOT DIE. The problem the text is describing is not that the punishment is severe but that it does not end and cannot be escaped by ending.

22:19-22 is the most sustained: garments of fire, boiling fluid poured over the head, what is inside the body melted, hooked rods of iron, and then the attempt to get out and being driven back.

78:21-30 is in the frame for a different reason, and it is why the range runs to thirty rather than stopping at the descriptions. After the ambush, the ages, the boiling water and the cold, the passage turns to CAUSE - a reward proportioned to what was done, because they did not expect a reckoning and called the revelations false - and then to a record: everything have We recorded in a Book. The description is anchored to a judgment and to evidence.

Two further things a reader should have. Whether any of this ends is a separate question and a genuinely unsettled one; Does the Qur'an say anyone leaves hell, or is it eternal? carries the verses on both sides, including 78:23, which appears in both studies. And 2:24 shows the register at its plainest: a Fire whose fuel is men and stones.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:24, widening across 6 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation

6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Talal Itani2012 God does not shy away from making an example of a gnat, or something above it. As for those who believe, they know that it is the Truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did God intend by this example?" He leads astray many thereby, and He guides many thereby; but He misleads thereby only the evildoers.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Lo! Allah disdaineth not to coin the similitude even of a gnat. Those who believe know that it is the truth from their Lord; but those who disbelieve say: What doth Allah wish (to teach) by such a similitude? He misleadeth many thereby, and He guideth many thereby; and He misleadeth thereby only miscreants

Edward Henry Palmer1880 Why, God is not ashamed to set forth a parable of a gnat, or anything beyond; and as for those who believe, they know that it is truth from the Lord; but as for those who disbelieve, they say, 'What is it that God means by this as a parable? He leads astray many and He guides many;' - but He leads astray only the evildoers

John Medows Rodwell1861 Verily God is not ashamed to set forth as well the instance of a gnat as of any nobler object: for as to those who have believed, they know it to be the truth from their Lord; but as to the unbelievers, they will say, "What meaneth God by this comparison?" Many will He mislead by such parables and many guide: but none will He mislead thereby except the wicked

George Sale1734 Moreover God will not be ashamed to propound in a parable a gnat, or even a more despicable thing; for they who believe will know it to be the truth from their Lord; but the unbelievers will say, What meaneth God by this parable? He will thereby mislead many, and will direct many thereby: but He will not mislead any thereby, except the transgressors

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:24, 4:56, 14:16-17, 22:19-22, 56:42-44, 78:21-30, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

al-Tabari

A scholar who wrote Jami' al-bayan, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 923 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.
