And if you are in doubt about what We have revealed to Our servant, then produce a chapter like these, and call your witnesses apart from God, if you are truthful.
What does the Qur'an mean by claiming it cannot be imitated (i'jaz)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:23–24 And if ye are in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto Our slave, THEN PRODUCE A SURAH OF THE LIKE THEREOF, AND CALL YOUR WITNESSES BESIDE GOD if ye are truthful. AND IF YE DO IT NOT - AND YE CAN NEVER DO IT - then guard yourselves against the Fire. The challenge and the prediction of its failure stand consecutively here, and the challenge invites the challengers to call whatever help they can.
- 02 10:38 Or say they: he hath invented it? Say: THEN BRING A SURAH LIKE UNTO IT, and call for help on all ye can beside God, if ye are truthful. Here the same challenge is scaled to a single surah, and it is put as a reply to a specific accusation.
- 03 11:13–14 Or they say: he hath invented it. Say: THEN BRING TEN SURAHS, THE LIKE THEREOF, INVENTED, and call on everyone ye can beside God, if ye are truthful. And if they answer not your prayer, then know that it is revealed only in the knowledge of God. Here the number is ten, not one. The challenge is stated at different sizes in different places, which is worth a reader seeing.
- 04 17:88 Say: verily, though mankind and the jinn should assemble to produce the like of this Qur'an, THEY COULD NOT PRODUCE THE LIKE THEREOF THOUGH THEY WERE HELPERS ONE OF ANOTHER. This is the widest form of it — the whole Qur’an, with mankind and the jinn together — and it is stated as a prediction rather than as an invitation.
- 05 8:31 And when Our revelations are recited unto them they say: WE HAVE HEARD. IF WE WISH WE CAN SPEAK THE LIKE OF THIS. Lo, this is naught but fables of the men of old. This verse records the counter-claim in the objectors’ own words: that they have heard, and could speak the like if they wished. The study on borrowing from the Bible carries it too, for a different reason.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur’an challenges doubters to produce discourse comparable to it. The challenge appears at different scales: something like the whole recitation (52:33–34), ten surahs (11:13) or one surah (2:23; 10:38). Qur’an 17:88 states that humans and jinn could not produce its like even if they assisted one another.
These verses present inability to imitate the Qur’an as evidence supporting its claimed divine origin. They do not provide a scoring system or specify one exclusive basis for the challenge. Later discussions identify eloquence, structure, meaning, coherence, knowledge, prophecy or the combined effect of the text. Those are theories explaining the claim, not wording supplied by the challenge verses themselves.
The restrained conclusion is that the Qur’an issues a public challenge and treats failure to meet it as evidentiary. Whether a proposed text succeeds, what counts as a fair comparison and which qualities are decisive are evaluative questions. AALAMIN can display the challenge; it should not present a later account of iʿjāz as if the Qur’an itself defined the test that way.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:23–24, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

God does not shy away from making an example of a gnat, or something above it. As for those who believe, they know that it is the Truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did God intend by this example?" He leads astray many thereby, and He guides many thereby; but He misleads thereby only the evildoers.
Lo! Allah disdaineth not to coin the similitude even of a gnat. Those who believe know that it is the truth from their Lord; but those who disbelieve say: What doth Allah wish (to teach) by such a similitude? He misleadeth many thereby, and He guideth many thereby; and He misleadeth thereby only miscreants
Why, God is not ashamed to set forth a parable of a gnat, or anything beyond; and as for those who believe, they know that it is truth from the Lord; but as for those who disbelieve, they say, 'What is it that God means by this as a parable? He leads astray many and He guides many;' - but He leads astray only the evildoers
Verily God is not ashamed to set forth as well the instance of a gnat as of any nobler object: for as to those who have believed, they know it to be the truth from their Lord; but as to the unbelievers, they will say, "What meaneth God by this comparison?" Many will He mislead by such parables and many guide: but none will He mislead thereby except the wicked
Moreover God will not be ashamed to propound in a parable a gnat, or even a more despicable thing; for they who believe will know it to be the truth from their Lord; but the unbelievers will say, What meaneth God by this parable? He will thereby mislead many, and will direct many thereby: but He will not mislead any thereby, except the transgressors

Most of them follow not but conjecture. Assuredly conjecture can by no means take the place of truth. Lo! Allah is Aware of what they do
But most of them follow only suspicion; verily, suspicion does not avail against the truth at all; verily, God knows what they do
And most of them follow only a conceit: - But a conceit attaineth to nought of truth! Verily God knoweth what they say

This Quran could not have been produced by anyone other than God. In fact, it is a confirmation of what preceded it, and an elaboration of the Book. There is no doubt about it-it is from the Lord of the Universe.
And this Qur'an is not such as could ever be invented in despite of Allah; but it is a confirmation of that which was before it and an exposition of that which is decreed for mankind - Therein is no doubt - from the Lord of the Worlds
This Qur'an could not have been devised by any beside God; but it verifies that which was before it, and details the Book - there is no doubt therein - from the Lord of the worlds
Moreover this Koran could not have been devised by any but God: but it confirmeth what was revealed before it, and is a clearing up of the Scriptures - there is no doubt thereof - from the Lord of all creatures
This Koran could not have been composed by any except God; but it is a confirmation of that which was revealed before it, and an explanation of the scripture; there is no doubt thereof; sent down from the Lord of all creatures

In fact, they deny what is beyond the limits of their knowledge, and whose explanation has not yet reached them. Thus those before them refused to believe. So note the consequences for the wrongdoers.
Nay, but they denied that, the knowledge whereof they could not compass, and whereof the interpretation (in events) hath not yet come unto them. Even so did those before them deny. Then see what was the consequence for the wrong-doers
Yet they call that a lie, the knowledge of which they cannot compass, while its interpretation has not yet come to them; so did those before them charge with lying, and see what was the end of the unjust
But that which they embrace not in their knowledge have they charged with falsehood, though the explanation of it had not yet been given them. So those who were before them brought charges of imposture: But see what was the end of the unjust
But they have charged that with falsehood, the knowledge whereof they do not comprehend, neither hath the interpretation thereof come unto them. In the same manner did those who were before them, accuse their prophets of imposture; but behold, what was the end of the unjust

11:14 Eğer size karşılık vermezlerse, onun (Kur'an'ın) ancak Allah’ın ilmi ile indirilmiş olduğunu ve O’ndan başka (hak) ilah olmadığını bilin! Artık siz Müslüman oluyor musunuz?

Perhaps you wish to disregard some of what is revealed to you, and you may be stressed because of it, since they say, "If only a treasure was sent down to him, or an angel came with him." You are only a warner, and God is Responsible for all things.
A likely thing, that thou wouldst forsake aught of that which hath been revealed unto thee, and that thy breast should be straitened for it, because they say: Why hath not a treasure been sent down for him, or an angel come with him? Thou art but a warner, and Allah is in charge of all things
Haply thou art leaving part of what is revealed to thee and thy breast is straitened thereby, lest they should say, 'Why is not a treasure sent down to him? or why did not an angel come with him?- thou art only a warner, and God is guardian over all
Perhaps thou wilt suppress a part of what hath been revealed to thee, and wilt be distress at heart lest they say, "If a treasure be not sent down to him, or an angel come with him. . . ." But thou art only a warner, and God hath all things in his charge
Peradventure thou wilt omit to publish part of that which hath been revealed unto thee, and thy breast will become straitened, lest they say, unless a treasure be sent down unto him, or an angel come with him, to bear witness unto him, we will not believe. Verily thou art a preacher only; and God is the governor of all things

When the disbelievers plotted against you, to imprison you, or kill you, or expel you. They planned, and God planned, but God is the Best of planners.

And when those who misbelieve were crafty with thee to detain thee a prisoner, or kill thee, or drive thee forth; they were crafty, but God was crafty too, for God is best of crafty ones

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:23-24, 10:38, 11:13-14, 17:88, 8:31, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - produce + a + surah + of + the + like + thereof; bring + a + surah + like + unto + it; ten + surahs + the + like + thereof; they + could + not + produce + the + like + thereof + though + they + were + helpers; speak + the + like + of + this. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 7:169 - matched incidentally; 51:23 - an oath about truthfulness, not about imitation.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Editorial revision. Reviewer: AALAMIN Remaining Studies Editorial Review, Volume 1. Version date: 2026-09-16. Correction history: the plain-words answer above replaces the version signed earlier, and this study's inclusion reasons were rewritten as plain English. This page additionally requires review by a qualified Arabic and Qur’anic studies specialist before publication; that condition is not discharged by this revision. The Arabic, the translations and the source receipts are unchanged.
