O you who believe! Spend from what We have given you, before a Day comes in which there is neither trading, nor friendship, nor intercession. The disbelievers are the wrongdoers.
What does the Qur'an say about intercession on the Day of Judgment?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:254 Spend of that wherewith We have provided you ere a day come when there will be no trafficking, nor friendship, NOR INTERCESSION. In because it is the flat denial, and because it puts intercession alongside trade and friendship as things that will not operate.
- 02 2:48 Guard yourselves against a day when no soul will in aught avail another, NOR WILL INTERCESSION BE ACCEPTED FROM IT, nor will compensation be received. In because it denies it from the other direction - not that none is offered, but that none is accepted.
- 03 2:255 WHO IS HE THAT INTERCEDETH WITH HIM SAVE BY HIS LEAVE? In because it is the qualification that changes the whole subject, and because it is put as a rhetorical question inside the best-known verse in the book.
- 04 20:109 On that day NO INTERCESSION AVAILETH SAVE that of him unto whom the Beneficent hath given leave AND WHOSE WORD HE ACCEPTETH. In because it is the fullest form of the exception and it requires two things, not one - permission to speak, and acceptance of what is said.
- 05 53:26 And how many angels are in the heavens whose intercession availeth naught SAVE AFTER GOD GIVETH LEAVE to whom He chooseth and accepteth. In because it applies the same restriction to angels, which closes off the assumption that the restriction is only about idols.
- 06 19:87 They will have no power of intercession, SAVE HIM WHO HATH MADE A COVENANT WITH HIS LORD. In because it states the exception in terms of the intercessor's own standing rather than of permission granted on the day.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an denies intercession and then makes an exception, and both halves are emphatic.
The denials are absolute in form. 2:254: a day with no trafficking, no friendship, NO INTERCESSION. 2:48: no soul avails another, and no intercession is ACCEPTED from it. Read alone, these close the subject.
But 2:255 - the Throne verse, the most recited verse in the book - asks: WHO IS HE THAT INTERCEDETH WITH HIM SAVE BY HIS LEAVE? The question presupposes that someone does, with permission.
20:109 gives the fullest version, and its structure matters. Intercession avails only for one to whom the Beneficent HAS GIVEN LEAVE and WHOSE WORD HE ACCEPTS. Two conditions: permission to speak at all, and acceptance of what is said. Permission alone is not enough on the verse's own wording.
53:26 extends the same restriction to ANGELS - however many there are in the heavens, their intercession avails nothing until God gives leave. That verse matters because it shows the restriction is not merely a polemic against idols; it applies to the highest beings the text names.
19:87 states the exception differently again: none has the power of it "save him who hath made a covenant with his Lord" (Pickthall).
So the honest report is that the text rules out intercession as an independent power operating on the Day - the kind that could override a judgment - and leaves open a permitted intercession whose terms are entirely God's. Who intercedes, for whom, and on what basis is not specified in these verses. The extensive material on the Prophet's intercession is , and no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:254, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

These messengers: We gave some advantage over others. To some of them God spoke directly, and some He raised in rank. We gave Jesus son of Mary the clear miracles, and We strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Had God willed, those who succeeded them would not have fought one another, after the clear signs had come to them; but they disputed; some of them believed, and some of them disbelieved. Had God willed, they would not have fought one another; but God does whatever He desires.
Of those messengers, some of whom We have caused to excel others, and of whom there are some unto whom Allah spake, while some of them He exalted (above others) in degree; and We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) and We supported him with the holy Spirit. And if Allah had so wiled it, those who followed after them would not have fought one with another after the clear proofs had come unto them. But they differed, some of them believing and some disbelieving. And if Allah had so willed it, they would not have fought one with another; but Allah doeth what He will
These apostles have we preferred one of them above another. Of them is one to whom God spake; and we have raised some of them degrees; and we have given Jesus the son of Mary manifest signs, and strengthened him by the Holy Spirit. And, did God please, those who came after them would not have fought after there came to them manifest signs. But they did disagree, and of them are some who believe, and of them some who misbelieve, but, did God please, they would not have fought, for God does what He will
Some of the apostles we have endowed more highly than others: Those to whom God hath spoken, He hath raised to the loftiest grade, and to Jesus the Son of Mary we gave manifest signs, and we strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. And if God had pleased, they who came after them would not have wrangled, after the clear signs had reached them. But into disputes they fell: some of them believed, and some were infidels; yet if God had pleased, they would not have thus wrangled: but God doth what he will
These are the apostles; we have preferred some of them before others: Some of them hath God spoken unto, and hath exalted the degree of others of them. And we gave unto Jesus the son of Mary manifest signs, and strengthened him with the holy spirit. And if God had pleased, they who came after those apostles, would not have contended among themselves, after manifest signs had been shewn unto them. But they fell to variance; therefore some of them believed, and some of them believed not; and if God had so pleased, they would not have contended among themselves, but God doth what he will

God! There is no god except He, the Living, the Everlasting. Neither slumber overtakes Him, nor sleep. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His permission? He knows what is before them, and what is behind them; and they cannot grasp any of His knowledge, except as He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not burden Him. He is the Most High, the Great.

Allah! There is no deity save Him, the Alive, the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep overtaketh Him. Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is he that intercedeth with Him save by His leave? He knoweth that which is in front of them and that which is behind them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge save what He will. His throne includeth the heavens and the earth, and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime, the Tremendous
God, there is no god but He, the living, the self-subsistent. Slumber takes Him not, nor sleep. His is what is in the heavens and what is in the earth. Who is it that intercedes with Him save by His permission? He knows what is before them and what behind them, and they comprehend not aught of His knowledge but of what He pleases. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and it tires Him not to guard them both, for He is high and grand

Who is he that can intercede with Him but by His own permission? He knoweth what hath been before them and what shall be after them; yet nought of His knowledge shall they grasp, save what He willeth. God! There is no God but he; the living, the self-subsisting: Neither slumber nor sleep seizeth him; to him belongeth whatsoever is in heaven, and on earth. Who is he that can intercede with him, but through his good pleasure? He knoweth that which is past, and that which is to come unto them, and they shall not comprehend any thing of his knowledge, but so far as he pleaseth. His throne is extended over heaven and earth, and the preservation of both is no burden unto him. He is the high, the mighty

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Allahu është Ai përveç të Cilit nuk ka zot që meriton të adhurohet, i Përjetshmi, Mbajtësi i gjithçkaje. Atë nuk e kap dremitja e as gjumi.

There shall be no compulsion in religion; the right way has become distinct from the wrong way. Whoever renounces evil and believes in God has grasped the most trustworthy handle; which does not break. God is Hearing and Knowing.
There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower
There is no compulsion in religion; the right way has been distinguished from the wrong, and whoso disbelieves in Taghut and believes in God, he has got hold of the firm handle in which is no breaking off; but God both hears and knows
Let there be no compulsion in Religion. Now is the right way made distinct from error. Whoever therefore shall deny Thagout and believe in God - he will have taken hold on a strong handle that shall not be broken: and God is He who Heareth, Knoweth
Let there be no violence in religion. Now is right direction manifestly distinguished from deceit: Whoever therefore shall deny Tagut(false gods), and believe in God, he shall surely take hold on a strong handle, which shall not be broken; God is he who heareth and seeth

Those who do not believe in the Hereafter give the angels the names of females.
Lo! it is those who disbelieve in the Hereafter who name the angels with the names of females
Verily, those who believe not in the hereafter do surely name the angels with female names
Verily, it is they who believe not in the life to come, who name the angels with names of females
Verily they who believe not in the life to come give unto the angels a female appellation

They have no knowledge of that. They only follow assumptions, and assumptions are no substitute for the truth.
And they have no knowledge thereof. They follow but a guess, and lo! a guess can never take the place of the truth
but they have no knowledge thereof; they do but follow suspicion, and, verily, suspicion shall not avail against the truth at all
But herein they have no knowledge: they follow a mere conceit; and mere conceit can never take the place of truth
But they have no knowledge herein: They follow no other than a bare opinion; and a bare opinion attaineth not any thing of truth

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:254, 2:48, 2:255, 20:109, 53:26, 19:87, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - no + intercession; intercession + avail; intercede + save + permission; intercessor + save; day + no + intercession. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 7 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:123 - recorded so the repetition is visible; 10:3 - near-identical to 2:255; carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about creation in 'six days'?; 11:105 - speech in general, not intercession; 32:4 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about creation in 'six days'?; 34:23 - near-identical to 20:109, which is kept; 36:23 - about idols specifically; 74:48 - near-identical to 2:254 in force.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
