God! There is no god except He, the Living, the Everlasting. Neither slumber overtakes Him, nor sleep. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His permission? He knows what is before them, and what is behind them; and they cannot grasp any of His knowledge, except as He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not burden Him. He is the Most High, the Great.
Where does the protective power of Ayat al-Kursi come from - is it in the Qur'an?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:255 GOD! THERE IS NO DEITY SAVE HIM, THE ALIVE, THE ETERNAL. NEITHER SLUMBER NOR SLEEP OVERTAKETH HIM. Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is he that intercedeth with Him save by His leave?... HIS THRONE INCLUDETH THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH, AND HE IS NEVER WEARY OF PRESERVING THEM. This is the verse itself, in full. What it actually says is a statement about God — that neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him, and that He is never weary of preserving the heavens and the earth — and not a promise made to whoever recites it.
- 02 17:82 And We reveal of the Qur'an that which is A HEALING AND A MERCY FOR BELIEVERS, though it increase the evil-doers in naught save ruin. This verse attaches a beneficial effect to part of the Qur’an, and does so in a measured way: it is partitive, it names believers, and it says the same revelation increases the evil-doers in nothing but ruin. The studies on healing and mercy and on the Qur’an as healing carry it too.
- 03 113:1–5 Say: I SEEK REFUGE IN THE LORD OF THE DAYBREAK from the evil of that which He created; from the evil of the darkness when it is intense; from the evil of malignant witchcraft; AND FROM THE EVIL OF THE ENVIER WHEN HE ENVIETH. These are the words the Qur’an itself gives for seeking protection, which is the honest answer to what the text provides. The study on seeking refuge carries this passage too, for a different reason.
- 04 16:98–99 And when thou recitest the Qur'an, SEEK REFUGE IN GOD FROM SATAN THE OUTCAST. LO, HE HATH NO POWER OVER THOSE WHO BELIEVE AND PUT TRUST IN THEIR LORD. The instruction here is to seek refuge in God before reciting, so the protection is sought from God rather than obtained from the text. The study on the isti’adha carries this passage too, for a different reason.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Ayat al-Kursī (2:255) is a declaration of God’s life, self-subsistence, knowledge, sovereignty and tireless preservation of the heavens and earth. Its content is deeply connected with divine protection: nothing escapes God’s knowledge or authority, and guarding creation does not weary Him.
The verse itself does not instruct the reader to recite it at a particular time or promise that a reciter will be protected until morning, after prayer or upon entering a home. Those specific practices and promises are found in and later devotional teaching.
It is therefore too simple either to say that protection has nothing to do with the verse or that every popular protective claim is stated by the Qur’an. The theology of protection is present in what the verse says about God; the ritual use and promised outcomes attached to its recitation come from another source layer. AALAMIN should show both without merging them.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:255, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Atë nuk e kap dremitja e as gjumi.

These messengers: We gave some advantage over others. To some of them God spoke directly, and some He raised in rank. We gave Jesus son of Mary the clear miracles, and We strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Had God willed, those who succeeded them would not have fought one another, after the clear signs had come to them; but they disputed; some of them believed, and some of them disbelieved. Had God willed, they would not have fought one another; but God does whatever He desires.
Of those messengers, some of whom We have caused to excel others, and of whom there are some unto whom Allah spake, while some of them He exalted (above others) in degree; and We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) and We supported him with the holy Spirit. And if Allah had so wiled it, those who followed after them would not have fought one with another after the clear proofs had come unto them. But they differed, some of them believing and some disbelieving. And if Allah had so willed it, they would not have fought one with another; but Allah doeth what He will
These apostles have we preferred one of them above another. Of them is one to whom God spake; and we have raised some of them degrees; and we have given Jesus the son of Mary manifest signs, and strengthened him by the Holy Spirit. And, did God please, those who came after them would not have fought after there came to them manifest signs. But they did disagree, and of them are some who believe, and of them some who misbelieve, but, did God please, they would not have fought, for God does what He will
Some of the apostles we have endowed more highly than others: Those to whom God hath spoken, He hath raised to the loftiest grade, and to Jesus the Son of Mary we gave manifest signs, and we strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. And if God had pleased, they who came after them would not have wrangled, after the clear signs had reached them. But into disputes they fell: some of them believed, and some were infidels; yet if God had pleased, they would not have thus wrangled: but God doth what he will
These are the apostles; we have preferred some of them before others: Some of them hath God spoken unto, and hath exalted the degree of others of them. And we gave unto Jesus the son of Mary manifest signs, and strengthened him with the holy spirit. And if God had pleased, they who came after those apostles, would not have contended among themselves, after manifest signs had been shewn unto them. There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower
There is no compulsion in religion; the right way has been distinguished from the wrong, and whoso disbelieves in Taghut and believes in God, he has got hold of the firm handle in which is no breaking off; but God both hears and knows
Let there be no compulsion in Religion. Now is the right way made distinct from error. Whoever therefore shall deny Thagout and believe in God - he will have taken hold on a strong handle that shall not be broken: and God is He who Heareth, Knoweth
Let there be no violence in religion. Now is right direction manifestly distinguished from deceit: Whoever therefore shall deny Tagut(false gods), and believe in God, he shall surely take hold on a strong handle, which shall not be broken; God is he who heareth and seeth

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:255, 17:82, 113:1-5, 16:98-99, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - neither + slumber + nor + sleep + overtaketh + him; his + throne + includeth + the + heavens; the + preserving + of + them + wearieth + him + not; we + reveal + of + the + qur'an + that + which + is + a + healing. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Editorial revision. Reviewer: AALAMIN Remaining Studies Editorial Review, Volume 1. Version date: 2026-09-16. Correction history: the plain-words answer above replaces the version signed earlier, and this study's inclusion reasons were rewritten as plain English. The Arabic, the translations and the source receipts are unchanged.
