And Job, when he cried out to his Lord: "Great harm has afflicted me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful."
What does the Qur'an say about Job and his patience?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 21:83–84 And Job, when he cried unto his Lord: LO, ADVERSITY AFFLICTETH ME, AND THOU ART MOST MERCIFUL OF ALL WHO SHOW MERCY. Then We heard his prayer and removed the adversity from him, AND WE GAVE HIM HIS HOUSEHOLD AND THE LIKE THEREOF ALONG WITH THEM, a mercy from Our store, and a remembrance for the worshippers. In as ONE PASSAGE because the prayer is nine words long and the answer is in the next verse.
- 02 38:41–44 And make mention of Our bondman Job, when he cried unto his Lord: lo, the devil doth afflict me with distress and torment. And it was said unto him: STRIKE THE GROUND WITH THY FOOT: THIS IS A COOL BATH AND A REFRESHING DRINK. And We bestowed on him his household and the like thereof along with them, a mercy from Us... LO, WE FOUND HIM STEADFAST. HOW EXCELLENT A SLAVE! LO, HE WAS EVER TURNING IN REPENTANCE. In as ONE PASSAGE because the whole of the Qur'an's Job is here - the complaint, an oddly physical remedy, restoration, and the verdict.
- 03 6:84 And Isaac and Jacob... and Noah... and David and Solomon AND JOB and Joseph and Moses and Aaron. In because Job is placed in the list of prophets rather than treated as a separate case.
- 04 4:163 Lo, We inspire thee as We inspired Noah and the prophets after him, as We inspired Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, AND JESUS AND JOB and Jonah and Aaron and Solomon. In because it names him among those inspired, which the Qur'an does not do for every figure it tells stories about.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Job's patience is famous, and the Qur'an's version is unexpectedly short and unexpectedly gentle.
There is no debate here. No friends arguing with him for chapters, no long speeches, no demand for an explanation. What there is, at 21:83, is a nine-word prayer: LO, ADVERSITY AFFLICTETH ME, AND THOU ART MOST MERCIFUL OF ALL WHO SHOW MERCY. He states his condition and states an attribute of God, and stops.
The answer comes in the next verse: We heard him, removed the adversity, AND GAVE HIM HIS HOUSEHOLD AND THE LIKE THEREOF ALONG WITH THEM.
38:41-44 tells it again with more detail and the detail is strange. He says the devil afflicts him with distress. And the instruction he receives is physical and small: STRIKE THE GROUND WITH THY FOOT - THIS IS A COOL BATH AND A REFRESHING DRINK. A spring, for washing and drinking. The remedy for the most famous suffering in scripture is a place to wash.
Then the verdict, and it is the only place the Qur'an uses this exact commendation of him: LO, WE FOUND HIM STEADFAST. HOW EXCELLENT A SLAVE! LO, HE WAS EVER TURNING IN REPENTANCE.
That last phrase is the same one used of David at 38:17.
38:44 also contains an instruction about a bundle of rushes and an oath, which all four translators render differently and none explains. The Qur'an does not narrate what the oath was about.
The material a reader may know - the wife, the boils, the friends, the long dialogue - is the biblical book and later story literature. Neither has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 21:83–84, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Sa rob i shkëlqyer! Ai kthehej gjithnjë i penduar (drejt Zotit).

38:41 Kulumuz Eyyûb’u da an.
O, ne iyi kuldu daima Allah’a yönelirdi.

আর আমি তাকে দান করেছি ইসহাক ও ইয়াকূবকে। প্রত্যেককে আমি হিদায়াত দিয়েছি এবং নূহকে পূর্বে হিদায়াত দিয়েছি। আর তার সন্তানদের মধ্য থেকে দাঊদ, সুলায়মান, আইয়ূব, ইউসুফ, মূসা ও হারূনকে । আর আমি এভাবেই সৎকর্মশীলদেরকেও প্রতিদান দেই।
I Mi mu darovasmo Ishaka i Jakuba; i svakog uputismo – a Nuha smo još prije uputili – i od potomaka njegovih Davuda, i Sulejmana, i Ejjuba, i Jusufa, i Musaa, i Haruna – eto, tako Mi nagrađujemo one koji dobra djela čine,

Und Wir schenkten ihm Ishaq und Ya'qub; jeden (von ihnen) haben Wir rechtgeleitet. Und (auch) Nuh haben Wir zuvor rechtgeleitet, und aus seiner Nachkommenschaft Dawud, Sulayman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Musa und Harun - auf diese Weise vergelten Wir (es) den Gutes Tuenden -;

E Gli abbiamo donato Is’ħaq e Ya’qub, e abbiamo guidato entrambi – e in passato avevamo guidato Nūħ– e tra i suoi figli avevamo guidato Dāwūd, Suleymēn, Eyyūb, Yūsuf, Mūsā e Hārūn – e così premiamo i pii –

И Ми смо му даровали Исака и Јакова; и сваког упутисмо - а Ноја смо још пре упутили - и од потомака његових Давида, и Соломуна, и Јова, и Јосифа, и Мојсија, и Арона - ето, тако Ми награђујемо оне који добра дела чине;

İbrahim’e, İshak ve Ya'kûb’u bağışladık, her birini de hidayete erdirdik. Daha önce Núh’u hidayete erdirmiştik. O’nun soyundan Dâvud, Süleyman, Eyyûb, Yûsuf, Mûsâ ve Hârûn’u da hidayete erdirmiştik. İşte iyileri biz böyle mükâfatlandırırız

That was Our argument which We gave to Abraham against his people. We elevate by degrees whomever We will. Your Lord is Wise and Informed.
That is Our argument. We gave it unto Abraham against his folk. We raise unto degrees of wisdom whom We will. Lo! thy Lord is Wise, Aware

The translators word this verse differently
Messengers delivering good news, and bringing warnings; so that people may have no excuse before God after the coming of the messengers. God is Powerful and Wise.
Messengers of good cheer and of warning, in order that mankind might have no argument against Allah after the messengers. Allah was ever Mighty, Wise
apostles giving glad tidings and warning, that men should have no argument against God, after the apostles, for God is mighty, wise
Apostles charged to announce and to warn, that men, after those apostles, might have no plea against God. And God is Mighty, Wise
apostles declaring good tidings, and denouncing threats, lest men should have an argument of excuse against God, after the apostles had been sent unto them; God is mighty and wise
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 21:83-84, 38:41-44, 6:84, 4:163, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - job + when + he + cried + unto + his + lord; adversity + hath + afflicted + me; strike + the + ground + with + thy + foot; how + excellent + a + slave. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 38:30 - matched incidentally on the excellent-slave formula.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
