Some messengers We have already told you about, while some messengers We have not told you about. And God spoke to Moses directly.
How many prophets does the Qur'an name?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:164 AND MESSENGERS WE HAVE MENTIONED UNTO THEE BEFORE AND MESSENGERS WE HAVE NOT MENTIONED UNTO THEE; and God spake directly unto Moses. In because it is the verse that answers the question and answers it by saying the list is incomplete. ALSO CARRIED by the study Did God speak directly to any human, according to the Qur'an?, with a different reason there.
- 02 40:78 Verily We sent messengers before thee, among them those of whom We have told thee, AND SOME OF WHOM WE HAVE NOT TOLD THEE. In because it repeats 4:164's statement in another surah, which makes it deliberate rather than incidental.
- 03 10:47 AND FOR EVERY NATION THERE IS A MESSENGER. And when their messenger cometh (on the Day of Judgment) it will be judged between them fairly. In because it makes the number a function of the number of nations rather than a fixed figure.
- 04 35:24 And there is not a nation but a warner hath passed among them. In because it states the same in the past tense. ALSO CARRIED by What is the Prophet's role in the Qur'an - warner and bringer of good news? and What does the Qur'an say about those who never received a message?, with different reasons there.
- 05 6:83–86 And Isaac and Jacob... and Noah... and David and Solomon and Job and Joseph and Moses and Aaron... and Zachariah and John and Jesus and Elias... and Ishmael and Elisha and Jonah and Lot. Each one (of them) did We prefer above the worlds. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the longest run of names in the Qur'an and shows what the text's own naming actually looks like.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an answers this question by declining to give a number, and it declines twice.
4:164: MESSENGERS WE HAVE MENTIONED UNTO THEE BEFORE, AND MESSENGERS WE HAVE NOT MENTIONED UNTO THEE. 40:78 says the same in another surah: some of whom We have told thee, AND SOME OF WHOM WE HAVE NOT TOLD THEE.
So the text states outright that its own list is partial. Any count of names in the Qur'an is a count of what it happens to mention, and the book says so.
What it does instead is give a rule. 10:47: FOR EVERY NATION THERE IS A MESSENGER. And 35:24 in the past tense: there is not a nation but a warner has passed among them. The number is tied to the number of communities, which the text does not count either.
The longest actual list is 6:83-86, which names in one run: Isaac, Jacob, Noah, David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Zachariah, John, Jesus, Elias, Ishmael, Elisha, Jonah and Lot - and adds that each was preferred above the worlds. Abraham is the subject of the passage they are given to. Counting the names scattered across the whole text yields around twenty-five, depending on whether one counts figures like Dhul-Qarnayn, Luqman and Khidr, whom the text does not call prophets.
The very large traditional figures - the tens of thousands, and the count of messengers among them - come from . No hadith collection has cleared the rights audit, so this study cannot report or assess them. What it can report is that the Qur'an says its list is incomplete and gives no total.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:164, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

We sent messengers before you. Some of them We told you about, and some We did not tell you about. No messenger can bring a miracle except by leave of God. Then, when the command of God is issued, fair judgment will be passed, and there and then the seekers of vanity will lose.

Verily We sent messengers before thee, among them those of whom We have told thee, and some of whom We have not told thee; and it was not given to any messenger that he should bring a portent save by Allah's leave, but when Allah's commandment cometh (the cause) is judged aright, and the followers of vanity will then be lost
And we did send apostles before thee: of them are some whose stories we have related to thee, and of them are some whose stories we have not related to thee; and no apostle might ever bring a sign except by the permission of God; but when God's bidding came it was decided with truth, and there were those lost who deemed it vain
And we have already sent apostles before thee: of some we have told thee, and of others we have told thee nothing: but no apostle had the power to work a miracle unless by the leave of God. But when God's behest cometh, everything will be decided with truth: and then they perish who treated it as a vain thing
We have sent a great number of apostles before thee; the histories of some of whom We have related unto thee, and the histories of others of them We have not related unto thee: But no apostle had the power to produce a sign, unless by the permission of God. When the command of God, therefore, shall come, judgment shall be given with truth; and then shall they perish who endeavour to render the signs of God of no effect

И ни один посланник не мог явить знамение иначе как с дозволения Аллаха. А когда приходит веление Аллаха, между ними рассудят по справедливости, и тогда сторонники ложного окажутся в убытке.

So be patient. The promise of God is true. Whether We show you some of what We have promised them, or take you to Us, to Us they will be returned.
Then have patience (O Muhammad). Lo! the promise of Allah is true. And whether we let thee see a part of that which We promise them, or (whether) We cause thee to die, still unto Us they will be brought back
But be thou patient; verily, the promise of God is true; and whether we show thee a part of what we promised them, or whether we surely take thee to ourself, unto us shall they be returned
Therefore be thou steadfast in patience: for the promise of God is truth: and whether we shall make thee see part of the woes with which we threatened them, or whether we cause thee first to die, unto us shall they be brought back
Wherefore persevere with patience, O Mohammed; for the promise of God is true. Whether We cause thee to see any part of the punishment with which We have threatened them, or whether We cause thee to die before thou see it; before Us shall they be assembled at the last day

If they disbelieve you, those before them also disbelieved. Their messengers came to them with the clear proofs, with the Psalms, and with the Enlightening Scripture.
And if they deny thee, those before them also denied. Their messengers came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), and with the Psalms and the Scripture giving light
And if they called thee liar, those before thee called their apostles liars too, who came to them with manifest signs, and the Scriptures, and the illuminating Book
And if they treat thee as a liar, so did those who were before them threat their Apostles who came to them with the proofs of their mission, and with the Scriptures and with the enlightening Book
If they charge thee with imposture, they who were before them likewise charged their apostles with imposture. Their apostles came unto them with evident miracles, and with divine writings, and with the enlightening book

Then I seized those who disbelieved-so how was My rejection?
Then seized I those who disbelieved, and how intense was My abhorrence
Then I seized those who misbelieved, and what a change it was
Then chastised I the unbelievers: and how great was my vengeance
Afterwards I chastised those who were unbelievers; and how severe was my vengeance

That is Our argument. We gave it unto Abraham against his folk. We raise unto degrees of wisdom whom We will. Lo! thy Lord is Wise, Aware
These are our arguments which we gave to Abraham against his people;- we raise the rank of whom we will; verily, thy Lord is wise and knowing
This is our reasoning with which we furnished Abraham against his people: We uplift to grades of wisdom whom we will; Verily thy Lord is Wise, Knowing
And that is Our argument which We gave to Abraham against his people. We exalt in decrees of rank whomso We please. Thy Lord is indeed Wise, All-Knowing

Hepsi salihlerdendi.
6:86 İsmail’e, Elyesa’ya,Yûnus’a ve Lût’a da (hidâyet verdik). Her birini âlemlere üstün kıldık.

And why should I fear those you associate with Him, and you do not fear associating others with God for which He sent down to you no authority? Which side is more entitled to security, if you are aware?"
How should I fear that which ye set up beside Him, when ye fear not to set up beside Allah that for which He hath revealed unto you no warrant? Which of the two factions hath more right to safety? (Answer me that) if ye have knowledge
How should I fear what ye associate with Him, when ye yourselves fear not to associate with God what He has sent down to you no power to do? Which then of the two sects is worthier of belief, if indeed ye know
And how should I fear what ye have joined with God, since ye fear not for having joined with Him that for which He hath sent you down no warranty? Which, therefore, of the two parties is more worthy of safety? Know ye that
And why should I fear that which you associate with God, when you fear not to associate with God that for which He has sent down to you no authority? Which, then, of the two parties has better title to security, If indeed you know

Those who believe, and do not obscure their faith with wrongdoing-those will have security, and they are guided.
Those who believe and obscure not their belief by wrongdoing, theirs is safety; and they are rightly guided
Those who believe and do not obscure their faith with wrong, they are those who shall have security, and they are guided
They who believe, and who clothe not their faith with error. theirs is safety, and they are guided aright
Those who belief and mix not up their belief with injustice -- it is they who shall have peace, and who are rightly guided

The translators word this verse differently
Such is God's guidance. He guides with it whomever He wills of His servants. Had they associated, their deeds would have gone in vain.
Such is the guidance of Allah wherewith He guideth whom He will of His bondmen. But if they had set up (for worship) aught beside Him, (all) that they did would have been vain
That is God's guidance; He guides those whom He will of His servants; and if they associate aught with Him,- vain is that which they have worked
This is God's guidance: He guideth by it such of his servants as he will: But if they join others god with Him, vain assuredly shall be all their works
That is the guidance of God. He guides thereby those of His servants whom He pleases. And if they had worshiped aught beside Him, surely all they did would have been of no avail to them
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:164, 40:78, 10:47, 35:24, 6:83-86, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - messengers + we + have + mentioned + unto + thee + before; messengers + we + have + not + mentioned; every + nation + hath + its + messenger; there + is + not + a + nation + but + a + warner. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
