Good and evil are not equal. Repel evil with good, and the person who was your enemy becomes like an intimate friend.
What does the Qur'an say about repelling evil with good?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 41:34 The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better - then lo, he between whom and thee there was enmity (will become) as though he were a bosom friend. In because it is the fullest form and the only one that states an outcome, and the outcome is a changed relationship rather than a reward.
- 02 23:96 Repel evil with that which is better. We are best aware of that which they allege. In because it is the bare imperative, and because the second clause hands the assessment of the wrong to God rather than to the person wronged.
- 03 28:54 These will be given their reward twice over, because they are steadfast and repel evil with good, and spend of what We have provided. In because it attaches a doubled reward and lists the practice beside steadfastness and spending.
- 04 5:100 The evil and the good are not alike, even though the plenty of the evil attract thee. In because it states the premise the instruction rests on, and concedes that the evil may look the more abundant.
- 05 40:58 The blind man and the seer are not equal, neither are those who believe and do good works (equal with) the evil-doer. Little do ye reflect. In because it repeats the not-alike formula in a different image and closes by naming the difficulty as one of reflection.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five verses, and 41:34 is the one that carries the idea to its end.
Most of what a search returns here is about REWARD for good deeds, or about warding off evil in the sense of piety. Eight such verses are recorded as drops. The question asks about something narrower and stranger: answering a wrong with a kindness.
41:34 states it and then says what it is for. Repel the evil deed with one which is better - and the man who was your enemy becomes as though he were a close friend. The verse offers a result in this world, between two people, and it is the only one here that does.
23:96 gives the instruction stripped bare, and then adds a clause that changes its weight: We are best aware of what they allege. The person wronged is relieved of the job of assessing the wrong.
5:100 and 40:58 supply the premise both instructions rest on - the good and the evil are not alike - and 5:100 concedes something worth noticing: even though the plenty of the evil attract thee. The text does not claim the good will look better.
28:54 attaches a doubled reward, and puts the practice in company: steadfastness, and spending.
None of these verses says a wrong may not be answered. Retaliation and its limits (qisas) are taken up by the study What does the Qur'an say about retaliation and its limits (qisas)?, and this study should be read against it rather than in place of it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 41:34, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Moreover, good and evil are not to be treated as the same thing. Turn away evil by what is better, and lo! he between whom and thyself was enmity, shall be as though he were a warm friend

Verily the creation of heaven and earth is more considerable than the creation of man: But the greater part of men do not understand
40:58 — the verse above
إِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَـَٔاتِيَةٌ لَّا رَيْبَ فِيهَا وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

Indeed, the Hour is coming; there is no doubt about it; but most people do not believe.
Lo! the Hour is surely coming, there is no doubt thereof; yet most of mankind believe not
Verily, the Hour will surely come; there is no doubt therein; but most men do not believe
Aye, "the Hour" will surely come: there is no doubt of it: but most men believe it not
The last hour will surely come; there is no doubt thereof: But the greater part of men believe it not
وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِى سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ

Your Lord has said, "Pray to Me, and I will respond to you. But those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell forcibly."
And your Lord hath said: Pray unto Me and I will hear your prayer. Lo! those who scorn My service, they will enter hell, disgraced
And your Lord said, 'Call upon me, I will answer you; verily, those who are too big with pride to worship shall enter into hell, shrinking up
And your Lord saith, "Call upon me - I will hearken unto you: but they who turn in disdain from my service shall enter Hell with shame
Your Lord saith, call upon Me; and I will hear you: But they who proudly disdain my service, shall enter with ignominy into hell

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 41:34, 23:96, 28:54, 5:100, 40:58, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - repel + evil + better; repel + evil + good; turn + away + evil + better; avert + evil + good; good + evil + not + equal; requite + evil + good; ward + off + better. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 8 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 6:157 - reason not recorded; 6:160 - reason not recorded; 7:169 - reason not recorded; 12:57 - reason not recorded; 12:109 - matched on better; the subject is historical warning; 16:30 - reason not recorded; 25:15 - the same taqwa sense; 40:40 - reason not recorded.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
