And exhort your people to pray, and patiently adhere to it. We ask of you no sustenance, but it is We who sustain you. The good ending is that for righteousness.
Can I make my family pray or fast?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 20:132 The renderings divide on whom the command reaches: Rodwell has "Enjoin prayer on thy family" and Sale has "Command thy family to observe prayer", while Itani has "exhort your people to pray" and Pickthall has "enjoin upon thy people worship". Each turns back to the one addressed, and Palmer has "persevere in it".
- 02 66:6 Itani has "Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire", and Pickthall has "Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire". The verse names the self first and the family with it; it does not say how.
- 03 2:256 Itani has "There shall be no compulsion in religion", and Sale has "Let there be no violence in religion". The verse gives its reason in the same sentence: Itani has "the right way has become distinct from the wrong way".
- 04 10:99 Itani has "Had your Lord willed, everyone on earth would have believed" and then "Will you compel people to become believers?" The question is put to the one addressed, and it is about belief.
- 05 88:21–22 Pickthall has "Remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer". Itani has "You have no control over them", and Rodwell has "Thou hast no authority over them". The passage gives the one who reminds a task and sets its limit.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The five print a command to bid prayer at home, and they print limits on compulsion. None of the verses here speaks of fasting.
At 20:132 the renderings divide on how far the command reaches. Rodwell has "Enjoin prayer on thy family" and Sale has "Command thy family to observe prayer"; Itani has "exhort your people to pray" and Palmer has "Bid thy people prayer". In every rendering the same verse turns back to the one addressed, and Pickthall has "be constant therein". 66:6 joins the self and the family: Itani has "Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire".
The verses on compulsion speak of religion and belief. At 2:256 Itani has "There shall be no compulsion in religion". At 10:99 Itani has "Will you compel people to become believers?" At 88:21-22 the one who reminds is told the limit of the task, and Pickthall has "Thou art not at all a warder over them".
The verses stand side by side: a household is to be bidden to pray, and religion is not to be forced. The text does not draw the line between bidding and forcing for the reader, and this study does not join the two into a rule.
How a family is taught prayer or fasting, from what age, and what follows if they do not, are questions for and jurisprudence, a layer this platform does not hold or show.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 20:132, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And enjoin upon thy people worship, and be constant therein. We ask not of thee a provision: We provided for thee. And the sequel is for righteousness
Bid thy people prayer, and persevere in it; we do not ask thee to provide. We will provide, and the issue shall be to piety
Enjoin prayer on thy family, and persevere therein. We ask not of thee to find thine own provision - we will provide for thee, and a happy issue shall there be to piety
Command thy family to observe prayer; and do thou persevere therein. We require not of thee that thou labour to gain necessary provisions for thyself and family: We will provide for thee; for the prosperous issue shall attend on piety

So bear patiently what they say, and celebrate the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting. And during the hours of the night glorify Him, and at the borders of the day, that you may be satisfied.
Therefor (O Muhammad), bear with what they say, and celebrate the praise of thy Lord ere the rising of the sun and ere the going down thereof. And glorify Him some hours of the night and at the two ends of the day, that thou mayst find acceptance
Bear patiently then what they say, and celebrate the praises of thy Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting, and at times in the night celebrate them; and at the ends of the day; haply thou mayest please (Him)
Put up then with what they say; and celebrate the praise of thy Lord before the sunrise, and before its setting; and some time in the night do thou praise him, and in the extremes of the day, that thou haply mayest please Him
Wherefore do thou, O Mohammed, patiently bear that which they say; and celebrate the praise of thy Lord before the rising of the sun, and before the setting thereof, and praise him in the hours of the night, and in the extremities of the day, that thou mayest be well pleased with the prospect of receiving favour from God

And do not strain after what we have provided a few of them with - the flourish of the life of this world, to try them by; but the provision of thy Lord is better and more lasting
And strain not thine eye after what We have bestowed on divers of them - the braveries of this world - that we may thereby prove them. The portion which thy Lord will give, is better and more lasting

If you repent to God, then your hearts have listened. But if you band together against him, then God is his Ally, as is Gabriel, and the righteous believers. In addition, the angels will assist him.
If ye twain turn unto Allah repentant, (ye have cause to do so) for your hearts desired (the ban); and if ye aid one another against him (Muhammad) then lo! Allah, even He, is his Protecting Friend, and Gabriel and the righteous among the believers; and furthermore the angels are his helpers
If ye both turn repentant unto God, - for your hearts have swerved! - but if ye back each other up against him,- verily, God, He is the sovereign; and Gabriel and the righteous of the believers, and the angels after that, will back him up
If ye both be turned to God in penitence, for now have your hearts gone astray . . . . but if ye conspire against the Prophet, then know that God is his Protector, and Gabriel, and every just man among the faithful; and the angels are his helpers besides
If ye both be turned unto God -- for your hearts have swerved -- it is well: But if ye join against him, verily God is his patron; and Gabriel, and the good man among the faithful, and the angels also are his assistants

Have you not considered him who argued with Abraham about his Lord, because God had given him sovereignty? Abraham said, "My Lord is He who gives life and causes death." He said, "I give life and cause death." Abraham said, "God brings the sun from the East, so bring it from the West," so the blasphemer was confounded. God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Bethink thee of him who had an argument with Abraham about his Lord, because Allah had given him the kingdom; how, when Abraham said: My Lord is He Who giveth life and causeth death, he answered: I give life and cause death. Abraham said: Lo! Allah causeth the sun to rise in the East, so do thou cause it to come up from the West. Thus was the disbeliever abashed. And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk
Do you not look at him who disputed with Abraham about his Lord, that God had given him the kingdom? When Abraham said, 'My Lord is He who giveth life and death,' he said, 'I give life and death.' Abraham said, 'But verily, God brings the sun from the east, do thou then bring it from the west?' And he who misbelieved was dumbfounded, for God does not guide unjust folk
Hast thou not thought on him who disputed with Abraham about his Lord, because God had given him the kingdom? When Abraham said, "My Lord is He who maketh alive and cause to die:" He said, "It is I who make alive and cause to die!" Abraham said, "Since God bringeth the sun from the East, do thou, then, bring it from the West." The infidel was confounded; for God guideth not the evil doers
Hast thou not considered him who disputed with Abraham concerning his Lord, because God had given him the kingdom? When Abraham said, my Lord is he who giveth life, and killeth: He answered, I give life, and I kill. Abraham said, verily God bringeth the sun from the east, now do thou bring it from the west. Whereupon the infidel was confounded; for God directeth not the ungoldly people

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The anchors are the verse that tells the one addressed to bid prayer on his people or family (20:132), the verse that tells believers to protect themselves and their families (66:6), and three verses on compulsion and its limits (2:256, 10:99, 88:21-22). None of these five verses names fasting, and this study reports that rather than adding a verse for it. This study does not say how a family is taught prayer or fasting, from what age, or what follows if they do not. Those questions are answered in and jurisprudence, a layer this platform does not hold or show.
