Say, "I have no control over any benefit or harm to myself, except as God wills. Had I known the future, I would have acquired much good, and no harm would have touched me. I am only a warner, and a herald of good news to a people who believe."
What could and couldn't the Prophet do - miracles, the unseen?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 7:188 Say: FOR MYSELF I HAVE NO POWER TO BENEFIT, NOR POWER TO HURT, save that which God willeth. HAD I KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNSEEN I SHOULD HAVE ABUNDANCE OF WEALTH, AND ADVERSITY WOULD NOT TOUCH ME. I am but a warner. In because it is the fullest denial, and the argument offered against his having hidden knowledge is his own ordinary circumstances. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about believing in the unseen (al-ghayb)?, with a different reason there.
- 02 46:9 Say: I am no new thing among the messengers, NOR KNOW I WHAT WILL BE DONE WITH ME OR WITH YOU. I do but follow that which is inspired in me, and I am but a plain warner. In because the ignorance extends to his own fate, which is as far as the denial can go.
- 03 6:109–111 And they swear by God that if a portent came unto them they would believe therein. Say: PORTENTS ARE WITH GOD ONLY... And though We should send down the angels unto them, and the dead should speak unto them, and We should gather against them all things in array, THEY WOULD NOT BELIEVE unless God so willed. In as ONE PASSAGE because it answers the demand for miracles and then says a miracle would not settle it, which is the text's own position on signs.
- 04 29:50 And they say: why are not portents sent down upon him from his Lord? Say: PORTENTS ARE WITH GOD ONLY, AND I AM BUT A PLAIN WARNER. In because it is the standard reply and it is repeated so often that it becomes the Prophet's stated job description.
- 05 6:107 Had God willed, they had not been idolatrous. WE HAVE NOT SET THEE AS A KEEPER OVER THEM, NOR ART THOU RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM. In because it removes responsibility as well as power.
- 06 88:21–22 So remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer. THOU ART NOT AT ALL A WARDER OVER THEM. In as ONE PASSAGE because it states the positive role and its limit in two lines.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The denials in this study are more thorough than most readers expect, and the argument in 7:188 is the one to remember.
Asked about the unseen, the Prophet is instructed to say: I HAVE NO POWER TO BENEFIT OR TO HURT MYSELF, save as God wills - and then, HAD I KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNSEEN I SHOULD HAVE ABUNDANCE OF WEALTH AND ADVERSITY WOULD NOT TOUCH ME. The proof offered that he does not have hidden knowledge is that he is not rich and not spared trouble. It is an argument from his visible circumstances, and it is almost wry.
46:9 goes further: I KNOW NOT WHAT WILL BE DONE WITH ME OR WITH YOU. Not merely ignorant of the world's secrets - ignorant of his own outcome.
On miracles, the reply is fixed and repeated so often that eight near-identical verses are recorded as drops: PORTENTS ARE WITH GOD ONLY, AND I AM BUT A PLAIN WARNER.
6:109-111 is the passage that explains why the demand is refused. People swear that a sign would convince them, and the answer is that IF the angels came and THE DEAD SPOKE and everything were gathered before them, THEY STILL WOULD NOT BELIEVE. The text's position is that the demand for a miracle is not really a request for evidence.
6:107 and 88:22 remove responsibility as well as capacity: thou art not a keeper over them, NOT A WARDER.
The study What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet Muhammad? reached the same conclusion from a different set - the verses naming him are mostly about limits. These are the verses in which he states them himself.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 7:188, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

6:111 111. Ir net jei Mes būtume nuleidę jiems angelus ir mirusieji būtų kalbėję jiems, ir Mes būtume surinkę kartu viską priešais jų pačių akis, jie nebūtų patikėję, nebent Allahas būtų to norėjęs, tačiau dauguma jų elgėsi neišmanančiai.

Do not insult those they call upon besides God, lest they insult God out of hostility and ignorance. We made attractive to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them of what they used to do.

Likewise, We have assigned for every prophet an enemy-human and jinn devils-inspiring one another with fancy words in order to deceive. But had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. So leave them to their fabrications.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Thou couldst not recite before this any book, nor write it with thy right hand, for in that case those who deem it vain would have doubted
Thou didst not recite any book (of revelation) before it: with that right hand of thine thou didst not transcribe one: else might they who treat it as a vain thing have justly doubted
Thou couldest not read any book before this; neither couldest thou write it with thy right hand: Then had the gainsayers justly doubted of the divine original thereof

In fact, it is clear signs in the hearts of those given knowledge. No one renounce Our signs except the unjust.
But it is clear revelations in the hearts of those who have been given knowledge, and none deny Our revelations save wrong-doers
Nay, but it is evident signs in the breasts of those who are endued with knowledge, and none but the unjust would gainsay our signs
But it is a clear sign in the hearts of those whom "the knowledge" hath reached. None except the wicked reject our signs
But the same is evident signs in the breasts of those who have received understanding: For none reject our signs, except the unjust

We thus diversify the revelations, lest they say, "You have studied," and to clarify them for people who know.
Thus do We display Our revelations that they may say (unto thee, Muhammad): "Thou hast studied," and that We may make (it) clear for people who have knowledge
Thus do we turn about the signs, that they may say, 'Thou hast studied,' and that we may explain to those who know
Thus variously do we apply our signs, that they may say, "Thou hast studied deep:" and that to people of understanding we may make them clear
And thus do We explain the Signs in various ways that the truth may become established and that they may say, 'Thou hast read out what thou hast learnt' and that We may explain it to a people who have no knowledge

Do not insult those they call upon besides God, lest they insult God out of hostility and ignorance. We made attractive to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them of what they used to do.
Revile not those unto whom they pray beside Allah lest they wrongfully revile Allah through ignorance. Thus unto every nation have We made their deed seem fair. Then unto their Lord is their return, and He will tell them what they used to do
Do not abuse those who call on other than God, for then they may abuse God openly in their ignorance. So do we make seemly to every nation their work, then unto their Lord is their return, and He will inform them of what they have done
Revile not those whom they call on beside God, lest they, in their ignorance, despitefully revile Him. Thus have we planned out their actions for every people; then shall they return to their Lord, and He will declare to them what those actions have been

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 7:188, 46:9, 6:109-111, 29:50, 6:107, 88:21-22, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - i + have + no + power + to + benefit + nor + to + hurt; had + i + knowledge + of + the + unseen; i + am + only + a + warner; thou + art + not + a + warder + over + them; portents + are + with + god + only. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 9 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 6:93 - about false claimants; 15:89 - near-identical to 26:115, 38:65, 38:70, 67:26 - the formula recurs and one instance is kept; 22:49 - near-identical; 26:115 - near-identical; 27:92 - the subject is responsibility for oneself; 38:65 - near-identical; 38:70 - near-identical; 39:41 - near-identical to 88:22, which is kept; 67:26 - near-identical.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
