What does the Qur'an say about religious freedom and 'no compulsion'?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:256 THERE IS NO COMPULSION IN RELIGION. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in God hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. In because it is the verse, and because the reason given is epistemic - the way is now clear, so force is beside the point. ALSO CARRIED by the study Does "no compulsion in religion" still stand - and is cancellation a question the verse asks?, which handles the claim that it was cancelled.
  2. 02 10:99 And if thy Lord willed, all who are in the earth would have believed together. WOULDST THOU COMPEL MEN UNTIL THEY ARE BELIEVERS? In because it puts compulsion as a rhetorical question to the Prophet and treats the answer as obvious. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's grief for those who wouldn't believe?, with a different reason there.
  3. 03 18:29 Say: it is the truth from your Lord. THEN WHOSOEVER WILL, LET HIM BELIEVE, AND WHOSOEVER WILL, LET HIM DISBELIEVE. In because it is the sharpest statement of choice in the book. ALSO CARRIED by the study Does the Qur'an teach predestination or free will?, with a different reason there.
  4. 04 109:1–6 Say: O disbelievers, I worship not that which ye worship, nor worship ye that which I worship... UNTO YOU YOUR RELIGION, AND UNTO ME MY RELIGION. In as ONE PASSAGE because the whole surah is one statement and its last line is the settlement.
  5. 05 88:21–22 So remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer. THOU ART NOT AT ALL A WARDER OVER THEM. In because it denies the enforcing role. ALSO CARRIED by What is the Prophet's role in the Qur'an - warner and bringer of good news? and the study What could and couldn't the Prophet do - miracles, the unseen?, with different reasons there.
  6. 06 42:48 But if they are averse, WE HAVE NOT SENT THEE AS A WARDER OVER THEM. Thine is only to convey the message. In because it states the same limit and adds what the role positively is.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Six verses, and they are unusually consistent.

2:256 states it: THERE IS NO COMPULSION IN RELIGION. And the reason given is not tolerance as a value - it is that THE RIGHT DIRECTION IS NOW DISTINCT FROM ERROR. The case being made is that once the matter is clear, force has no work to do.

The study Does "no compulsion in religion" still stand - and is cancellation a question the verse asks? addresses the claim that this verse was cancelled by later ones, and finds that claim resting on an abrogation doctrine the text says very little about.

10:99 puts the alternative as a question and expects the answer no: if God had willed, everyone on earth would have believed - WOULDST THOU COMPEL MEN UNTIL THEY ARE BELIEVERS? Universal belief is described as achievable by God and not pursued, which is the strongest argument in the set.

18:29 is the most direct: THEN WHOSOEVER WILL, LET HIM BELIEVE, AND WHOSOEVER WILL, LET HIM DISBELIEVE. Both branches, in an imperative.

109 settles it as a relationship. Six verses of careful separation, ending: UNTO YOU YOUR RELIGION, AND UNTO ME MY RELIGION.

And twice the Prophet is told he has no enforcing role at all: 88:22 and 42:48 both say THOU ART NOT A WARDER OVER THEM, and 42:48 adds THINE IS ONLY TO CONVEY THE MESSAGE.

What this study does not do is reconcile these with the fighting verses. That work is done in the studies Does the Qur'an tell Muslims to kill unbelievers wherever they find them? and Does the Qur'an call for holy war? and in the studies What does the Qur'an say about self-defence versus aggression? and What does the Qur'an say about justice toward non-Muslims?, all of which find the fighting verses conditioned on aggression rather than on belief.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:256, widening across 6 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation

6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Allah is the Protecting Guardian of those who believe. He bringeth them out of darkness into light. As for those who disbelieve, their patrons are false deities. They bring them out of light into darkness. Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein

Edward Henry Palmer1880 God is the patron of those who believe, He brings them forth from darkness into light. But those who misbelieve, their patrons are Taghut, these bring them forth from light to darkness,- fellows of the Fire, they dwell therein for aye

John Medows Rodwell1861 God is the patron of believers: He shall bring them out of darkness into light: As to those who believe not, their patrons are Thagout: they shall bring them out of light into darkness: they shall be given over to the fire: they shall abide therein for ever

George Sale1734 God is the patron of those who believe; he shall lead them out of darkness into light: But as to those who believe not, their patrons are Tagut(false gods); they shall lead them from the light into darkness; they shall be the companions of hell fire, they shall remain therein for ever

Talal Itani2012 Have you not considered him who argued with Abraham about his Lord, because God had given him sovereignty? Abraham said, "My Lord is He who gives life and causes death." He said, "I give life and cause death." Abraham said, "God brings the sun from the East, so bring it from the West," so the blasphemer was confounded. God does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Bethink thee of him who had an argument with Abraham about his Lord, because Allah had given him the kingdom; how, when Abraham said: My Lord is He Who giveth life and causeth death, he answered: I give life and cause death. Abraham said: Lo! Allah causeth the sun to rise in the East, so do thou cause it to come up from the West. Thus was the disbeliever abashed. And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk

Edward Henry Palmer1880 Do you not look at him who disputed with Abraham about his Lord, that God had given him the kingdom? When Abraham said, 'My Lord is He who giveth life and death,' he said, 'I give life and death.' Abraham said, 'But verily, God brings the sun from the east, do thou then bring it from the west?' And he who misbelieved was dumbfounded, for God does not guide unjust folk

John Medows Rodwell1861 Hast thou not thought on him who disputed with Abraham about his Lord, because God had given him the kingdom? When Abraham said, "My Lord is He who maketh alive and cause to die:" He said, "It is I who make alive and cause to die!" Abraham said, "Since God bringeth the sun from the East, do thou, then, bring it from the West." The infidel was confounded; for God guideth not the evil doers

George Sale1734 Hast thou not considered him who disputed with Abraham concerning his Lord, because God had given him the kingdom? When Abraham said, my Lord is he who giveth life, and killeth: He answered, I give life, and I kill. Abraham said, verily God bringeth the sun from the east, now do thou bring it from the west. Whereupon the infidel was confounded; for God directeth not the ungoldly people

Και αν ζητήσουν βοήθεια (ανακούφιση ή νερό), θα τους δοθεί νερό σαν βραστό βρώμικο λάδι που θα κάψει τα πρόσωπά τους. Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

But if they turn away-We did not send you as a guardian over them. Your only duty is communication. Whenever We let man taste mercy from Us, he rejoices in it; but when misfortune befalls them, as a consequence of what their hands have perpetrated, man turns blasphemous.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

But if they are averse, We have not sent thee as a warder over them. Thine is only to convey (the message). And lo! when We cause man to taste of mercy from Us he exulteth therefor. And if some evil striketh them because of that which their own hands have sent before, then lo! man is an ingrate

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

But if they turn aside, we have not sent thee to them as a guardian, thou hast only thy message to preach. And, verily, when we have made man taste of mercy from us he rejoices therein; but if there befall them an evil for what their hands have done before - then, verily, man is ungrateful

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

But if they turn aside from thee, yet we have not sent thee to be their guardian. 'Tis thine but to preach. When we cause man to taste our gifts of mercy, he rejoiceth in it; but if for their by-gone handy-work evil betide them, then lo! is man ungrateful

George Sale published 1734

But if those to whom thou preachest turn aside from thy admonitions, verily We have not sent thee to be a guardian over them: Thy duty is preaching only. When We cause man to taste mercy from Us, he rejoiceth thereat: But if evil befall them, for that which their hands have formerly committed, verily man becometh ungrateful

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:256, 10:99, 18:29, 109:1-6, 88:21-22, 42:48, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - no + compulsion + in + religion; wouldst + thou + compel + men; unto + you + your + religion + and + unto + me; thou + art + not + at + all + a + warder; let + him + who + will + believe. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 5 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:282 - matched incidentally; 4:25 - marriage law; 5:2 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about justice toward non-Muslims?; 5:41 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about those who mocked or harmed the Prophet - and what penalty does it not prescribe?; 58:9 - matched incidentally.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
