Does the Qur'an reward a good intention even when the deed isn't done?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:225 God will not take you to task for that which is unintentional in your oaths, BUT HE WILL TAKE YOU TO TASK FOR THAT WHICH YOUR HEARTS HAVE GARNERED. In because it makes the heart's content the thing accounted for, which is the premise of the whole question.
  2. 02 33:5 Proclaim their real parentage. That will be more equitable in the sight of God. And if ye know not their fathers, then they are your brethren in the faith. AND THERE IS NO SIN FOR YOU IN THE MISTAKES THAT YE MAKE UNINTENTIONALLY, BUT WHAT YOUR HEARTS PURPOSE. In because it states the rule in its clearest form - liability follows purpose, not outcome. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about a child's lineage and naming?, with a different reason there.
  3. 03 4:100 Whoso forsaketh his home in the cause of God, he will find much refuge and abundance in the earth, and WHOSO FORSAKETH HIS HOME, A FUGITIVE UNTO GOD AND HIS MESSENGER, AND DEATH OVERTAKETH HIM, HIS REWARD IS THEN INCUMBENT ON GOD. In because it is the one place the Qur'an describes a person who sets out to do something, dies before completing it, and is credited with it in full.
  4. 04 9:91–92 Not unto the weak nor unto the sick nor unto those who can find naught to spend is any fault, SO LONG AS THEY ARE TRUE TO GOD AND HIS MESSENGER... nor unto those to whom, when they came to thee that thou shouldst mount them, thou saidst: I cannot find whereon to mount you. THEY TURNED BACK WITH EYES FLOWING WITH TEARS, FOR SORROW THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND THE MEANS TO SPEND. In as ONE PASSAGE because it describes people who wanted to act, could not, and are explicitly cleared - and the detail about the tears is the text's own evidence of the intention.
  5. 05 5:89 God will not take you to task for that which is unintentional in your oaths, but He will take you to task for the oaths which ye swear in earnest. In because it repeats 2:225's distinction in a legal passage. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about expiation for a broken oath?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The Qur'an does not say in so many words that an unperformed good intention is rewarded. What it does say is close, and 4:100 is the nearest thing to a direct answer.

Whoever leaves his home as a fugitive to God and His messenger AND DEATH OVERTAKES HIM - HIS REWARD IS THEN INCUMBENT ON GOD. He set out. He did not arrive. The reward is described as owed.

9:91-92 is the other case and it is the more moving of the two. People who were too weak, too ill, or too poor to go are cleared - SO LONG AS THEY ARE TRUE TO GOD AND HIS MESSENGER. And then a group who came asking for mounts and were told there were none: THEY TURNED BACK WITH EYES FLOWING WITH TEARS, FOR SORROW THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND THE MEANS TO SPEND. The Qur'an records their tears, and it records them as the evidence that the intention was real.

The principle underneath is stated twice. 2:225 and 5:89: God does not take you to task for what is UNINTENTIONAL, but for WHAT YOUR HEARTS HAVE GARNERED. And 33:5 puts it plainest: there is no sin in mistakes made unintentionally, BUT WHAT YOUR HEARTS PURPOSE.

So the text's rule is that liability follows purpose rather than outcome - and it applies that rule in both directions, clearing the unintended fault and crediting the prevented good.

The famous in which an intended good deed is written as one good deed even if not done is not in the Qur'an. No hadith collection has cleared the rights audit, so this study cannot report or grade it - but a reader should know the Qur'anic material above exists and is not the same claim.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:225, widening across 5 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Allah hath not assigned unto any man two hearts within his body, nor hath He made your wives whom ye declare (to be your mothers) your mothers, nor hath He made those whom ye claim (to be your sons) your sons. This is but a saying of your mouths. But Allah saith the truth and He showeth the way

Talal Itani2012 The Prophet is more caring of the believers than they are of themselves, and his wives are mothers to them. And blood-relatives are closer to one another in God's Book than the believers or the emigrants, though you should do good to your friends. That is inscribed in the Book.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 The Prophet is closer to the believers than their selves, and his wives are (as) their mothers. And the owners of kinship are closer one to another in the ordinance of Allah than (other) believers and the fugitives (who fled from Mecca), except that ye should do kindness to your friends. This is written in the Book (of nature)

Edward Henry Palmer1880 The prophet is nearer of kin to the believers than themselves, and his wives are their mothers. And blood relations are nearer in kin to each other by the Book of God than the believers and those who fled; only your doing kindness to your kindred, that is traced in the Book

John Medows Rodwell1861 Nearer of kin to the faithful is the Prophet, than they are to their own selves. His wives are their mothers. According to the Book of God, they who are related by blood, are nearer the one to the other than other believers, and than those who have fled their country for the cause of God: but whatever kindness ye shew to your kindred, shall be noted down in the Book

George Sale1734 The prophet is nigher unto the true believers than their own souls; and his wives are their mothers. Those who are related by consanguinity are nigher of kin the one of them unto the others, according to the book of God, than the other true believers, and the Mohajerun: Unless that ye do what is fitting and reasonable to your relations in general. Anyone who emigrates for the sake of God will find on earth many places of refuge, and plentitude. Anyone who leaves his home, emigrating to God and His Messenger, and then is overtaken by death, his compensation falls on God. God is Forgiver, Most Merciful.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

Whoso migrateth for the cause of Allah will find much refuge and abundance in the earth, and whoso forsaketh his home, a fugitive unto Allah and His messenger, and death overtaketh him, his reward is then incumbent on Allah. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

Whosoever flees in the way of God shall find in the earth many a spacious refuge; and he who goes forth from his house, fleeing unto God and His prophet, and then death catches him up,- his hire devolves on God, and God is forgiving and merciful

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

Whoever flieth his country for the cause of God, will find in the earth many under like compulsion, and abundant resources; and if any one shall quit his home and fly to God and his apostle, and then death overtake him, - his reward from God is sure: for God is Gracious, Merciful

George Sale published 1734

Whosoever flieth from his country for the sake of God's true religion, shall find in the earth many forced to do the same, and plenty of provisions. And whoever departeth from his house, and flieth unto God and his apostle, if death overtake him in the way, God will be obliged to reward him, for God is gracious and merciful

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Then, when they have done their prostrations, let them withdraw to the rear, and let another group, that have not prayed yet, come forward and pray with you; and let them take their precautions and their weapons. Those who disbelieve would like you to neglect your weapons and your equipment, so they can attack you in a single assault. You commit no error, if you are hampered by rain or are sick, by putting down your weapons; but take precautions. Indeed, God has prepared for the disbelievers a demeaning punishment.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And when thou (O Muhammad) art among them and arrangest (their) worship for them, let only a party of them stand with thee (to worship) and let them take their arms. Then when they have performed their prostrations let them fall to the rear and let another party come that hath not worshipped and let them worship with thee, and let them take their precaution and their arms. Those who disbelieve long for you to neglect your arms and your baggage that they may attack you once for all. It is no sin for you to lay aside your arms, if rain impedeth you or ye are sick. But take your precaution. Lo! Allah prepareth for the disbelievers shameful punishment

Edward Henry Palmer1880 When thou art amongst them, and standest up to pray with them, then let a party of them stand up with thee, and let them take their arms; and when they adore, let them go behind you, and let another party who have not yet prayed come forward and pray with thee; and let them take their precautions and their arms. Fain would those who misbelieve that ye were careless of your arms and your baggage, that they might turn upon you with a single turning. And it is no crime to you if ye be annoyed with rain or be sick, that ye lay down your arms; but take your precautions,- verily, God has prepared for those who misbelieve a shameful woe

John Medows Rodwell1861 And when thou, O apostle! shalt be among them, and shalt pray with them, then let a party of them rise up with thee, but let them take their arms; and when they shall have made their prostrations, let them retire to your rear: then let another party that hath not prayed come forward, and let them pray with you; but let them take their precautions and their arms. Pleased would the infidels be for you to neglect your arms and your baggage, that they might turn upon you at once! And it shall be no crime in you to lay down your arms if rain annoy you, or if ye be sick. But take your precautions. Verily, God hath made ready a shameful torment for the infidels

George Sale1734 But when thou, O prophet, shalt be among them, and shalt pray with them, let a party of them arise to prayer with thee, and let them take their arms; and when they shall have worshipped, let them stand behind you, and let another party come that hath not prayed, and let them pray with thee, and let them be cautious and take their arms. The unbelievers would that ye should neglect your arms and your baggage while ye pray, that they might turn upon you at once. It shall be no crime in you, if ye be incommoded by rain, or be sick, that ye lay down your arms; but take your necessary precaution: God hath prepared for the unbelievers an ignominious punishment

God does not hold you accountable for your unintended oaths, but He holds you accountable for your binding oaths. The atonement for it is by feeding ten needy people from the average of what you feed your families, or by clothing them, or by freeing a slave. Anyone who lacks the means shall fast for three days. That is the atonement for breaking your oaths when you have sworn them. So keep your oaths. Thus God makes clear His Revelations to you, that you may be grateful.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

Allah will not take you to task for that which is unintentional in your oaths, but He will take you to task for the oaths which ye swear in earnest. The expiation thereof is the feeding of ten of the needy with the average of that wherewith ye feed your own folk, or the clothing of them, or the liberation of a slave, and for him who findeth not (the wherewithal to do so) then a three days' fast. This is the expiation of your oaths when ye have sworn; and keep your oaths. Thus Allah expoundeth unto you His revelations in order that ye may give thanks

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

God will not catch you up for a casual word in your oaths, but He will catch you up for having what ye make deliberate oaths about; and the expiation thereof is to feed ten poor men with the middling food ye feed your families withal, or to clothe them, or to free a neck; but he who has not the means, then let him fast three days. That is the expiation of your oaths, when ye have sworn to keep your oaths; thus does God explain to you His signs, - haply ye may be grateful

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

God will not punish you for a mistaken word in your oaths: but he will punish you in regard to an oath taken seriously. Its expiation shall be to feed ten poor persons with such middling food as ye feed your own families with, or to clothe them; or to set free a captive. But he who cannot find means, shall fast three days. This is the expiation of your oaths when ye shall have sworn. Keep then your oaths. Thus God maketh his signs clear to you, that ye may give thanks

George Sale published 1734

God will not take you to task for such of your oaths as are vain, but He will take you to task for breaking the oaths which you take in earnest. The expiation thereof, then, is the feeding of ten poor persons with such average food as you feed your families with, or the clothing of them or the freeing of a slave. But whoso finds not the means shall fast for three days. That is the expiation of your oaths when you have sworn. And keep your oaths. Thus does God explain to you His Signs that you may be grateful

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

E mantenete i vostri giuramenti. Così Allāh vi mostra i Suoi precetti, perché possiate esserGli grati.

Yeminlerinizi tutun. Şükredesiniz diye Allah, ayetlerini işte böyle açıklıyor.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:225, 33:5, 4:100, 9:91-92, 5:89, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - god + will + not + take + you + to + task + for + that + which + is + unintentional; that + which + your + hearts + have + garnered; no + sin + if + ye + make + a + mistake; what + your + hearts + purpose. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

al-Tabari

A scholar who wrote Jami' al-bayan, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 923 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.

Ibn Kathir

A scholar who wrote Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 1373 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.
