Whoever obeys the Messenger is obeying God. And whoever turns away-We did not send you as a watcher over them.
What does the Qur'an say about obeying the Prophet?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:80 WHOSO OBEYETH THE MESSENGER OBEYETH GOD, and whoso turneth away: We have not sent thee as a warder over them. In because it is the strongest identification of the two obediences, and because the same verse immediately limits his role over those who refuse.
- 02 59:7 AND WHATSOEVER THE MESSENGER GIVETH YOU, TAKE IT; AND WHATSOEVER HE FORBIDDETH, ABSTAIN FROM IT. In because it is the widest grant, and because its setting is the distribution of property rather than doctrine - a fact usually left out.
- 03 33:36 AND IT BECOMETH NOT A BELIEVING MAN OR A BELIEVING WOMAN, WHEN GOD AND HIS MESSENGER HAVE DECIDED AN AFFAIR FOR THEM, THAT THEY SHOULD CLAIM ANY SAY IN THEIR AFFAIR. In because it addresses men and women identically, and because what it forecloses is a claim of choice after a decision.
- 04 4:59 Obey God, and obey the messenger and those of you who are in authority; and if ye have a dispute concerning any matter, REFER IT TO GOD AND THE MESSENGER. In because it ranks the three and provides the referral. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about obeying those in authority?, with a different reason there.
- 05 4:65 But nay, by thy Lord, they will not believe until they make thee judge of what is in dispute between them AND FIND WITHIN THEMSELVES NO DISLIKE OF THAT WHICH THOU DECIDEST, and submit with full submission. In because it requires not merely compliance but the absence of inward resentment, which is the most demanding verse in the set.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five verses, and they are among the strongest in the Qur'an on any subject.
4:80 identifies the two obediences outright: WHOSO OBEYS THE MESSENGER OBEYS GOD. And then, in the same verse, a limit that is easy to miss - and whoso turns away, WE HAVE NOT SENT THEE AS A WARDER OVER THEM. The authority is total in what it commands and carries no power of enforcement.
59:7 is the widest grant: WHATSOEVER THE MESSENGER GIVETH YOU, TAKE IT; WHATSOEVER HE FORBIDDETH, ABSTAIN. A great deal has been built on that sentence, and a reader should know its immediate setting is the distribution of captured property - the verse is explaining who gets a share of the spoils of Banu Nadir. Whether the clause is confined to that or general is exactly the kind of question the commentators worked on, and no has cleared the rights audit.
33:36 forecloses discretion after a decision, and it does so for BELIEVING MEN AND BELIEVING WOMEN in the same clause.
4:65 is the most demanding. It is not enough to accept his judgment: they must FIND WITHIN THEMSELVES NO DISLIKE of it and submit fully. Inward assent is required.
4:59 supplies the structure - God, then the messenger, then those in authority - and provides the route past a human ruler by referral.
Read with What does the Qur'an say about following the Prophet's example?, the picture is a strong obligation to obey with the CONTENT of the obedience largely outside the Qur'an. What he commanded and forbade is transmitted in , and this platform holds none.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:80, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Whether you cut down a tree, or leave it standing on its trunk, it is by God's will. He will surely disgrace the sinners.
Whatsoever palm-trees ye cut down or left standing on their roots, it was by Allah's leave, in order that He might confound the evil-livers
What palm trees ye did cut down or what ye left standing upon their roots was by God's permission, and to disgrace the workers of abomination
Your cutting down some of their palm trees and sparing others was by God's permission, and to put the wicked to shame
What palm-trees ye cut down, or left standing on their roots, were so cut down or left by the will of God; and that He might disgrace the wicked doers

And those who, before them, had settled in the homeland, and had accepted faith. They love those who emigrated to them, and find no hesitation in their hearts in helping them. They give them priority over themselves, even if they themselves are needy. Whoever is protected from his natural greed-it is they who are the successful.
Those who entered the city and the faith before them love those who flee unto them for refuge, and find in their breasts no need for that which hath been given them, but prefer (the fugitives) above themselves though poverty become their lot. And whoso is saved from his own avarice - such are they who are successful
And those who were settled in the abode and the faith before them, love those who fled to them; and they do not find in their breasts a need of what has been given to them; preferring them to themselves, even though there be poverty amongst them; and whoso is preserved from his own covetousness, these are the prosperous
They of Medina who had been in possession of their abodes and embraced the faith before them, cherish those who take refuge with them; and they find not in their breasts any desire for what hath fallen to their share: they prefer them before themselves, though poverty be their own lot. And with such as are preserved from their own covetousness shall it be well
And they who quietly possessed the town of Medina, and professed the faith without molestation, before them, love him who hath fled unto them, and find in their breasts no want of that which is given the Mohajerin, but prefer them before themselves, although there be indigence among them. And whoso is preserved from the covetousness of his own soul, those shall surely prosper

When you said to him whom God had blessed, and you had favored, "Keep your wife to yourself, and fear God." But you hid within yourself what God was to reveal. And you feared the people, but it was God you were supposed to fear. Then, when Zaid ended his relationship with her, We gave her to you in marriage, that there may be no restriction for believers regarding the wives of their adopted sons, when their relationship has ended. The command of God was fulfilled.
And when thou saidst unto him on whom Allah hath conferred favour and thou hast conferred favour: Keep thy wife to thyself, and fear Allah. And thou didst hide in thy mind that which Allah was to bring to light, and thou didst fear mankind whereas Allah hath a better right that thou shouldst fear Him. So when Zeyd had performed that necessary formality (of divorce) from her, We gave her unto thee in marriage, so that (henceforth) there may be no sin for believers in respect of wives of their adopted sons, when the latter have performed the necessary formality (of release) from them. The commandment of Allah must be fulfilled
And when thou didst say to him God had shown favour to and thou hadst shown favour to, 'Keep thy wife to thyself and fear God;' and thou didst conceal in thy soul what God was about to display; and didst fear men, though God is more deserving that thou shouldst fear Him; and when Zaid had fulfilled his desire of her we did wed thee to her that there should be no hindrance to the believers in the matter of the wives of their adopted sons when they have fulfilled their desire of them: and so God's bidding to be done
And, remember, when thou saidst to him unto whom God had shewn favour, and to whom thou also hadst shewn favour, "Keep thy wife to thyself, and fear God;" and thou didst hide in thy mind what God would bring to light. and thou didst fear man; but more right had it been to fear God. And when Zaid had settled concerning her to divorce her, we married her to thee, that it might not be a crime in the faithful to marry the wives of their adopted sons, when they have settled the affair concerning them. And the behest of God is to be performed
And remember when thou saidst to him unto whom God had been gracious, and on whom thou also hadst conferred favours, keep thy wife to thy self, and fear God: And thou didst conceal that in thy mind which God had determined to discover, and didst fear men; whereas it was more just that thou shouldst fear God. But when Zeid had determined the matter concerning her, and had resolved to divorce her, we joined her in marriage unto thee; lest a crime should be charged on the true believers, in marrying the wives of their adopted sons, when they have determined the matter concerning them: And the command of God is to be performed

There is no blame on the Prophet regarding what God has ordained for him. Such is the pattern of God among those who passed before. The command of God is an absolute decree.
There is no reproach for the Prophet in that which Allah maketh his due. That was Allah's way with those who passed away of old - and the commandment of Allah is certain destiny
There is no hindrance to the prophet about what God has ordained for him;-(such was) the course of God with those who have passed away before,- and God's bidding is a decreed decree
No blame attacheth to the prophet where God hath given him a permission. Such was the way of God with those prophets who flourished before thee; for God's behest is a fixed decree
No crime is to be charged on the prophet, as to what God hath allowed him, conformable to the ordinance of God with regard to those who preceded him, -- for the command of God is a determinate decree

And when it is said to them, "Come to what God has revealed, and to the Messenger," you see the hypocrites shunning you completely.
And when it is said unto them: Come unto that which Allah hath revealed and unto the messenger, thou seest the hypocrites turn from thee with aversion
And when it is said to them, 'Come round to what God has sent down and unto the Apostle,' thou seest the hypocrites turning from thee, turning away
And when it is said to them, "Accede to that which God hath sent down, and to the apostle," thou seest the hypocrites avert them from thee with utter aversion
And when it is said unto them, come unto the book which God hath sent down, and to the apostle; thou seest the ungodly turn aside from thee, with great aversion

But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they call you to arbitrate in their disputes, and then find within themselves no resentment regarding your decisions, and submit themselves completely.

But nay, by thy Lord, they will not believe (in truth) until they make thee judge of what is in dispute between them and find within themselves no dislike of that which thou decidest, and submit with full submission
But no! by thy Lord! they will not believe, until they have made thee judge of what they differ on; then they will not find in themselves aught to hinder what thou hast decreed, and they will submit with submission
And they will not - I swear by thy Lord - they will not believe, until they have set thee up as judge between them on points where they differ. Then shall they not find in their own minds any difficulty in thy decisions, and shall submit with entire submission
And by thy Lord they will not perfectly believe, until they make thee judge of their controversies; and shall not afterwards find in their own minds any hardship in what thou shalt determine, but shall acquiesce therein with entire submission

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. They are those whom God knows what is in their hearts. So ignore them, and admonish them, and say to them concerning themselves penetrating words.
Those are they, the secrets of whose hearts Allah knoweth. So oppose them and admonish them, and address them in plain terms about their souls
These, God knows what is in their hearts. Turn thou away from them and admonish them, and speak to them into their souls with a searching word
These are they whose hearts God knoweth. Therefore break off from them, and warn them, speak words that may penetrate their souls
God knoweth what is in the hearts of these men; therefore let them alone, and admonish them, and speak unto them a word which may affect their souls

We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by God's leave. Had they, when they wronged themselves, come to you, and prayed for God's forgiveness, and the Messenger had prayed for their forgiveness, they would have found God Relenting and Merciful.
We sent no messenger save that he should be obeyed by Allah's leave. And if, when they had wronged themselves, they had but come unto thee and asked forgiveness of Allah, and asked forgiveness of the messenger, they would have found Allah Forgiving, Merciful
We have never sent an apostle save that he should be obeyed by the permission of God; and if they, when they have wronged themselves, come to thee and ask pardon of God, and the Apostle asks pardon for them, then they will find God easy to be turned, compassionate
We have not sent any apostle but to be obeyed, it God so will: but if they, after they have sinned to their own hurt by unbelief, come to thee and ask pardon of God, and the apostle ask pardon for them, they shall surely find that God is He who turneth unto man, Merciful
We have not sent any apostle, but that he might be obeyed by the permission of God: But if they, after they have injured their own souls, come unto thee, and ask pardon of God, and the apostle ask pardon for them, they shall surely find God easy to be reconciled and merciful

Had We decreed for them: "Kill yourselves," or "Leave your homes," they would not have done it, except for a few of them. But had they done what they were instructed to do, it would have been better for them, and a firmer confirmation.
And if We had decreed for them: Lay down your lives or go forth from your dwellings, but few of them would have done it; though if they did what they are exhorted to do it would be better for them, and more strengthening
But had we prescribed for them, 'Kill yourselves, or go ye forth out of your houses,' they would not have done it, save only a few of them; but had they done what they are admonished, then it would have been better for them, and a more firm assurance
Had we laid down such a law for them as "Kill yourselves, or abandon your dwellings," but few of them would have done it. But had they done that to which they were exhorted, better and it been for them, and stronger for the confirmation of their faith
And if we had commanded them, saying, slay your selves, or depart from your houses; they would not have done it, except a few of them. And if they had done what they were admonished, it would certainly have been better for them, and more efficacious for confirming their faith

The translators word this verse differently
And We would have given them from Our presence a rich compensation.
And then We should bestow upon them from Our presence an immense reward
And then we would surely have brought them from ourselves a mighty hire
In that case we had surely given them from ourself a great recompense
and we should then have surely given them in our sight an exceeding great reward
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:80, 59:7, 33:36, 4:59, 4:65, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - whoso + obeyeth + the + messenger + obeyeth + god; what + the + messenger + giveth + you + take + it; not + for + a + believing + man + when + god + and + his + messenger + have + decided; obey + god + and + the + messenger + and + those + in + authority. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
