God does not wrong the people in the least, but the people wrong their own selves.
What does the Qur'an say about oppression (zulm) and its consequences?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 10:44 Lo, GOD WRONGETH NOT MANKIND IN AUGHT; BUT MANKIND WRONG THEMSELVES. Each translation repeats one verb here - wrong, or deal unjustly in Sale - denying it of God and saying it of people themselves.
- 02 42:40–42 The guerdon of an ill-deed is an ill the like thereof. But whosoever pardoneth and amendeth, his wage is the affair of God... AND WHOSO DEFENDETH HIMSELF AFTER HE HATH SUFFERED WRONG - for such, there is no way of blame against them. The way of blame is only against those who oppress mankind. In as ONE PASSAGE because it holds three things together: proportionate response, the option of pardon, and an explicit clearing of anyone who defends themselves.
- 03 3:140 If ye have received a blow, the people have received a blow the like thereof. These are the vicissitudes We cause to follow one another for mankind... AND GOD LOVETH NOT WRONG-DOERS. In because it sets a reverse in war inside a pattern and still refuses the wrongdoers.
- 04 22:71 And they worship instead of God that for which He hath sent down no warrant... AND FOR WRONG-DOERS THERE IS NO HELPER. In because it states the consequence in its shortest form.
- 05 14:42–43 Deem not that God is unaware of what the wicked do. HE ONLY GIVETH THEM A RESPITE till a day when eyes will stare in terror, as they come hurrying on in fear, their heads upraised, their gaze returning not to them, and their hearts as air. In as ONE PASSAGE because it addresses the reader's real objection - that oppressors go unpunished - and answers it with a delay rather than a denial.
- 06 28:59 And never did thy Lord destroy the townships till He had raised up in their mother-town a messenger reciting unto them Our revelations; and never did We destroy the townships UNLESS THE FOLK THEREOF WERE EVIL-DOERS. In because it states the condition on which communities are destroyed and names it as wrongdoing rather than unbelief.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six passages, and the one that answers the reader's actual question is 14:42-43.
The objection anyone brings to this subject is that oppressors are not stopped. The text meets it directly: DEEM NOT THAT GOD IS UNAWARE OF WHAT THE WICKED DO. HE ONLY GIVETH THEM A RESPITE. Not a denial that they are getting away with it now - a statement that the delay is deliberate. What follows is four lines describing the eyes, the heads and the hearts of people on the day the respite ends.
10:44 is the theme in one sentence: God wrongs mankind in nothing; MANKIND WRONG THEMSELVES. The same verb, denied of God and asserted of people.
42:40-42 is the most practically useful, because it does three things at once. The recompense for an injury is an injury LIKE IT - proportion, not escalation. Pardon is better and its reward is with God. And then, explicitly: WHOSO DEFENDS HIMSELF AFTER BEING WRONGED, THERE IS NO WAY OF BLAME AGAINST THEM. The passage that praises forgiveness refuses to blame the person who does not forgive. THE WAY OF BLAME IS ONLY AGAINST THOSE WHO OPPRESS MANKIND.
28:59 gives the condition for a community's destruction, and it is worth noting what it says: never destroyed UNLESS THE FOLK THEREOF WERE EVIL-DOERS, and never before a messenger was sent. Wrongdoing, not disbelief, is the stated trigger.
Standing up for those on the receiving end is carried by What does the Qur'an say about standing up for the oppressed?, and the archetype of the oppressor by What does the Qur'an say about tyranny - Pharaoh as the archetype?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 10:44, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

42:40 Galanni hamtuu hamtuma fakkaattuu isheeti. Namni dhiifama godhee, (hariiroos) tolche galanni isaa Rabbi irra jira. Inni (Allaahn) miidhaa hojjattoota hin jaallatu.
42:41 Namni erga miidhamee booda haaloo bahate, isaan sun diliin isaan irra hin jiru.
42:42 Komiin (diliin) kan jiru isaan namoota miidhanii, haqaan ala dachii keessatti daangaa dabran irratti. Isaan sun adabbii laalessaatu isaaniif jira.

And (have ye not) dwelt in the dwellings of those who wronged themselves (of old) and (hath it not) become plain to you how We dealt with them and made examples for you

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Whatever thing you are given is but the material of this world, and its glitter. But what is with God is better, and longer lasting. Do you not comprehend?
And whatsoever ye have been given is a comfort of the life of the world and an ornament thereof; and that which Allah hath is better and more lasting. Have ye then no sense

Is he whom We have promised a fair promise which he will find (true) like him whom We suffer to enjoy awhile the comfort of the life of the world, then on the Day of Resurrection he will be of those arraigned
Is He to whom we have promised a goodly promise, which he shall meet with, like him to whom we have given the enjoyment of the life of this world, and who upon the resurrection day shall be of the arraigned
Shall he then to whom we have promised a goodly promise and who obtaineth it, be as he on whom we have bestowed the enjoyments of this life present, and who on the day of Resurrection shall be brought up for punishment

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 10:44, 42:40-42, 3:140, 22:71, 14:42-43, 28:59, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - god + wrongeth + not + mankind; wronged + them + not + but + they + wronged; for + wrong-doers + there + is + no + helper; we + destroyed + the + townships + when + they + did + wrong; god + loveth + not + wrong-doers. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 3:57 - near-identical closing formula.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. At 10:44, a ranking of this verse above others was removed; the repeated verb it points to is on the page in every translation. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
