What does the Qur'an say about the treatment of prisoners of war?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 47:4 When ye have routed them, THEN MAKING FAST OF BONDS; AND AFTERWARD EITHER GRACE OR RANSOM till the war lay down its burdens. In because it is the governing verse and the two options after capture are release without payment or release for payment. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the ethics of war?, with a different reason there.
  2. 02 8:70–71 O Prophet, say unto those captives who are in your hands: IF GOD KNOWETH ANY GOOD IN YOUR HEARTS HE WILL GIVE YOU BETTER THAN THAT WHICH HATH BEEN TAKEN FROM YOU, AND WILL FORGIVE YOU. In as ONE PASSAGE because the Prophet is instructed to address captives directly and to offer them something, which is the most striking thing in the set.
  3. 03 76:8–9 And feed with food the needy wretch, the orphan AND THE PRISONER, for love of Him, saying: we feed you for the sake of God only. We wish for no reward nor thanks from you. In as ONE PASSAGE because the prisoner is put in the same list as the orphan and the destitute as an object of charity, and 76:9 states the motive. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about caring for the poor and the orphan?, with a different reason there.
  4. 04 8:67–68 It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and God desireth for you the Hereafter. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is a REBUKE about taking captives for ransom, and it complicates the picture rather than completing it, and 47:4 is carried in the same study so the two can be read together.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Four passages, and they do not all point the same way, which is the honest finding.

47:4 is the operative verse and it is remarkably restrictive. After the fighting and the rout: BONDS - and then EITHER GRACE OR RANSOM. Two exits, both of them release. Execution of captives is not offered as an option, and nothing in the verse permits indefinite holding.

76:8 puts THE PRISONER in a list with the orphan and the destitute as someone to be fed - and 76:9 supplies the motive: for the sake of God only, wanting neither reward nor thanks. That is charity owed to a captive by those holding him.

8:70 is the most unexpected. The Prophet is told to SPEAK TO THE CAPTIVES IN HIS HANDS and to tell them that if God knows any good in their hearts, He will give them better than what was taken from them, and forgive them. The instruction is to address them as people with a future.

8:67 is carried because leaving it out would flatter the text. It is a rebuke - IT IS NOT FOR A PROPHET TO HAVE CAPTIVES UNTIL HE HATH MADE SLAUGHTER IN THE LAND - directed at taking prisoners for ransom, with the charge that YE DESIRE THE LURE OF THIS WORLD. Read against 47:4, which permits ransom, it is not obviously consistent, and this study does not reconcile them. Both are carried here so that a reader meets the tension rather than one side of it.

The wider question of slavery and the routes out of it is carried by What routes out of slavery does the Qur'an open? and by the study Does the Qur'an sanction slavery?

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 47:4, widening across 4 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The translators word this verse differently

Talal Itani published 2012

When you encounter those who disbelieve, strike at their necks. Then, when you have routed them, bind them firmly. Then, either release them by grace, or by ransom, until war lays down its burdens. Had God willed, He could have defeated them Himself, but He thus tests some of you by means of others. As for those who are killed in the way of God, He will not let their deeds go to waste.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks until, when ye have routed them, then making fast of bonds; and afterward either grace or ransom till the war lay down its burdens. That (is the ordinance). And if Allah willed He could have punished them (without you) but (thus it is ordained) that He may try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of Allah, He rendereth not their actions vain

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

And when ye meet those who misbelieve - then striking off heads until ye have massacred them, and bind fast the bonds! Then either a free grant (of liberty) or a ransom until the war shall have laid down its burdens. That!- but if God please He would conquer them - but (it is) that He may try some of you by the others. And those who are slain in God's cause, their works shall not go wrong

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

When ye encounter the infidels, strike off their heads till ye have made a great slaughter among them, and of the rest make fast the fetters. And afterwards let there either be free dismissals or ransomings, till the war hath laid down its burdens. Thus do. Were such the pleasure of God, he could himself take vengeance upon them: but He would rather prove the one of you by the other. And whoso fight for the cause of God, their works he will not suffer to miscarry

George Sale published 1734

When ye encounter the unbelievers, strike off their heads, until ye have made a great slaughter among them; and bind them in bonds: And either give them a free dismission afterwards, or exact a ransom; until the war shall have laid down its arms. This shall ye do: Verily if God pleased, He could take vengeance on them, without your assistance; but He commandeth you to fight his battles, that He may prove the one of you by the other. And as to those who fight in defence of God's true religion, God will not suffer their works to perish

Talal Itani2012 Those who believed, and emigrated, and struggled in God's cause with their possessions and their persons, and those who provided shelter and support-these are allies of one another. As for those who believed, but did not emigrate, you owe them no protection, until they have emigrated. But if they ask you for help in religion, you must come to their aid, except against a people with whom you have a treaty. God is Seeing of what you do.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Lo! those who believed and left their homes and strove with their wealth and their lives for the cause of Allah, and those who took them in and helped them: these are protecting friends one of another. And those who believed but did not leave their homes, ye have no duty to protect them till they leave their homes; but if they seek help from you in the matter of religion then it is your duty to help (them) except against a folk between whom and you there is a treaty. Allah is Seer of what ye do

Edward Henry Palmer1880 Verily, those who believe and have fled and fought strenuously with their wealth and persons in God's way, and those who have given refuge and help, these shall be next of kin to each other. But those who believe, but have not fled, ye have naught to do with their claims of kindred, until they flee as well. But if they ask you for aid for religion's sake, then help is due from you, except against a people between whom and you there is an alliance; for God on what ye do doth look

John Medows Rodwell1861 Verily, they who have believed and fled their homes and spent their substance for the cause of God, and they who have taken in the prophet and been helpful to him, shall be near of kin the one to the other. And they who have believed, but have not fled their homes, shall have no rights of kindred with you at all, until they too fly their country. Yet if they seek aid from you on account of the faith, your part it is to give them aid, except against a people between whom and yourselves there shall be a treaty. And God beholdeth your actions

George Sale1734 Moreover they who have believed, and have fled their country, and employed their substance and their persons in fighting for the religion of God, and they who have given the prophet a refuge among them, and have assisted him, these shall be deemed the one nearest of kin to the other. But they who have believed, but have not fled their country, shall have no right of kindred at all with you, until they also fly. Yet if they ask assistance of you on account of religion, it belongeth unto you to give them assistance; except against a people between whom and yourselves there shall be a league subsisting: And God seeth that which ye do

8:73

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And those who disbelieve are protectors one of another - If ye do not so, there will be confusion in the land, and great corruption

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And those who misbelieve, some of them are next of kin to others - unless ye act the same there will be sedition in the land, and great corruption

John Medows Rodwell1861 The infidels lend one another mutual help. Unless ye do the same, there will be discord in the land and great corruption

George Sale1734 And as to the infidels, let them be deemed of kin the one to the other. Unless ye do this, there will be a sedition in the earth, and grievous corruption

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 47:4, 8:70-71, 76:8-9, 8:67-68, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - bonds + fast; set + them + free + grace + ransom; captives; feed + captive; prisoners. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:85 - a charge against a specific community, though ransom of captives is described there as an obligation they acknowledged; 5:89 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about expiation for a broken oath?; 12:39 - Joseph in jail - imprisonment, not war.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".
