And you are of a great moral character.
How does the Qur'an describe the Prophet's character?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 68:4 AND LO! THOU ART OF A TREMENDOUS NATURE. NOTE THE RENDERINGS: Sale has a NOBLE DISPOSITION, Rodwell a NOBLE NATURE, Palmer a GRAND NATURE, Pickthall a TREMENDOUS NATURE, and Itani a GREAT MORAL CHARACTER - the only use of the word character in the five. Carried as the single most direct statement, with that fact recorded.
- 02 3:159 IT WAS BY THE MERCY OF ALLAH THAT THOU WAST LENIENT WITH THEM - FOR IF THOU HADST BEEN STERN AND FIERCE OF HEART THEY WOULD HAVE DISPERSED FROM ROUND ABOUT THEE. This is here because it describes the trait by its EFFECT on other people, and because it is stated as a counterfactual - what would have happened had he been otherwise.
- 03 9:128 There hath come unto you a messenger, ONE OF YOURSELVES, unto whom AUGHT THAT YE ARE OVERBURDENED IS GRIEVOUS, FULL OF CONCERN FOR YOU, for the believers full of pity and mercy. This is here because it describes him by what other people's difficulty does to him.
- 04 21:107 WE SENT THEE NOT SAVE AS A MERCY FOR THE PEOPLES. Carried as the widest statement - the description is not of his conduct toward his own community but of what he is for, universally.
- 05 33:21 VERILY IN THE MESSENGER OF ALLAH YE HAVE A GOOD EXAMPLE for him who looketh unto Allah and the Last Day, and remembereth Allah much. This is here because it turns the description into something to be copied, and states the condition under which it functions as one.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five verses, and what is striking is that four of the five describe him by his EFFECT on other people rather than by listing virtues.
68:4 is the exception and the most direct: you are of a tremendous nature. It is a statement about him in himself, and it is brief. One thing a reader should see here: four of our five translators do not use the word CHARACTER. Sale has "a noble disposition", Rodwell "a noble nature", Palmer "a grand nature", Pickthall "a tremendous nature"; Itani alone has "a great moral character" - the only use of the word at any verse in the five renderings.
3:159 works by counterfactual, which is unusual. It was by God's mercy that you were LENIENT with them - IF THOU HADST BEEN STERN AND FIERCE OF HEART THEY WOULD HAVE DISPERSED FROM ROUND ABOUT THEE. The gentleness is described by naming what harshness would have cost. And the verse goes on to tell him to pardon them, ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the matter - so the trait is immediately turned into instructions.
9:128 describes him by what other people's hardship does to him: a messenger FROM AMONG YOURSELVES, to whom your suffering is grievous, full of concern for you. He is characterised by being affected.
21:107 is the widest: We sent you only as A MERCY TO THE WORLDS. Not for a community, not for a period.
And 33:21 turns all of it toward the reader: in the messenger of God you have a GOOD EXAMPLE - and then adds a condition, for whoever looks to God and the Last Day and remembers God much. The verse does not say he is an example in the abstract; it says for whom.
The signed study on the Prophet Muhammad covers what the text says about his role and his status - the seal of the prophets, the mortal messenger, the one to be obeyed. This study takes only the character, and none of its five verses appears in that one.
What is not here is biography. What he was like day to day, how he spoke, how he treated particular people - that is the material of the sira and the , and this platform holds none of it. These five verses are what the Qur'an itself says, and most of what they say is about the difference he made to the people near him.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: no source has cleared the rights audit. It does not report how any commentator has read them: no has cleared it either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no cleared English edition exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading, because that layer is not built. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 68:4, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

It is by of grace from God that you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh, hardhearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the conduct of affairs. And when you make a decision, put your trust in God; God loves the trusting.

It was by the mercy of Allah that thou wast lenient with them (O Muhammad), for if thou hadst been stern and fierce of heart they would have dispersed from round about thee. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult with them upon the conduct of affairs. And when thou art resolved, then put thy trust in Allah. Lo! Allah loveth those who put their trust (in Him)
It was by a sort of mercy from God thou didst deal gently with them, for hadst thou been rough and rude of heart they had dispersed from around thee. But pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and take counsel with them in the affair. As for what thou hast resolved, rely upon God; verily, God loves those who do rely
Of the mercy of God thou hast spoken to them in gentle terms. Hadst thou been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from thee. Therefore, forgive and ask for pardon for them, and consult them in the affair of war, and when thou art resolved, then put thou thy trust in God, for God loveth those who trust in Him
And as to the mercy granted unto the disobedient from God, thou O Mohammed hast been mild towards them; but if thou hadst been severe, and hard-hearted, they had surely separated themselves from about thee. Therefore forgive them, and ask pardon for them: And consult them in the affair of war; and after thou hast deliberated, trust in God; for God loveth those who trust in Him

Being sparing of their help to you (believers). But when the fear cometh, then thou (Muhammad) seest them regarding thee with rolling eyes like one who fainteth unto death. Then, when the fear departeth, they scald you with sharp tongues in their greed for wealth (from the spoil). Such have not believed. Therefor Allah maketh their deeds fruitless. And that is easy for Allah
covetous towards you.' When fear comes thou wilt see them looking towards thee, their eyes rolling like one fainting with death; but when the fear has passed away they will assail you with sharp tongues, covetous of the best. These have never believed, and God will make vain their works, for that is easy with God
It is out of covetousness in your regard: for when an alarm cometh, thou mayest see them look to thee, and roll their eyes like him on whom the shadows of death have fallen! Yet, when the alarm is passed, with sharp tongues will they assail you, covetous of the best of the spoil. No faith have these! God will make their doings of no avail! And easy is this with God
being covetous towards you: But when fear cometh on them, thou seest them look unto thee for assistance, their eyes rolling about, like the eyes of him who fainteth by reason of the agonies of death: Yet when their fear is past, they inveigh against you with sharp tongues; being covetous of the best and most valuable part of the spoils. These believe not sincerely; wherefore God hath rendered their works of no avail; and this is easy with God

They assumed that the confederates had not withdrawn. But were the confederates to advance, they would wish they were in the desert with the Bedouins, inquiring about your news. And if they were among you, they would have done little fighting.
They hold that the clans have not retired (for good); and if the clans should advance (again), they would fain be in the desert with the wandering Arabs, asking for the news of you; and if they were among you, they would not give battle, save a little
They reckoned that the confederates would never go away; and if the confederates should come they would fain be in the desert with the Arabs, asking for news of you! and if they were amongst you they would fight but little
They thought that the CONFEDERATES would never retire; and were the confederates to come again, they would fain be dwelling among the Arabs of the desert, and there ask news about you! for though they were with you, they fought not except a little
They imagined that the confederates would not depart and raise the siege: And if the confederates should come another time, they would wish to live in the deserts among the Arabs who dwell in tents, and there to inquire after news concerning you; and although they were with you this time, yet they fought not, except a little

And when the believers saw the confederates, they said, "This is what God and His messenger have promised us; and God and His messenger have told the truth." And it only increased them in faith and submission.
And when the true believers saw the clans, they said: This is that which Allah and His messenger promised us. Allah and His messenger are true. It did but confirm them in their faith and resignation
And when the believers saw the confederates they said, 'This is what God and His Apostle promised us; God and His Apostle are true!' and it only increased them in faith and resignation
And when the faithful saw the confederates, they said, "This is what God and His Apostle promised us, and God and His Apostle spoke truly:" and it only increased their faith and self-devotion

The translators word this verse differently
Of the believers are men who are true to what they pledged to God. Some of them have fulfilled their vows; and some are still waiting, and never wavering.
Of the believers are men who are true to that which they covenanted with Allah. Some of them have paid their vow by death (in battle), and some of them still are waiting; and they have not altered in the least
Amongst the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with God, and there are some who have fulfilled their vow, and some who wait and have not changed with fickleness
Some were there among the faithful who made good what they had promised to God. Some have fulfilled their course, and others await its fulfilment, and have not been changelings who change
Of the true believers some men justly performed what they had promised unto God; and some of them have finished their course, and some of them wait the same advantage; and they changed not their promise, by deviating therefrom in the least
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 68:4, 3:159, 9:128, 21:107, 33:21, in full, and nothing else. No , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography was consulted, because none has cleared the rights audit. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted in choosing this study's verses. Where a sentence here counts or compares the renderings, it has been checked against all five.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set is the Editor's anchor frame, supplied by the board before the build, and NOT a search result. No probe was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every reference the board proposed was rendered from the real text before use and checked against the claim the frame made for it; a reference whose rendered text did not carry that claim was dropped, not forced.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. The derived divergence measure is printed per verse in the staging file and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
