Perhaps you may destroy yourself with grief, chasing after them, if they do not believe in this information.
What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's grief for those who wouldn't believe?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 18:6 YET IT MAY BE, IF THEY BELIEVE NOT IN THIS STATEMENT, THAT THOU WILT TORMENT THY SOUL WITH GRIEF OVER THEIR FOOTSTEPS. In because it is the sharpest of these verses - it anticipates him destroying himself over people who walk away, and the image is of him watching their tracks.
- 02 26:3 IT MAY BE THAT THOU TORMENTEST THYSELF because they believe not. In because it is the same concern in the shortest form, opening a surah.
- 03 35:8 So let not thy soul EXPIRE IN SIGHINGS FOR THEM. Lo, God is Aware of what they do. In because the remedy offered is not consolation but information - God knows - and because the four translators all reach for a word about breath and exhaustion.
- 04 16:127 Endure thou patiently. Thy endurance is only by the help of God. AND GRIEVE NOT FOR THEM, AND BE NOT IN DISTRESS BECAUSE OF THAT WHICH THEY DEVISE. In because it names two separate states - grief at their refusal, and anxiety at their plotting - and forbids both.
- 05 28:56 LO, THOU GUIDEST NOT WHOM THOU LOVEST, but God guideth whom He will. And He is best aware of those who walk aright. In because it is the most personal verse in the set - the word is LOVE - and because it removes the outcome from his hands entirely.
- 06 10:99 And if thy Lord willed, all who are in the earth would have believed together. WOULDST THOU COMPEL MEN UNTIL THEY ARE BELIEVERS? In because it answers the grief with a question, and the question makes the alternative to his failure look worse than the failure.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six verses, and their subject is a man who is taking rejection too hard.
18:6 is the most vivid: IT MAY BE THAT THOU WILT TORMENT THY SOUL WITH GRIEF OVER THEIR FOOTSTEPS - a picture of someone watching people walk away and grieving over the tracks they leave. 26:3 says the same thing in half a line at the opening of a surah. And 35:8 asks him not to LET HIS SOUL EXPIRE IN SIGHINGS for them; the word all four translators reach for is about breath running out.
That the text says this repeatedly is itself the finding. The Qur'an describes its own messenger as suffering over the refusal of his audience, and describes it in terms of physical exhaustion.
The answers given are not comfort. They are three removals of responsibility.
10:99 answers with a question: if God had willed, everyone on earth would have believed - WOULDST THOU COMPEL MEN UNTIL THEY ARE BELIEVERS? The alternative to his failure is coercion, and the question assumes he would not want it.
35:8 answers with information: God IS AWARE OF WHAT THEY DO. Not a promise of change - a statement that it is being seen.
28:56 is the one that carries the most weight, and it is personal in a way little else in the Qur'an is: LO, THOU GUIDEST NOT WHOM THOU LOVEST. The verse concedes the love and denies the power in one clause.
16:127 separates two states and forbids both - grieving over their refusal, and being distressed by their plotting - and grounds the endurance in help rather than in effort.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 18:6, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Yet it may be, if they believe not in this statement, that thou (Muhammad) wilt torment thy soul with grief over their footsteps
Haply thou wilt grieve thyself to death for sorrow after them, if they believe not in this new revelation
And haply, if they believe not in this new revelation, thou wilt slay thyself, on their very footsteps, out of vexation
Peradventure thou wilt kill thy self with grief after them, out of thy earnest zeal for their conversion, if they believe not in this new revelation of the Koran

Those who disbelieve will suffer a harsh punishment, but those who believe and do righteous deeds will have forgiveness and a great reward.

Whoever desires honor-all honor belongs to God. To Him ascends speech that is pure, and He elevates righteous conduct. As for those who plot evil, a terrible punishment awaits them, and the planning of these will fail.
Whoso desireth power (should know that) all power belongeth to Allah. Unto Him good words ascend, and the pious deed doth He exalt; but those who plot iniquities, theirs will be an awful doom; and the plotting of such (folk) will come to naught
Whosoever desires honour - honour belongs wholely to God; to Him good words ascend, and a righteous deed He takes up; and those who plot evil deeds, for them is keen torment, and their plotting is in vain
If any one desireth greatness, all greatness is in God. The good word riseth up to Him, and the righteous deed will He exalt. But a severe punishment awaiteth the plotters of evil things; and the plots of such will He render vain

Endure thou patiently (O Muhammad). Thine endurance is only by (the help of) Allah. Grieve not for them, and be not in distress because of that which they devise
Be thou patient then; but thy patience is only in God's hands. Do not grieve about them; and be not in a strait at their craftiness
Endure then with patience. But thy patient endurance must be sought in none but God. And be not grieved about the infidels, and be not troubled at their devices

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. If only there had been a community (of all those that were destroyed of old) that believed and profited by its belief as did the folk of Jonah! When they believed We drew off from them the torment of disgrace in the life of the world and gave them comfort for a while

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 18:6, 26:3, 35:8, 16:127, 28:56, 10:99, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - torment + thyself; consume + thyself; destroy + thyself + grieving; grieve + not + for + them; thou + canst + not + guide + whom + thou + lovest. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:62 - matched incidentally; it belongs to the salvation question; 2:262 - carried by open-vs-secret-giving.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
