Say, "I am only a human being like you, being inspired that your god is One God. Whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him work righteousness, and never associate anyone with the service of his Lord."
What does the Qur'an mean that the Prophet is 'only a man'?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 18:110 SAY: I AM ONLY A MORTAL LIKE YOU. My Lord inspireth in me that your God is only One God. And whoever hopeth for the meeting with his Lord, let him do righteous work, and make none sharer of the worship due unto his Lord. In because it is the Prophet instructed to say it of himself, and because the ONLY difference the verse then names is that he receives inspiration.
- 02 41:6 Say: I am only a mortal like you. It is inspired in me that your God is One God, therefore take the straight path unto Him. In because it repeats 18:110's formula almost exactly, which makes it a settled self-description rather than a single remark.
- 03 25:20 WE NEVER SENT BEFORE THEE ANY MESSENGERS BUT LO, THEY VERILY ATE FOOD AND WALKED IN THE MARKETS. In because it makes the point about all prophets and does so with two deliberately unremarkable activities.
- 04 23:33–34 This is only a mortal like you, who eateth of that whereof ye eat and drinketh of that ye drink. IF YE WERE TO OBEY A MORTAL LIKE YOURSELVES, THEN LO, YE SURELY WOULD BE LOSERS. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the OBJECTORS saying it - the humanity of the messenger is their argument against him - which is the context the phrase actually belongs to.
- 05 21:3 The wrong-doers confer in secret: IS THIS OTHER THAN A MORTAL LIKE YOU? Will ye then succumb to magic when ye see (it)? In because it is the same objection in a different surah, and it pairs the humanity charge with the magic charge.
- 06 11:27 The chieftains of his folk who disbelieved said: WE SEE THEE BUT A MORTAL LIKE US, and we see not that any follow thee save the most abject among us. In because it is Noah receiving the identical objection, which shows it as the standing complaint against every messenger.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The phrase belongs to two speakers in the Qur'an, and a reader should be shown both.
It is first of all an OBJECTION. At 11:27 Noah's chiefs say WE SEE THEE BUT A MORTAL LIKE US. At 23:33 and 21:3 the same charge is brought against later messengers - this is only a mortal like you, who eats what you eat and drinks what you drink. And 23:34 draws the conclusion the objectors intend: IF YE OBEY A MORTAL LIKE YOURSELVES, YE WOULD SURELY BE LOSERS. In the mouths of opponents, the humanity of the messenger is the reason not to listen.
And then the Prophet is instructed to say it himself. 18:110 and 41:6: SAY, I AM ONLY A MORTAL LIKE YOU. The objection is conceded rather than rebutted.
What the two verses add is the single distinction they allow: IT IS INSPIRED IN ME. Nothing else. Not power, not knowledge, not a different nature. The verse then turns immediately to what the reader should do about it - do righteous work, take the straight path, associate none with your Lord.
25:20 generalises it in the most deflating terms available: no messenger was ever sent before you but THEY ATE FOOD AND WALKED IN THE MARKETS. Two activities chosen for being entirely ordinary.
This bears on a good deal. It is the same position What could and couldn't the Prophet do - miracles, the unseen? finds from the other direction, and the study What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet Muhammad? found that the four verses naming him are mostly about constraint. A reader wanting to know what the Qur'an claims for its own messenger will find the claim narrower than the devotional literature built on it - and that literature is , which has not cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 18:110, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

As for those who believe and do righteous deeds-for them is a reward uninterrupted.
Lo! as for those who believe and do good works, for them is a reward enduring
Verily, those who believe and do right, for them is a hire that is not grudged
But they who believe and do the things that are right shall receive a perfect recompense
But as to those who believe, and work righteousness; they shall receive an everlasting reward

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 18:110, 41:6, 25:20, 23:33-34, 21:3, 11:27, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - i + am + only + mortal + like + you; only + a + man + like + you; messengers + ate + food + walked + markets; mortal + like + yourselves. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 23:24 - near-identical to 23:33; 57:20 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about wealth and children as the adornment of this life?
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
