O people! Worship your Lord who created you and those before you, that you may attain piety.
What does the Qur'an say the purpose of life is?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:21 Worship your Lord who created you and those before you. In because it is the set's plainest statement of what people are addressed and asked to do.
- 02 6:130 Messengers came, and at the end they testify against themselves that the life of the world beguiled them. In because it is the set's clearest statement that the question was put to people and answered by them.
- 03 7:11 We created you, then fashioned you, then told the angels to prostrate before Adam. In because it is the one verse in the set that states an order of making.
- 04 7:51 Those who took their religion for a sport and a pastime, and whom the life of the world beguiled. In because it names a purpose refused rather than a purpose given.
- 05 51:56 The verse most often given as the answer to this question, and the one this study's own selection rule dropped: it matched in three renderings of four, Sale rendering serve where Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall have worship. It is here on the Editor's instruction. In because it is the only verse in the set that states a purpose for creating in a single clause.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
These verses give an address, an order of making, a purpose stated outright, and two refusals.
The purpose is stated in 51:56: I have not created jinn and men but that they should worship me - Sale alone renders it serve. It is the only verse in the set that puts a purpose in a single clause. 2:21 gives the same thing as an address: worship your Lord, who created you and those before you. 7:11 states an order of making - created, then fashioned, then the angels told to prostrate.
The other two say what the purpose is not. 7:51 names those who took their religion for a sport and a pastime and whom the life of the world beguiled. 6:130 has messengers come and warn, and at the end the hearers testify against themselves that the life of the world beguiled them. In both, the failure is described as being taken in by the nearer thing.
One thing a reader should know about how this study was built. 51:56 was excluded by the selection rule used to build this study - it matched in three renderings of four, because of one translator's word - and it was added back deliberately. The rule would have shipped this study without its central verse, and that is recorded here rather than quietly corrected.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:21, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Mi smo vas stvorili i onda vam oblik dali, a poslije melekima rekli: "Sedždu Ademu učinite!"
Mi wooɗndii min tagii on, refti min mbaadini on, refti min mbi'ani maleykaaji ɗiin : "cujjanee Aadama", ɓe cujji, si wonaa Ibliisa, o jeyanooka e sujjuɓe ɓen.
E vi abbiamo creati, poi modellati; poi abbiamo detto agli angeli: “Prosternatevi ad Ǣdem ( آدَم )!”
11. Ir tikrai, Mes sukūrėme jus (jūsų tėvą Adamą (Adomą) ir tada suteikėme jums formą (gražią žmogaus formą), tada Mes tarėme angelams: „Nusilenkite Adamui (Adomui).“ ir jie nusilenkė, išskyrus Iblisą (Šėtoną) – jis atsisakė būti iš tų, kurie nusilenkia.
Dhugumatti, isin uumneerra, Ergasiis isin bocne, Ergasiis maleykotaan "Aadamiif sujuudaa" jenne, Achumaan sujuudani; Ibliis malee, Inni warra sujuudan irraa hin taane. [2]
Na hakika tuliwaumba, kisha tukawatia sura, kisha tukawaambia Malaika, "Msujudieni Adam." Basi wakasujudu isipokuwa Iblisi, hakuwa miongoni mwa waliosujudu.

Are they waiting for anything but its fulfillment? The Day its fulfillment comes true, those who disregarded it before will say, "The messengers of our Lord did come with the truth. Have we any intercessors to intercede for us? Or, could we be sent back, to behave differently from the way we behaved before?" They ruined their souls, and what they used to invent has failed them.
Await they aught save the fulfilment thereof? On the day when the fulfilment thereof cometh, those who were before forgetful thereof will say: The messengers of our Lord did bring the Truth! Have we any intercessors, that they may intercede for us? Or can we be returned (to life on earth), that we may act otherwise than we used to act? They have lost their souls, and that which they devised hath failed them
Do they wait now for aught but its interpretation?- on the day when its interpretation shall come, those who forgot it before will say, There did come to us the apostles of our Lord in truth, have we intercessors to intercede for us? or, could we return, we would do otherwise than we did.' They have lost themselves, and that which they devised has strayed away from them
What have they to wait for now but its interpretation? When its interpretation shall come, they who aforetime were oblivious of it shall say, "The Prophets of our Lord did indeed bring the truth; shall we have any intercessor to intercede for us? or could we not be sent back? Then would we act otherwise than we have acted." But they have ruined themselves; and the deities of their own devising have fled from them
Do they wait for any other than the interpretation thereof? On the day whereon the interpretation thereof shall come, they who had forgotten the same before, shall say, now are we convinced by demonstration that the messengers of our Lord came unto us with truth: Shall we therefore have any intercessors, who will intercede for us? Or shall we be sent back into the world, that we may do other works than what we did in our life-time? But now have they lost their souls; and that which they impiously imagined, hath fled from them

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four translations that had cleared when this study was written - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:21, 6:130, 7:11, 7:51, 51:56, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
The basis this restatement was written over. This study was signed on 5 September 2026, when four English renderings had cleared. Itani 2012 cleared on 7 September 2026, and five have cleared since. The verse selection, the reading and every finding here are the work done over those four; the divergence figures below are the live measure, computed over all five. Nothing here has been re-read against Itani, and no finding claims his agreement.
How this set was arrived at. Candidates came from a conjunctive word search over the four renderings then cleared, returned in mushaf order with no relevance ordering, and verses matched in all four of those were carried forward. Verses that matched the search on wording alone were proposed for removal and confirmed out: 6:112 - Matched on jinn + men. It is about adversaries appointed to every prophet.; 7:38 - Matched on jinn + men. It is nations cursing one another as they enter the Fire. One correction to how this set was built is recorded on its face. 51:56, the verse most often given as the answer to this question, matched in three renderings of four - Sale renders serve where the others render worship - and the all-four selection rule dropped it. It was added back on the Editor's instruction. The rule would otherwise have shipped this study without its central verse. Why each verse is in the study is stated per verse in the selection, and is signed with this prose. THE PROBE TERMS WERE NOT RECORDED AT THE TIME AND CANNOT BE REPRODUCED, so that search has not been re-run over five and this restatement does not claim it was. The verse set is therefore exactly the set signed on 5 September 2026, unchanged: no verse was added and none was dropped.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. The derived divergence measure is computed over all five cleared renderings, Itani included, and is restated here so that this page and every verse page report the same measure. Across this set it runs from band 1 at 7:51 (0.49), where the five stand closest, to band 4 at 51:56 (0.65), where they stand furthest apart. The version signed when four translations were cleared gave band 1 at 7:51 (0.42) and band 3 at 51:56 (0.59); the two endpoint verses are unchanged, the figures are not. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
