Is Iblis (Satan) an angel or a jinn in the Qur'an?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 18:50 And when We said unto the angels: fall prostrate before Adam, and they fell prostrate, all save Iblis. HE WAS OF THE JINN, so he rebelled against his Lord's command. In because it is the ONE verse that states his kind outright, and it does so in the middle of a sentence about the angels. ALSO CARRIED by the signed batch-3 study jinn, with a different reason there.
  2. 02 2:34 And when We said unto the angels: prostrate yourselves before Adam - they fell prostrate ALL SAVE IBLIS. He demurred through pride and so became a disbeliever. In because it is the standard form of the scene, and the grammar of 'all save Iblis' is exactly what makes the question live.
  3. 03 7:11–12 And We told the angels: fall ye prostrate before Adam. And they fell prostrate, all save Iblis. He said: I am better than him; Thou createdst me of fire while him Thou didst create of mud. In as ONE PASSAGE because his own account of his origin - FIRE - is the second piece of evidence about his kind, and it is his own testimony.
  4. 04 38:74–76 Saving Iblis; he was scornful and became one of the disbelievers. He said: O Iblis, what hindereth thee from falling prostrate before that which I have created with both My hands? Art thou too proud, or art thou of the high exalted? He said: I am better than him; Thou createdst me of fire, whilst him Thou didst create of clay. In as ONE PASSAGE because the question put to him and his answer are one exchange, and because 'art thou of the high exalted' is the text raising his rank as a possibility.
  5. 05 15:31–33 Save Iblis; he refused to be among the prostrate. He said: O Iblis, what aileth thee that thou art not among the prostrate? He said: I am not one to prostrate myself unto a mortal whom Thou hast created out of potter's clay of black mud altered. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the third telling of the same refusal, and the repetition across surahs is the shape of the evidence.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

One verse answers the question and the rest of the text makes the answer awkward. Both facts belong in the study.

18:50 says it outright: HE WAS OF THE JINN. All four translators carry it, and it is the only statement of his kind anywhere in the Qur'an.

What makes it awkward is where it sits. In every telling of the scene - 2:34, 7:11, 15:31, 17:61, 20:116, 38:74 - the command is given TO THE ANGELS, and the exception is phrased ALL SAVE IBLIS. Read naturally in English, that grammar puts him inside the group being addressed. The text repeats the construction six times and only once steps outside it to say he was of the jinn.

His own testimony supplies the second piece of evidence and points the same way as 18:50. Twice - 7:12 and 38:76 - he says: THOU CREATEDST ME OF FIRE, and him of clay. The jinn are elsewhere associated with fire; the angels are not described this way.

38:75 adds a line worth noticing, because it is God putting the question: art thou too proud, OR ART THOU OF THE HIGH EXALTED? The text itself raises his rank as an open question rather than assuming it.

So: the Qur'an says once that he was of the jinn, gives an origin in fire that fits that, and otherwise narrates him as the exception within a command to angels. Whether he was an angel who fell, a jinn present among them, or something the categories do not cleanly fit is a question the tradition argued at length - and settling it needs the commentators, none of whom has cleared the rights audit.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 18:50, widening across 5 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 18:50, 2:34, 7:11-12, 38:74-76, 15:31-33, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - iblis + jinn; eblis + genii; was + jinn; iblis; eblis. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 7 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 17:61 - near-identical to 15:31-33 and 38:74-76, both kept; carried by What does the Qur'an say about the human being made from clay? for its clay clause; 20:116 - near-identical and adds nothing new; 26:95 - his followers, not his kind; 34:14 - matched on jinn; the subject is the jinn's ignorance; 34:20 - his success, not his kind; 41:25 - comrades in general; 46:29 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about the jinn?

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
