And that the human being attains only what he strives for.
Do Qur'an khwani / khatam gatherings for the dead earn them reward?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 53:39 Itani has "the human being attains only what he strives for", Pickthall has "man hath only that for which he maketh effort", and Sale has "nothing shall be imputed to a man for righteousness, except his own labour".
- 02 35:18 Itani has "No burdened soul can carry the burden of another", and later "He who purifies himself purifies himself for his own good". The verse speaks of burdens; Pickthall adds in his own brackets "(he cannot by his merit redeem others)", words the other four do not print.
- 03 59:10 Those who came after are given a prayer for those before them: Itani has "Our Lord, forgive us, and our brethren who preceded us in faith". The verse prints a prayer said for others; it does not say whether those others had died.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
None of the five renders a verse that speaks of reciting the Qur'an for the dead, or of gatherings held to complete a recitation for them. The text does not name the practice.
What the five print is nearby. At 53:39 Itani has "the human being attains only what he strives for", and Sale has "nothing shall be imputed to a man for righteousness, except his own labour". At 35:18 Itani has "No burdened soul can carry the burden of another". That verse speaks of burdens, not of reward. The words "(he cannot by his merit redeem others)" are Pickthall's own, in brackets, and the other four do not print them.
The text also prints a prayer offered for others. At 59:10 those who came after say, in Itani's words, "Our Lord, forgive us, and our brethren who preceded us in faith". So the verses here hold both: a person attains what they strove for, and a prayer for those who went before is set down in the text.
Whether the reward of reciting reaches the dead is not printed in these verses. That question, and every account of such gatherings, belongs to and jurisprudence, a layer this platform does not hold or show. This study does not weigh any position on it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 53:39, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

No burdened soul can carry the burden of another. Even if one weighted down calls for help with its burden, nothing can be lifted from it, even if they were related. And the burdened soul shall not bear the burden of another: and if the heavy laden soul cry out for its burden to be carried, yet shall not aught of it be carried, even by the near of kin! Thou shalt warn those who fear their Lord in secret, and observe prayer. And whoever shall keep himself pure, he purifieth himself to his own behoof: for unto God shall be the final gathering
A burdened soul shall not bear the burden of another: And if a heavy-burdened soul call on another to bear part of its burden, no part thereof shall be born by the person who shall be called on, although he be ever so nearly related. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

To the poor refugees who were driven out of their homes and their possessions, as they sought the favor of God and His approval, and came to the aid of God and His Messenger. These are the sincere.
And (it is) for the poor fugitives who have been driven out from their homes and their belongings, who seek bounty from Allah and help Allah and His messenger. They are the loyal
And (it is) for the poor who fled, who were driven forth from their houses and their wealth, who crave grace from God and His goodwill, and help God and the Apostle; they are the truthful
To the poor refugees (Mohadjerin) also doth a part belong, who have been driven from their homes and their substance, and who seek favour from God and his goodwill, and aid God and his apostle. These are the men of genuine virtue
A part also belongeth to the poor Mohajerin, who have been dispossessed of their houses and their substance, seeking favour from God, and his good will, and assisting God and his apostle. These are the men of veracity

And those who, before them, had settled in the homeland, and had accepted faith. They love those who emigrated to them, and find no hesitation in their hearts in helping them. They give them priority over themselves, even if they themselves are needy. Whoever is protected from his natural greed-it is they who are the successful.
Those who entered the city and the faith before them love those who flee unto them for refuge, and find in their breasts no need for that which hath been given them, but prefer (the fugitives) above themselves though poverty become their lot. And whoso is saved from his own avarice - such are they who are successful
And those who were settled in the abode and the faith before them, love those who fled to them; and they do not find in their breasts a need of what has been given to them; preferring them to themselves, even though there be poverty amongst them; and whoso is preserved from his own covetousness, these are the prosperous
They of Medina who had been in possession of their abodes and embraced the faith before them, cherish those who take refuge with them; and they find not in their breasts any desire for what hath fallen to their share: they prefer them before themselves, though poverty be their own lot. And with such as are preserved from their own covetousness shall it be well
And they who quietly possessed the town of Medina, and professed the faith without molestation, before them, love him who hath fled unto them, and find in their breasts no want of that which is given the Mohajerin, but prefer them before themselves, although there be indigence among them. And whoso is preserved from the covetousness of his own soul, those shall surely prosper

Have you not considered those who act hypocritically? They say to their brethren who disbelieved among the People of the Book, "If you are evicted, we will leave with you, and will not obey anyone against you; and should anyone fight you, we will certainly support you." But God bears witness that they are liars.
Hast thou not observed those who are hypocrites, (how) they tell their brethren who disbelieve among the People of the Scripture: If ye are driven out, we surely will go out with you, and we will never obey anyone against you, and if ye are attacked we verily will help you. And Allah beareth witness that they verily are liars
Dost thou not look on those who were hypocritical, saying to their brethren who misbelieved amongst the people of the Book, 'If ye be driven forth we will go forth with you; and we will never obey any one concerning you; and if ye be fought against we will help you.' But God bears witness that they are surely liars
Hast thou not observed the disaffected saying to their unbelieving brethren among the people of the Book, "If ye be driven forth, we will go forth with you; and in what concerneth you, never will we obey any one; and if ye be attacked we will certainly come to your help." But God is witness that they are liars
Hast thou not observed them who play the hypocrites? They say unto their brethren who believe not, of those who have received the scriptures, verily if ye be expelled your habitations, we will surely go forth with you; and we will not pay obedience, in your respect, unto any one for ever: And if ye be attacked, we will certainly assist you. But God is witness that they are liars

If they are evicted, they will not leave with them; and if anyone fights them, they will not support them; and if they go to their aid, they will turn their backs and flee; then they will receive no support.
(For) indeed if they are driven out they go not out with them, and indeed if they are attacked they help them not, and indeed if they had helped them they would have turned and fled, and then they would not have been victorious
If they be driven forth, these will not go forth with them; and if they be fought against, these will not help them; or if they do help them, they will turn their backs in flight;- then shall they not be helped
No! if they were driven forth, they would not share their banishment; if they were attacked they would not help them, or if they help them they will surely turn their backs: then would they remain unhelped
Verily if they be expelled they will not go forth with them; and if they be attacked, they will not assist them; and if they do assist them, they will surely turn their backs: And they shall not be protected
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The words khwani and khatam are printed in none of the five; the probe 'khatam|khwani' returns 0 rows. The anchors are the two verses most often put to the question: on what a person attains (53:39), and on burdens that cannot be carried for another (35:18). 59:10 was added because it prints a prayer said for others who went before; without it the set would show only one side. This study does not say whether the reward of reciting reaches the dead, and does not describe any gathering. Those questions are answered in and jurisprudence, a layer this platform does not hold or show.
