And the sky, He raised; and He set up the balance.
What does the Qur'an say about balance in nature (mizan) - and about disturbing it?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 55:7–9 And the sky He hath uplifted, and He hath set the measure - that ye exceed not the measure - but observe the measure strictly, nor fall short thereof. In as ONE PASSAGE, and it is the core of the merged study: the same word carries a cosmic act in 55:7 and a human obligation in 55:8-9, in three consecutive lines, and splitting them destroys the move the passage makes.
- 02 42:17 God it is Who hath revealed the Scripture with truth, and the Balance. In because it puts the Balance beside the Scripture as a thing revealed, which is what makes it more than a metaphor for fair trade.
- 03 57:25 We sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance, that mankind may observe right measure; and He revealed iron, wherein is mighty power and uses for mankind. In because it repeats the Scripture-and-Balance pairing and states its purpose, and because it puts iron in the same sentence. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about iron being 'sent down'?, with a different reason there.
- 04 30:41 Corruption doth appear on land and sea because of what men's hands have done, that He may make them taste a part of what they have done, in order that they may return. In because it is the disturbance half of the merged question: damage across land and sea, attributed to human action. DECLARED DUAL-PLACEMENT from What does the Qur'an say about corruption appearing 'on land and sea'?, where the reason is different.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
This study is a MERGE. Balance in nature and disturbing the balance are taken here as one question, and 55:7-9 shows why.
Three consecutive lines do the whole thing. He raised the sky, AND HE SET THE MEASURE - that you exceed not the measure - but observe the measure strictly and do not fall short. The same word carries a cosmic act and then a human instruction, without a break and without explanation. Whatever was set when the sky was raised is the thing the reader is told not to transgress.
42:17 and 57:25 both place the Balance beside the Scripture as something REVEALED - sent with messengers, for the stated purpose that people may observe right measure. That pairing is what keeps the word from collapsing into a metaphor for honest trading. It is put in the same category as a book.
57:25 then does something a modern reader notices: the same sentence that reveals the Scripture and the Balance goes on to iron, wherein is mighty power and uses for mankind. Scripture, measure, and the metal - in one verse.
30:41, carried here as a declared dual-placement, is the disturbance side: corruption has appeared on land and sea BY WHAT MEN'S HANDS HAVE DONE. The verse assigns the damage to human action and gives a purpose - that they may taste part of it, and return.
Four verses about full measure and true weight in TRADE were dropped. They use the same vocabulary and they are a real part of the text, but they belong to the separate question of honest measure, taken up by the study What does the Qur'an say about honesty in weight and measure?, and folding them in here would make an environmental reading look better attested than it is.
What the text does not supply is any content for the measure. It does not say what the balance consists of, what quantity is being kept, or what specifically counts as exceeding it. A reader wanting an ecological doctrine will find the vocabulary here and not the specifics.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 55:7–9, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And as to those who dispute about God, after pledges of obedience given to Him, their disputings shall be condemned by their Lord, and wrath shall be on them, and theirs shall be a sore torment
As to those who dispute concerning God, after obedience hath been paid Him by receiving his religion, their disputing shall be vain in the sight of their Lord; and wrath shall fall on them, and they shall suffer a grievous punishment

Those who do not believe in it seek to hasten it; but those who believe are apprehensive of it, and they know it to be the truth. Absolutely, those who question the Hour are in distant error.
Those who believe not therein seek to hasten it, while those who believe are fearful of it and know that it is the Truth. Are not they who dispute, in doubt concerning the Hour, far astray
Those who believe not would hurry it on; and those who believe shrink with terror at it and know that it is true. Ay, verily, those who dispute concerning the Hour are in remote error
They who believe not in it, challenge its speedy coming: but they who believe are afraid because of it, and know it to be a truth. Are not they who dispute of the Hour, in a vast error
They who believe not therein, wish it to be hastened by way of mockery: But they who believe dread the same, and know it to be the truth. Are not those who dispute concerning the last hour in a wide error

Vi sände våra sändebud med klara bevis, och med dem sände vi ned skrifterna och måttstocken så att människorna skulle upprätta rättvisa. Vi gav dem dessutom järnet, i vilket finns enorm styrka och stor nytta för mänskligheten. Detta för att Gud ska göra det känt vem som, utan att kunna se honom, väljer att stödja honom och hans sändebud. Gud är förvisso stark och mäktig.

The usury you practice, seeking thereby to multiply people's wealth, will not multiply with God. But what you give in charity, desiring God's approval-these are the multipliers.
That which ye give in usury in order that it may increase on (other) people's property hath no increase with Allah; but that which ye give in charity, seeking Allah's Countenance, hath increase manifold
And what ye put out to usury that it may increase with the wealth of men, it shall not increase with God; but what ye put out in alms, desiring the face of God - these it is who shall gain double
Whatever ye put out at usury to increase it with the substance of others shall have no increase from God: but whatever ye shall give in alms, as seeking the face of God, shall be doubled to you
Whatever ye shall give in usury, to be an increase of men's substance, shall not be increased by the blessing of God: But whatever ye shall give in alms, for God's sake, they shall receive a twofold reward

God is He who created you, then provides for you, then makes you die, then brings you back to life. Can any of your idols do any of that? Glorified is He, and Exalted above what they associate.
Allah is He Who created you and then sustained you, then causeth you to die, then giveth life to you again. Is there any of your (so-called) partners (of Allah) that doeth aught of that? Praised and Exalted be He above what they associate (with Him)
It is God who created you and then provided for you; and then will make you die, and then will quicken you again; is there any of your partners who can do aught of that? Celebrated be His praises, and exalted be He above what they associate with Him
It is God who created you - then fed you - then will cause you to die - then will make you alive. Is there any of your companion-gods who can do aught of these things? Praise be to Him! and far be He exalted above the gods they join with Him
It is God who hath created you, and hath provided food for you: Hereafter will He cause you to die; and after that will He raise you again to life. Is there any of your false gods, who is able to do the least of these things? Praise be unto Him; and far be He removed from what they associate with Him

So devote yourself to the upright religion, before there comes from God a Day that cannot be averted. On that Day, they will be shocked.
So set thy purpose resolutely for the right religion, before the inevitable day cometh from Allah. On that day mankind will be sundered
Set thy face steadfast to the standard religion, before there come a day from God which there is no averting; on that day shall they be parted into two bands
Set thy face then towards the right faith, ere the day come which none can hinder God from bringing on. On that day shall they be parted in twain
Set thy face therefore towards the right religion, before the day cometh, which none can put back from God. On that day shall they be separated into two companies

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 55:7-9, 42:17, 57:25, 30:41, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - balance; exceed + balance; defraud + balance; scales + justice; weight + justice. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 4 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 6:152; 11:85; 17:35; 26:182. The reason for each was not recorded.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
