They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.
What does the Qur'an say about angels - and do they have free will?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 16:50 They fear their Lord above them, and DO WHAT THEY ARE BIDDEN. In because it is the direct answer to the second half of the question, and because it attributes fear to them in the same breath as obedience.
- 02 66:6 Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire whereof the fuel is men and stones, over which are set angels STERN AND STRONG, WHO RESIST NOT GOD IN THAT WHICH HE COMMANDETH THEM but do that which they are commanded. In because it states the same thing twice in one clause - they do not disobey, and they do what they are told - which is the most explicit statement in the text.
- 03 35:1 Praise be to God, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who appointeth the angels MESSENGERS HAVING WINGS TWO, THREE AND FOUR. He multiplieth in creation what He will. In because it is the only physical description of them, and because the numbers are indefinite and the verse immediately says He adds what He wills.
- 04 2:30 And when thy Lord said unto the angels: I am about to place a viceroy in the earth - THEY SAID: WILT THOU PLACE THEREIN ONE WHO WILL DO HARM THEREIN AND SHED BLOOD, while we hymn Thy praise? He said: surely I know that which ye know not. In because it is the one place angels QUESTION a decision, which sits awkwardly beside 16:50 and 66:6 and is the reason the question is worth asking at all. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about humans as stewards (khalifa) and the trust of the earth?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Four verses, and they do not quite agree - which is why the second half of the question is a real question.
16:50 and 66:6 give the standard answer. They FEAR THEIR LORD ABOVE THEM and DO WHAT THEY ARE BIDDEN. The angels over the Fire RESIST NOT GOD IN WHAT HE COMMANDS THEM but do what they are commanded - the same thing said twice in one clause, which is as emphatic as the text gets.
35:1 is the only physical description: messengers with WINGS TWO, THREE AND FOUR. Note that the list is open at the top and the verse immediately adds that God multiplies in creation what He wills. It is not a taxonomy.
Then 2:30, which is why this study is not simply a report of obedience. God announces a viceroy on the earth and the angels ANSWER BACK: will You place there one who will corrupt it and shed blood, while we praise You? That is a question, and it contains an objection. The reply - I know what you do not know - does not withdraw the plan and does not rebuke them, and the objection is left standing in the text.
So the honest position is: the Qur'an twice says angels do not disobey, and once shows them querying a decision before it is carried out. Whether questioning is disobedience, whether 2:30 describes something other than free choice, and how the two sit together, the text does not say.
Seventeen verses were dropped, nearly all of them matched on the phrase DO WHAT THEY ARE COMMANDED in contexts having nothing to do with angels. That probe over-returned badly on the first pass and was tightened; the drops are recorded so the tightening is visible.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 16:50, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Whatever mercy God unfolds for the people, none can withhold it. And if He withholds it, none can release it thereafter. He is the Exalted in Power, Full of Wisdom.
That which Allah openeth unto mankind of mercy none can withhold it; and that which He withholdeth none can release thereafter. He is the Mighty, the Wise
What God opens to men of His mercy there is none to withhold; and what He withholds, there is none can send it forth after Him; for He is the mighty, the wise
The mercy which God layeth open for man, no one can keep back; and what He shall keep back, none can afterwards send forth. And He is the Mighty, the Wise

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 16:50, 66:6, 35:1, 2:30, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - angels + messengers + wings; fear + their + lord + above; do + what + they + are + bidden; angels + stern + strong; obey + not + god + commandeth. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 17 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:68 - matched incidentally; 2:93 - the covenant at the Mount; 4:60 - matched incidentally; 4:77 - matched incidentally; 6:152 - left out of What does the Qur'an say about balance in nature (mizan) - and about disturbing it?, and honest measure is taken up elsewhere; 7:28 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about following forefathers blindly?; 8:12 - angels in battle, but the verse's subject is the instruction to the believers; 11:112 - addressed to the Prophet; 12:40 - carried by What does the Qur'an teach about God's oneness (tawhid)?; 13:25 - covenant-breaking; 13:36 - matched incidentally; carried by What is the unforgivable sin (shirk) in the Qur'an?; 29:8 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the treatment of parents?; 37:102 - Abraham's dream; 39:20 - a description of the Garden; 42:15 - addressed to the Prophet; 46:15 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about the treatment of parents?; 2:27 - covenant-breaking.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
