By the daybreak.
What does Surah al-Fajr say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 89:1 By the Dawn. This is here because it is the first of the four oaths the surah opens with: "By the day-break" in Sale, "By the DAYBREAK" in Rodwell, "By the dawn" in Palmer and "By the daybreak" in Itani.
- 02 89:2 And ten nights. This is here because it swears by a stretch of nights without saying which: "and ten nights" in Rodwell and Palmer, and "And ten nights" in Pickthall.
- 03 89:3 And the Even and the Odd. This is here because the renderings pair the two in opposite order and with different words: "by that which is double, and that which is single" in Sale and "By that which is double and that which is single" in Rodwell, against "And the single and the double" in Palmer and "And the Even and the Odd" in Pickthall.
- 04 89:4 And the night when it departeth. This is here because the renderings do not agree whether the night is arriving or leaving: "and by the night when it cometh on" in Sale, against "By the night when it pursues its course" in Rodwell, "And the night when it departeth" in Pickthall and "And the night as it recedes" in Itani.
- 05 89:5 There surely is an oath for thinking man. This is here because it asks whether the oaths are enough, and Pickthall alone makes it a statement rather than a question: "Is there not in this an oath formed with understanding" in Sale, "Is there not in this an oath becoming a man of sense" in Rodwell and "Is there in that an oath for a man of sense" in Palmer, against "There surely is an oath for thinking man" in Pickthall.
- 06 89:6 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad. This is here because it turns the surah to the first of three peoples: "Hast thou not considered how thy Lord dealt with Ad" in Sale, "Hast thou not seen how thy Lord dealt with Ad" in Rodwell and "Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad" in Pickthall, with his own brackets. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the peoples of 'Ad and Thamud?, with a different reason there.
- 07 89:7 With many-columned Iram. This is here because the renderings name the place and what stood there differently: "the people of Irem, adorned with lofty buildings" in Sale, "At Irem adorned with pillars" in Rodwell, "with Iram of the columns" in Palmer, "With many-columned Iram" in Pickthall and "Erum of the pillars" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the peoples of 'Ad and Thamud?, with a different reason there.
- 08 89:8 The like of which was not created in the lands. This is here because it says nothing like it was ever made again: "the like whereof hath not been erected in the land" in Sale, "Whose like have not been reared in these lands" in Rodwell, "the like of which has not been created in the land" in Palmer and "The like of which was not created in the lands" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the peoples of 'Ad and Thamud?, with a different reason there.
- 09 89:9 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley. This is here because it names the second people by what they cut, and Sale alone says what they cut it into: "and with Thamud, who hewed the rocks in the valley into houses" in Sale, against "And with Themoud who hewed out the rocks in the valley" in Rodwell, "And Thamud when they hewed the stones in the valley" in Palmer and "And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the peoples of 'Ad and Thamud?, with a different reason there.
- 10 89:10 And with Pharaoh, firm of might. This is here because the renderings do not agree on what the stakes were: "and with Pharaoh, the contriver of the stakes" in Sale, "And with Pharaoh the impaler" in Rodwell, "And Pharaoh of the stakes" in Palmer and "And Pharaoh of the Stakes" in Itani, against "And with Pharaoh, firm of might" in Pickthall, which does not read them as stakes at all. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the peoples of 'Ad and Thamud?, with a different reason there.
- 11 89:11 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands. This is here because it states what all three had in common: "Who had behaved insolently in the earth" in Sale, "Who all committed excesses in the lands" in Rodwell, "Who were outrageous in the land" in Palmer and "Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands" in Pickthall, with his own brackets. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the peoples of 'Ad and Thamud?, with a different reason there.
- 12 89:12 And multiplied iniquity therein. This is here because it adds what they spread, and the renderings name it differently: "and multiplied corruption therein" in Sale, "And multiplied wickedness therein" in Rodwell, "and did multiply wickedness therein" in Palmer and "And multiplied iniquity therein" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the peoples of 'Ad and Thamud?, with a different reason there.
- 13 89:13 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. This is here because it says what followed, and Sale alone makes it more than one kind: "Wherefore thy Lord poured on them various kinds of chastisement" in Sale, against "Wherefore thy Lord let loose on them the scourge of chastisement" in Rodwell, "and thy Lord poured out upon them the scourge of torment" in Palmer and "Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the peoples of 'Ad and Thamud?, with a different reason there.
- 14 89:14 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. This is here because Sale alone says what is watched from the tower, and Pickthall drops the tower altogether: "For thy Lord is surely in a watch-tower, whence He observeth the actions of men" in Sale, against "For thy Lord standeth on a watch tower" in Rodwell and "Verily, thy Lord is on a watch tower" in Palmer, and against "thy Lord is ever watchful" in Pickthall and "Your Lord is on the lookout" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the peoples of 'Ad and Thamud?, with a different reason there.
- 15 89:15 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. This is here because it is the first half of the man's mistake, read as prosperity in Sale and as honouring itself in Pickthall: "Moreover man, when his Lord trieth him by prosperity, and honoureth him, and is bounteous unto him, saith, my Lord honoureth me" in Sale, against "As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about wealth as a test?, with a different reason there.
- 16 89:16 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. This is here because it is the other half, and the renderings differ over what is withheld: "But when He proveth him by afflictions, and withholdeth his provisions from him, he saith, my Lord despiseth me" in Sale, "but whenever he tries him and doles out to him his subsistence, then he says, My Lord despises me" in Palmer and "But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about wealth as a test?, with a different reason there.
- 17 89:17 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan. This is here because it answers that reading of fortune by naming what is not done: "By no means: But ye honour not the orphan" in Sale, "But ye honour not the orphan" in Rodwell, "Nay, but ye do not honour the orphan" in Palmer, "Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan" in Pickthall and "But you do not honor the orphan" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about greed and the love of wealth? and What does the Qur'an say about wealth as a test?, with different reasons there.
- 18 89:18 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. This is here because the failure is urging others, not only feeding: "neither do ye excite one another to feed the poor" in Sale, "Nor urge ye one another to feed the poor" in Rodwell and "nor do ye urge each other to feed the poor" in Palmer, against "And urge not on the feeding of the poor" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about greed and the love of wealth? and What does the Qur'an say about hospitality and generosity?, with different reasons there.
- 19 89:19 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. This is here because Sale and Palmer alone say whose inheritance is eaten: "and ye devour the inheritance of the weak, with undistinguishing greediness" in Sale and "and ye devour the inheritance (of the weak) with a general devouring" in Palmer, with his own brackets, against "And ye devour heritages, devouring greedily" in Rodwell and "And ye devour heritages with devouring greed" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about greed and the love of wealth?, with a different reason there.
- 20 89:20 And love wealth with abounding love. This is here because it names the love of wealth itself as the last of the failures: "and ye love riches, with much affection" in Sale, "And ye love riches with exceeding love" in Rodwell, "and ye love wealth with a complete love" in Palmer and "And love wealth with abounding love" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about greed and the love of wealth?, with a different reason there.
- 21 89:21 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding. This is here because it opens the day that settles it, and the renderings repeat the grinding to different degrees: "When the earth shall be minutely ground to dust" in Sale and "Nay, when the earth is crushed to pieces" in Palmer, against "But when the earth shall be crushed with crushing, crushing" in Rodwell and "Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding" in Pickthall.
- 22 89:22 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank. This is here because it says who comes and in what order: "and thy Lord shall come, and the angels rank by rank" in Sale, "And thy Lord shall come and the angels rank on rank" in Rodwell, "and thy Lord comes with the angels, rank on rank" in Palmer and "And your Lord comes, with the angels, row after row" in Itani.
- 23 89:23 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him). This is here because remembering arrives too late to help, and Sale alone says what is remembered: "On that day shall man call to remembrance his evil deeds; but how shall remembrance avail him" in Sale, against "but how shall he have a reminder" in Palmer and "on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)" in Pickthall, with his own brackets.
- 24 89:24 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life. This is here because the man speaks for himself, and the renderings differ over what he wishes he had done: "He shall say, would to God that I had heretofore done good works in my life-time" in Sale, "would that I had prepared for this my life" in Rodwell and "He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life" in Pickthall, with his own brackets.
- 25 89:25 None punisheth as He will punish on that day. This is here because Rodwell alone names who is punishing: "On that day none shall punish as God punisheth" in Rodwell, against "On that day none shall punish with his punishment" in Sale, "But on that day no one shall be tormented with a torment like his" in Palmer and "None punisheth as He will punish on that day" in Pickthall.
- 26 89:26 None bindeth as He then will bind. This is here because it repeats that shape for binding rather than punishing: "nor shall any bind with his bonds" in Sale, "And none shall bind with such bonds as He" in Rodwell, "and none shall be bound with bonds like his" in Palmer and "None bindeth as He then will bind" in Pickthall.
- 27 89:27 But ah! thou soul at peace. This is here because the surah turns from that day to address a soul directly, and the renderings name its state differently: "O thou soul which art at rest" in Sale and "thou soul which art at rest" in Rodwell, against "O thou comforted soul" in Palmer, "thou soul at peace" in Pickthall and "O tranquil soul" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What is the 'soul that blames itself' in the Qur'an?, with a different reason there.
- 28 89:28 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure. This is here because Sale alone names both what the soul is pleased with and whom it pleases: "return unto thy Lord, well pleased with thy reward, and well pleasing unto God" in Sale, against "Return to thy Lord, pleased, and pleasing him" in Rodwell, "return unto thy Lord, well pleased and well pleased with" in Palmer, "Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure" in Pickthall and "Return to your Lord, pleased and accepted" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What is the 'soul that blames itself' in the Qur'an?, with a different reason there.
- 29 89:29 Enter thou among My bondmen. This is here because the soul is told to enter company before place: "Enter among my servants" in Sale, "And enter amongst my servants" in Palmer, "Enter thou among My bondmen" in Pickthall and "Enter among My servants" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What is the 'soul that blames itself' in the Qur'an?, with a different reason there.
- 30 89:30 Enter thou My Garden. This is here because it closes the surah on the place itself, named as a garden in Pickthall: "and enter my paradise" in Sale, "and enter my Paradise" in Palmer and "Enter My Paradise" in Itani, against "Enter thou My Garden" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What is the 'soul that blames itself' in the Qur'an?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Fajr is thirty verses long. It opens with four short oaths, names three peoples who were destroyed, turns on a man who reads his own fortune as a verdict, lists what such a man fails to do, and closes by calling a soul home.
The oaths run at 89:1-4 and the renderings keep them short: "By the day-break" in Sale, "By the DAYBREAK" in Rodwell and "By the dawn" in Palmer, then "and ten nights" in Rodwell and Palmer alike. 89:3 is the one they read differently in shape - "by that which is double, and that which is single" in Sale, against "And the single and the double" in Palmer and "And the Even and the Odd" in Pickthall - and the night at 89:4 either comes on or goes: "and by the night when it cometh on" in Sale against "And the night when it departeth" in Pickthall and "And the night as it recedes" in Itani. 89:5 asks whether that is oath enough: "Is there not in this an oath formed with understanding" in Sale.
89:6-14 name three peoples. Ad is asked about first, with a place: "the people of Irem, adorned with lofty buildings" in Sale, "At Irem adorned with pillars" in Rodwell, "with Iram of the columns" in Palmer, "With many-columned Iram" in Pickthall and "Erum of the pillars" in Itani - the like of which, in all of them, was never built again. Thamud follows in "and with Thamud, who hewed the rocks in the valley into houses" in Sale, which alone says what the rocks were cut into, and then Pharaoh, whom the renderings describe in ways that do not agree at all: "and with Pharaoh, the contriver of the stakes" in Sale, "And with Pharaoh the impaler" in Rodwell and "And Pharaoh of the stakes" in Palmer, against "And with Pharaoh, firm of might" in Pickthall. What they had in common is stated at 89:11-12 and what followed at 89:13, and 89:14 says the Lord is watching: "Verily, thy Lord is on a watch tower" in Palmer, where Sale alone says what is watched, in "For thy Lord is surely in a watch-tower, whence He observeth the actions of men", and Pickthall drops the tower entirely for "thy Lord is ever watchful". The study What does the Qur'an say about the peoples of 'Ad and Thamud? carries 89:6-14 with its own reason.
89:15-16 put the two halves of a man's mistake side by side. Given plenty he says one thing - "Moreover man, when his Lord trieth him by prosperity, and honoureth him, and is bounteous unto him, saith, my Lord honoureth me" in Sale - and given little he says the other: "But when He proveth him by afflictions, and withholdeth his provisions from him, he saith, my Lord despiseth me" in Sale. The study What does the Qur'an say about wealth as a test? carries 89:15-17 with its own reason.
89:17-20 answer that by naming what is actually not done. The orphan is not honoured - "By no means: But ye honour not the orphan" in Sale - the poor are not fed, the inheritance is eaten, and wealth is loved. Sale and Palmer alone say whose inheritance: "and ye devour the inheritance of the weak, with undistinguishing greediness" in Sale and "and ye devour the inheritance (of the weak) with a general devouring" in Palmer, in his own brackets, where Rodwell has only "And ye devour heritages, devouring greedily". The studies What does the Qur'an say about greed and the love of wealth? and What does the Qur'an say about hospitality and generosity? carry parts of this stretch, each with its own reason.
89:21-26 describe the day that settles it, beginning with the earth ground down - "Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding" in Pickthall - and "and thy Lord shall come, and the angels rank by rank" in Sale. Remembering comes too late at 89:23, and the man speaks: "He shall say, would to God that I had heretofore done good works in my life-time" in Sale. Then 89:25-26 say that nothing compares to that punishment, and Rodwell alone names who is doing it: "On that day none shall punish as God punisheth".
The surah closes at 89:27-30 by addressing a soul directly, and the renderings name its state differently: "O thou soul which art at rest" in Sale, "O thou comforted soul" in Palmer, "thou soul at peace" in Pickthall and "O tranquil soul" in Itani. It is told to return - "return unto thy Lord, well pleased with thy reward, and well pleasing unto God" in Sale - and then to enter twice over: "Enter among my servants" in Sale and "and enter my paradise" in Sale, where Pickthall has "Enter thou among My bondmen" and "Enter thou My Garden". The study What is the 'soul that blames itself' in the Qur'an? carries 89:27-30 with its own reason.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say what the ten nights are, what Iram was or where it stood, or what the stakes attached to Pharaoh were - the renderings divide on that last one, between an instrument and a description of strength. Answering any of them needs a commentary, a history or a lexicon read against the Arabic: this study holds no in an edition whose usage rights can be verified - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. It holds no , occasion of revelation or biography either. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 89:1, widening across 30 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 30 passages, each with every cleared translation

89:30 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 89:1-30, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all thirty verses of Surah al-Fajr, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
