O you who believe! Do not consume each other's wealth illicitly, but trade by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves, for God is Merciful towards you.

Does the Qur'an mention taking one's own life?
In short
- The text says: do not consume one another's wealth wrongfully, and do not kill yourselves, which Rodwell renders commit not suicide and Pickthall renders kill not one another, for God is merciful to you (4:29); do not throw yourselves with your own hands into ruin (2:195); those who have wronged themselves are not to despair of God's mercy, for He forgives all sins (39:53); and none despairs of God's comfort or mercy but the disbelieving (12:87).
- The text does not say: anything on it beyond 4:29; the other verses speak of ruin and of despair.
- The rest comes from: this study names no source outside the Qur'an.
Where the renderings split
4:29, Itani: "And do not kill yourselves"
4:29, Pickthall: "kill not one another"
4:29, Palmer: "And do not kill yourselves"
4:29, Rodwell: "commit not suicide"
4:29, Sale: "neither slay your selves"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:29 Do not kill yourselves: the one verse where four renderings speak of a person's own life, and Pickthall of one another
- 02 4:30 The verse that follows, on whoever does that through aggression and injustice
- 03 2:195 Do not throw yourselves with your own hands into ruin
- 04 39:53 Those who have wronged themselves are not to despair of God's mercy
- 05 12:87 None despairs of God's comfort or mercy but the disbelieving
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
One verse speaks of it. At 4:29 Itani has "And do not kill yourselves, for God is Merciful towards you". Rodwell has "commit not suicide", and Sale "neither slay your selves". Pickthall reads the same words another way: "kill not one another". The verse ends, in all five, on God being merciful or compassionate toward those addressed.
The verse that follows, 4:30, speaks of whoever does that through aggression and injustice. The five do not say whether that points to the wealth, to the killing, or to both.
Three other verses are read here beside it. At 2:195, in a verse about spending in God's cause, Rodwell has "throw not yourselves with your own hands into ruin". At 39:53 Itani has "do not despair of God's mercy, for God forgives all sins". At 12:87 Pickthall has "despair not of the Spirit of Allah".
That is what the text says about it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:29, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And carry out the Hajj and the Umrah for God. But if you are prevented, then whatever is feasible of offerings. And do not shave your heads until the offering has reached its destination. Whoever of you is sick, or has an injury of the head, then redemption of fasting, or charity, or worship. When you are secure: whoever continues the Umrah until the Hajj, then whatever is feasible of offering. But if he lacks the means, then fasting for three days during the Hajj and seven when you have returned, making ten in all. This is for he whose household is not present at the Sacred Mosque. And remain conscious of God, and know that God is stern in retribution.
Perform the pilgrimage and the visit (to Makka) for Allah. And if ye are prevented, then send such gifts as can be obtained with ease, and shave not your heads until the gifts have reached their destination. And whoever among you is sick or hath an ailment of the head must pay a ransom of fasting or almsgiving or offering. And if ye are in safety, then whosoever contenteth himself with the visit for the pilgrimage (shall give) such gifts as can be had with ease. And whosoever cannot find (such gifts), then a fast of three days while on the pilgrimage, and of seven when ye have returned; that is, ten in all. That is for him whoso folk are not present at the Inviolable Place of Worship. Observe your duty to Allah, and know that Allah is severe in punishment
And fulfil the pilgrimage and the visitation to God; but if ye be besieged, then what is easiest for you by way of gift. But shave not your heads until your gift shall reach its destination; and he amongst you who is sick or has a hurt upon his head, then the redemption is by fasting or by alms or by an offering. But when ye are safe again, then let him who would enjoy the visitation until the pilgrimage (bring) what is easiest as a gift. And he who cannot find (anything to bring), then let him fast three days on the pilgrimage and seven when ye return; these make ten days complete. That is, for him whose family are not present in the Sacred Mosque; and fear God and know that God is keen to punish
Accomplish the Pilgrimage and the Visitation of the holy places in honour of God: and if ye be hemmed in by foes, send whatever offering shall be the easiest: and shave not your heads until the offering reach the place of sacrifice. But whoever among you is sick, or hath an ailment of the head, must satisfy by fasting, or alms, or an offering. And when ye are safe from foes, he who contents himself with the Visitation of the holy places, until the Pilgrimage, shall bring whatever offering shall be the easiest. But he who findeth nothing to offer, shall fast three days in the Pilgrimage itself, and seven days when ye return: they shall be ten days in all. This is binding on him whose family shall not be present at the sacred Mosque. And fear God, and know that God is terrible in punishing
Perform the pilgrimage of Mecca, and the visitation of God: And if ye be besieged, send that offering which shall be the easiest; and shave not your heads, until your offering reacheth the place of sacrifice. But whoever among you is sick, or is troubled with any distemper of the head, must redeem the shaving his head by fasting, or alms, or some offering. When ye are secure from enemies, he who tarrieth in the visitation of the temple of Mecca until the pilgrimage, shall bring that offering which shall be the easiest. But he who findeth not any thing to offer, shall fast three days in the pilgrimage, and seven when ye are returned: They shall be ten days complete. This is incumbent on him, whose family shall not be present at the holy temple. And fear God and know that God is severe in punishing

And take provisions, but the best provision is righteousness. And be mindful of Me, O people of understanding.
The pilgrimage is (in) the well-known months, and whoever is minded to perform the pilgrimage therein (let him remember that) there is (to be) no lewdness nor abuse nor angry conversation on the pilgrimage. And whatsoever good ye do Allah knoweth it. So make provision for yourselves (Hereafter); for the best provision is to ward off evil. Therefore keep your duty unto Me, O men of understanding

The evils of their deeds caught up with them. And the wrongdoers among these will also be afflicted by the evils of what they earned, and they cannot prevent it.
But the evils that they earned smote them; and such of these as do wrong, the evils that they earn will smite them; they cannot escape
and there befell them the evil deeds of what they had earned: and those who do wrong of these (Meccans), there shall befall them too the evil deeds of what they had earned, nor shall they frustrate Him
And their own ill deeds recoiled upon them. And whoso among these (Meccans) shall do wrong, on them likewise their own misdeeds shall light, neither shall they invalidate God
and the evils which they had deserved, fell upon them. And whoever of these Meccans shall have acted unjustly, on them likewise shall fall the evils which they shall have deserved; neither shall they frustrate the divine vengeance

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it2 of the 2 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The question asks whether the Qur'an mentions taking one's own life. The probe 'suicide|kill (yourselves|your selves|one another)|slay your selves' returns 9 rows at three verses. At 4:29 four renderings speak of killing oneself. At 4:66 four renderings have kill yourselves in a command God says He did not give, and at 2:54 the words are said to Moses' people after the calf, where Palmer has kill each other and Rodwell has slay the guilty among you; 4:66 and 2:54 are recorded as not carried. At 5:3 Sale's words are about game a hunter kills, and 5:3 is recorded as not carried.
The wealth clause of 4:29 is read in the study What does the Qur'an say about consuming others' wealth unjustly?, and despair in What does the Qur'an say about not despairing of God's mercy? This study names no source outside the Qur'an.
